Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF) is an internationally acclaimed festival that celebrates literature and the work of writers. Asia TOPA: Asia-Pacific Triennial of Performing Arts is a major public program of arts and culture from the Asia Pacific region, initiated by Arts Centre Melbourne, to be presented in Melbourne in early 2017. MWF will present an event within the Asia TOPA, ensuring that literature is profiled and celebrated during this major cross-sector initiative. MWF will develop and present an Indian writers festival in Australia. This is a rare opportunity for a knowledgeable programmer and project manager, with a keen interest and knowledge in Indian literature and culture, to develop and deliver this event. Each year, the Festival celebrates the art, talent and ideas of hundreds of writers from Australia and around the world, through innovative literary programming that includes storytelling, performance, discussion and debate, walks, events for school groups, music and art events. Growing the next generation of readers is something MWF takes great pride in. Our Schools’ Program is Australia’s biggest literary festival for students. Position Purpose The Program Producer will use their knowledge of Indian literature, their cultural awareness, and their commitment to cultural and linguistic diversity in the arts, to develop and deliver an Indian literature festival in Melbourne in a way that is authentic and appropriate, and resonates with diverse local audiences. Working with the MWF Festival Director and with a major project partner in India, the Program Producer’s responsibilities will include curating events, inviting and programming writers, overseeing program development and administration, delivering exceptional artist care, and working with a production team to ensure the event is delivered effectively and professionally. The Program Producer will have particular responsibility for programming Australian authors to appear alongside international visitors.

Key responsibilities Programming and program administration In line with the overall creative direction of MWF’s Asia TOPA contribution, and under the direction of the Festival Director:  Collaborate with MWF’s programming partner in India (who will have primary responsibility for programming Indian authors for the event)  Identify and invite with Australia-based authors for the event  Identify, invite and correspond with event chairs / moderators  Develop themes and topics, and develop event formats  Lead artist care and communications, including contractual engagement of confirmed authors  Liaise with stakeholders to ensure the effective delivery of partnered programming within the festival  Manage and maintain accurate artist and event information in the festival database  Create and coordinate documents to assist the smooth delivery of the festival program Program production  Provide artist care and artist liaison duties, including arranging air travel (primarily domestic interstate), ground transfers, and accommodation for visiting guests  Resolve program and production needs in the lead up to and during the festival, connecting artists, publishers and MWF’s production team to ensure the smooth delivery of all festival events  Assist with the timely delivery of event copy and other information to MWF’s marketing functions The post-holder will be required to assist with wrap-up functions, including delivering a short wrap-up report by the end of February 2017. Key selection criteria     

A creative thinker with a passion for literature and literary programming A keen interest in, or knowledge of, Indian literature and culture Experience in curating and delivering public programs or events Advanced attention to detail and record management skills, and proven ability to meet deadlines Ability to work under general instruction, and to work independently
