Internet LAUNCHING THE INTERNET To access the Internet you need to use a Web Browser. A web browser is a software program that allows you to view web pages. Common web browsers that you would find on public computers are Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Safari, and Google Chrome.

CONNECTING TO INTERNET In order to launch the internet one needs internet connection, to get connection you’ll need an internet service provider and necessary equipment. Common internet service providers are Comcast, USI Wireless and CenturyLink (formally Qwest)

The menus provide access to such 0 functions as opening files, printing, zoom, increasing/decreasing text size, interacting with an application, or saving a webpage. 2 New Tab - To open a new tab that allows you to visit multiple websites in the same window. 3 Address Bar - The box at the top of the browser window that shows the URL – or internet location of the current web page you are on. It is also used to type in the address of a website you wish to visit (For example: http://www.ppl-inc.org). 4 Back and Forward –Use the Back button to return to the web pages you have already viewed. Each time you click it, the button takes you back one more web page. After using the Back button, click the Forward button to go forward again. 5 Refresh - Reloads the page you are currently viewing. 6 Stop - Stops a page from loading. This is useful if a page is taking a long time to load. 7 Help – Get help using the browser with tutorials and simple tips. 8 Home - Returns to the Homepage, which is the webpage the browser goes to when first opened. All PPL computers homepages are set to the PPL website. 9 Print – To print the page you are on, simply click on the print icon and you will be able to print. 9 10 Search Bar - To search the Internet for information, type a key word, phrase, or subject here. This search engine will then search the Internet for documents that contain those key words.
REVIEW: LINK CURSOR/HYPERLINKS If you move your pointer over some words in a browser this might turn your pointer into a little hand. This indicates that once those words are left clicked on once you will be taken to a new webpage. Hyperlinks are words that have been linked to a new page. In a browser you can easily tell when words have been hyperlinked because they are a different color and underlined. This work was created by PPL. SEARCH ENGINES To search the Internet for information, you must use a special kind of website called a Search Engine. A search engine searches the Internet for documents that contain a key word, phrase, or subject. The user specifies the key word by typing it into the Search box. Some common search engines are www.google.com, www.yahoo.com and www.bing.com. Google
Search box Using a search engine, after typing in a key word or phrase, a list of websites called Search Results appear. If the words you put in do not find the right website or information, you can try again by adding or erasing words in the search box, then clicking Search again.
TIPS FOR EFFECTIVE SEARCHING Keep it simple!!! As a general rule, when searching, just type whatever comes to mind about your search query, hit enter, and the search engine will search for relevant content.
Every word matters (All words used in a search query will be used) Search is always case insensitive, and punctuation is ignored Google will usually correct spelling for you by asking “Did you mean…” Use descriptive words, but use as few as possible If you are looking for a particular place, concept, or product, start with its name, or as much of the name as you can recall

MAPPING & DIRECTIONS The Internet can be a helpful resource for finding directions, maps, and bus schedules. Two great tools to use are Google Maps and the Metro Transit website. Google Maps
After typing in a location and clicking Search Maps, a map will generate and show you where that location is on a map. If the location entered does not generate a map, you can try again by adding or erasing words in the search bar, or looking at the suggested menu, then clicking Search Maps again.

Metro Transit Similar to Google Maps Directions, Metrotransit.org allows for one to schedule a trip according to the metro transit bus schedule. Simply enter the place you’re leaving from in the “From” box and where you’re going to in the “To”. Select “Depart by” or “Arrive by” and change the date and time according to when you plan to ride the bus. Once all the information is typed and selected click on “Plan My Trip”. INTERNET AND EMAIL USAGE AND SAFETY ISSUES AND GUIDELINES Malware: Malicious Software that is designed to damage or disrupt a computer without the user’s knowledge. Examples include Virus, Worm and Trojan Horse. Pop-ups: Online advertisements that pop-up on the screen when you’re searching the internet. Spyware: Small, usually undetected programs that “spy” on you by collecting information you transmit online (such as your address, e-mail password, websites you look at, etc.)
Avoid downloading music, programs, movies, etc. from illegitimate sites.
If a pop-up ad appears, simply close it by clicking the ‘X’ in the upper right hand corner.
Only open emails and download attachments from people and companies you recognize.
Do not provide personal or financial information unless you’re on a secured (https://) website.
WHEN POP-UP WINDOW IS BLOCKED Sometimes in order to have a pop-up window appear you need to select options and click on “allow pop-ups for (address of website)” and you’ll be able to view the window.
Anti-virus software: software that protects your computer from the harm of computer viruses. Ex: McAfee, AVG, Norton, and Microsoft Essentials Security words: this helps a website be aware that you are a human that isn’t making multiple accounts for spam
FAMILY SAFETY To make the internet a safer place for children, Microsoft has enabled ways to enforce safety policies. To learn more about these safety policies and how you can enable them to fit your family you just have to click on the Start Button Control Panel click on User Accounts & Family Safety. DOMAIN EXTENSION DEFINITIONS A domain is a .something that appears at the end of a web address. Some of the most common domain names are: .COM (Commercial) - Generally intended for commercial use. By far the most recognized domain name extension. .NET (Network) - This was originally intended for network oriented sites such as internet service providers. People will register .NET domains for commercial use, generally if the .COM extension isn't available. .ORG (Organization) - This domain extension was originally intended for non-profit or trade organizations. .GOV (government) – This domain is for government websites. .EDU (education) – This domain is for schools and colleges.
