Emergency radiology involves examinations for patients of all ages who are acutely ill or injured. The nature of emergency radiology requires practitioners to make prompt and timely decisions about the type of imaging modality to use and then provide quick interpretations of the examinations for an appropriate and timely management. An area of emergency radiology that does not receive enough focus is the special circumstances surrounding examinations that are given after normal business hours—5:00 PM and beyond. This issue of Radiologic Clinics of North America takes a closer look at that aspect of emergency radiology.

A multimodality approach focuses on the three types of cross-sectional imaging most often used in the emergency room: ultrasound, CT, and MR imaging. Relevant topics have been included that will provide up-to-date information for general practitioners as well as radiology residents in an academic setting. We wish to thank Barton Dudlick and our outstanding contributors for their amazing work and their cooperation. It was a privilege to be guest editors for the 2004 Emergency Radiology issue (Vol. 42, Issue 2) and an honor to have the opportunity to delve deeper into the topic with this issue.
