Summer 2016

June 6 – August 15 (no class July 4) Mon & Wed 6—9PM Room: 312 Fee: $1034 plus $35 application fee (books included in tuition cost)

Program Information: This comprehensive, 60-hour course will prepare students for an entry-level position in a community, hospital or long-term care setting. It is also an excellent review for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) national certification exam. Instruction is provided by pharmacists from the Connecticut Pharmacy Association. Topics will include medical terminology specific to the pharmacy; reading and interpreting prescriptions; defining drugs by generic and brand names; dosage calculation; I.V. flow rate; drug compounding; dose conversion; dispensing of prescriptions; inventory control; billing, and insurance reimbursement. The course fee does not include the PTCB exam fee. Anyone convicted of a felony is not permitted to sit for the exam. Course prerequisite: fluency in basic math and algebra.

Nature of Work: Pharmacy Technicians perform routine tasks to help prepare prescribed medications, such as counting tablets and labeling bottles. They also perform administrative duties, such as answering phones, stocking shelves, and operating cash registers. Most technicians’ workdays are spent on their feet. They may be required to lift heavy boxes or to use stepladders to retrieve supplies from high shelves. Technicians work the same hours as pharmacists, which may include evenings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Technicians refer any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. Pharmacy Technicians can work in retail or mail-order pharmacies, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted-living facilities.

Program Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED, and complete the following:  Fill out the enclosed Pharmacy Technician application, questionnaire, and math questions.  Mail or bring the application and forms along with a non-refundable $35 application fee (credit or debit card, check or money order payable to TCC -- no cash please), to: Continuing Education Tunxis Community College 271 Scott Swamp Road Farmington, CT 06032

Please call the Continuing Education Office for more information: 860.773.1450.
