Position Description: ABORIGINAL EDUCATION WORKER As a member of the team that supports the classroom teacher you will enable students to experience success within the classroom and community. Supporting the Principal in providing for the needs of aboriginal students, the Aboriginal Education Worker (AEW) will: 1.

Empathise, support and be a point of contact for Aboriginal students and parents of Xavier High School (the School) Encourage and increase an awareness of Aboriginal culture within and external to the School. This could include opportunities such as NAIDOC Week, Assemblies and events held within the Community Liaise with the Principal, Assistant Principal, House Coordinators and Learning Support Coordinator in relation to Pastoral Care of Aboriginal students With the support and direction of the Learning Support Co-ordinator, investigate appropriate assistance for Aboriginal students in their learning needs Assist with the transition of Aboriginal students from primary to secondary school Develop a knowledge of the local Aboriginal community by liaising with parents of Aboriginal students and encouraging their involvement in school programs Adopt a team based approach to school activities, subject selection, careers, tertiary opportunities in liaison with the Learning Support Co-ordinator Establish and maintain links with local Aboriginal agencies including: i. Aboriginal Education Consultative Group ii. Aboriginal Interagency Networks Monitor records of attendance / absences of Aboriginal students and follow up absences with parents immediately where evidence indicates a concern Assist with teacher and support staff professional learning in aspects of Aboriginal education by sourcing appropriate resources, professional reading and learning opportunities Assist in completing relevant statistical returns, funding applications and evaluation reports on Indigenous issues Assist staff with incorporating an Aboriginal perspective into the sacramental and liturgical life of the school.

It should be noted that this job description is not exhaustive and the Principal may discuss and vary the responsibilities of the Aboriginal Education Worker as required. To perform this role it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under Section 14d of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Page 1 of 2

Have a demonstrated understanding of issues affecting Aboriginal people and their Education 3. Have a demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively with and to effectively engage with Aboriginal people and communities 4. Personal dedication to the schools Vision and Mission 5. Ability to work well within a team environment 6. Aboriginal identified position 7. Have experience using a computer, in particular Google software packages 8. Show a demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as work positively and cooperatively within a team environment as well as within tight time schedules and in accordance with variable workload demands Desirable:  A current driver’s license  Certificate level qualification in education support or community studies.
