CITY OF SAN BRUNO POLICE DEPARTMENT

PRESS RELEASE Friday, August 03, 2018 SUBJECT:

Fentanyl Cases

CASE NUMBER:

Various

DATE OCCURRED:

August 2, 2018

TIME OCCURRED:

9:25 p.m.

CONTACT PERSON:

Lieutenant Ryan Johansen

On Thursday, August 2, 2018 at 9:25 p.m., San Bruno Police Officers contacted a subject who admitted to using and possessing fentanyl. Approximately an hour later, San Bruno Police Officers responded to a call for service regarding a suicidal subject who was also in possession of fentanyl. The San Bruno Police Department has encountered numerous subjects in possession of fentanyl over the last few months. Fentanyl and fentanyl-related compounds are synthetic opioids. It only takes a very small amount of fentanyl or its derivatives - which can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin or mucus membranes (such as being inhaled through the nose or mouth) - to result in severe adverse reactions, and even death. As a consequence, not only are users exposed to danger, but so are others who encounter them, including the general public, first responders, and law enforcement. In recent years these drugs have become more widely available in the United States and grown as a threat to public safety. You can access more information about these drugs on the DEA website at: https://www.dea.gov/druginfo/fentanyl.shtml. In an effort to better protect the public, as well as first responders, the San Bruno Police Department is in the process of equipping all of its Officers with Naloxone, and training them in its proper use. Naloxone is a medication designed to rapidly reverse opioid overdose. It can very quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing with heroin or prescription opioid pain medications, such as fentanyl.
