Prince2 methodology in use at largest infrastructure project in Holland The largest infrastructure project in the Netherlands, a mammoth construction project (15 kilometres long) to upgrade and enlarge the port of Rotterdam, was bound to raise howls of protest from citizens, just like large projects anywhere are bound to do. The people protested that no one had made clear to them the costs of the project, its possible impact on the environment and other unaddressed concerns. But the howls quietened down when Expecto Project, an APMG accredited training and consulting organisation stepped in to streamline, and bring to order its operations for an efficient and timely conclusion. “When we moved in on to work on the (MV2) project, we found everything in a terrible mess,” says Richard Moret, a Prince2 consultant with Expecto. This was during the BEST PRACTICE showcase conference at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London. For one thing there was too much confusion on the project. People would spend hours discussing plans only to see them scuttled the following morning. The Dutch Parliament was questioned repeatedly by the citizens and it in turn consistently pressured the contractors and other partners on the project for answers. Expecto quickly introduced the Prince2 methodology, allocating duties according to ability to deliver, using its maturity model of levels to gauge such ability. The consultants then quickly worked out the total cost of the project at around 2.9 billion Euros a sum they presented to the parliament (together with a time frame for completion of the project), and the parliament was very happy to be in a position to provide some answers to the public. “Using Prince2 management we have managed to turn around the project quickly and work is much more efficient and timely,” Mr Moret said. Hans Smit, Chief Executive Officer of the Port of Rotterdam was on hand to speak on the merits of adopting a Prince2 methodology at the conference.
