‘Alleluia’ by Eric Whitactre The Sidney Sussex Arts Festival on Saturday 25th June will feature a world premiere of a new choral work by the celebrated American composer Eric Whitacre. The new piece, ‘Alleluia’, will be performed by The Choir of Sidney Sussex College whom Eric heard extensively during his residency at Sidney Sussex as the college’s composer in the Michaelmas Term of 2010. We are pleased to release a few words written by Eric about his latest choral work: I'm not an atheist, but I'm not a Christian either, and for my entire career I have resisted setting texts that could be used in a liturgical context. After spending the Michaelmas term at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, though, singing with Dr. David Skinner and his marvellous Chapel Choir, I began to see the deep wisdom in the liturgical service. I found myself suddenly open to the history and the beauty of the poetry, and it was the single word ‘Alleluia’, 'praise God', that most enchanted me. It seemed the perfect fit for the music of ‘October’ (a symphonic wind work I wrote in the year 2000) which to me is a simple and humble meditation on the glory of Autumn, and so I have adapted and evolved the piece into an a cappella work for Sidney Sussex College Choir – ‘Alleluia’.
