THE PRETTIEST GIRL OF ALL TIME (BALLAD FOR JOELLE VAN DYNE) (2012) – Jeremy Podgursky stereo fixed-media Joelle Van Dyne was the prettiest girl of all time (P.G.O.A.T.) in David Foster Wallace’s epic tome Infinite Jest. Her mother assaulted her by throwing acid on her face, and she chose to wear a veil and join the U.H.I.D. (Union of the Hideously and Improbably Deformed). She was the eerie radio personality known as Madame Psychosis and was a muse, lover, and inspiration to all of the men in the Incandenza family. As the Mad Stork’s collaborator, her role in his film Infinite Jest supposedly left viewers in a state of permanent catatonic bliss. My piece consists of a series of reveries, daydreams, and veiled scenes of processed and un-processed acoustic guitar (played by yours truly) that gently fade in and out of each other. It was recorded and sequenced in ProTools, and the guitars were processed using spectral delays and granulation in Max/MSP. The affect is soothing, gentle, and maybe a little ominous: how else could I pay tribute to such a complex Joelle? The P.G.O.A.T. (Ballad for JVD) is part of an ongoing series (Brief Interviews with Hideous Guitars) inspired by characters and events in Infinite Jest (R.I.P. DFW – you are sorely missed). www.jeremypodgursky.com
