The academic council does not encourage the use of independent study courses, but if such courses are offered it should be for one of the following reasons. (Check applicable box.) To allow a student to complete her/his program on schedule and avoid requiring a student to return to campus for only one or two courses in her/his last semester. There are no other alternatives such as course substitutions or waivers.

Each independent study course must: require an equal or greater amount of work than that required in a regularly scheduled class. have a syllabus and course outline attached hereto which states 1) the course requirements 2) expected progress and specific dates for the progress 3) a list of all required reading and written work and 4) the basis for grade determination.

C.

Each faculty member is limited to two independent studies students during any given semester.

PART III: STUDENT CONTRACT I, _______________________________ (the student) recognize that this course is offered to me as an accommodation by the instructor who will not receive any reimbursement or commendation for having taken her/his time to work with me. For that reason, I will contract to do the following: A. Keep all appointments. B. Turn in all assigned work on time as outlined in the attached syllabus. C. Instructor's option: Failure to comply with any of the above may result in cancellation of my contract (accompanied by a grade of AW or F at the instructor’s discretion).
