Programme of Events October - December 2015
What is the European Capital of Culture?
Each year since 1985, the European Union designates one or more cities as a European Capital of Culture. Chosen cities and their regions are expected to present an innovative year-long cultural programme that highlights the richness and diversity of cultures in Europe. In the year 2020, Ireland and Croatia have been designated as host countries for this prestigious title.
Why Compete?
The benefits of being awarded the European Capital of Culture are economic and social as well as cultural. Galway's bid is being jointly led by Galway City Council and Galway County Council. Galway is competing against Dublin, Limerick and a coalition of Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford to become the European Capital of Culture in the year 2020. The Galway bid is both a city and county bid.
What is the status of Galway’s bid?
Galway has until 17th October 2015, to submit an 80-page bid document to the European Union. This bid document will outline Galway’s proposed artistic vision and proposed year-long programme of cultural events. On November 12th 2015, a team of 10 people from Galway will present the bid proposal to a panel of 12 European judges. By early December, Galway will find out if it has been shortlisted to the final two regions competing for the designation.

From the pulsing rhythm and blues of Gloria to the sweet, breezy folk rock of Tupelo Honey to the ecstatic gospel of Full Force Gale, Van Morrison’s music is marked by its emotional drive. Over five decades, he has created a musical vision as much steeped in the poetry of John Donne, Yeats, Rimbaud and Kerouac as it is in blues, jazz and soul. Moondance features exquisite Irish language versions of Morrison’s songs, translated by poets Cathal Póirtéir and Gabriel Rosenstock. They will be performed by Liam Ó Maonlaí, Hilary Bow, and The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra. Margaret Lonergan has created stunning screen projections of the lyrics.

As part of the national IGNITE Disability Arts Commissioning scheme, Ballina Arts Centre produced a film entitled Silent Moves – made by artist Aideen Barry working with two Ballina-based groups of people with disabilities: The Ridgepool Training Centre & Scannán Technologies. The film is a 28 minute silent movie – inspired by the classic black & white silent films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Harold Lloyd. Strong emphasis was placed on movement and mime and the groups also worked with dancer and choreographer Emma O’Kane. Using stop-motion animation techniques and slapstick motifs, the film has a particular aesthetic and is accompanied by an inspired musical soundtrack. The screening will be accompanied by live music.

Barnaby and Jade are complete opposites. When they are asked to give a science presentation together in school, neither could have ever imagined the journey it might take them on. A journey through memories of the past, to the very limits of their friendship, and even perhaps through the fabric of time… ‘Up to Speed’ is a funny, playful and poignant story about what it’s like to be different, about the power of friendship and the importance of being yourself.
Me, Michael is an engaging retelling of Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa through the character of a young boy, Michael Evans. It explores the magic of an imaginative child growing up without a father in 1930s Donegal. By sharing his family story, Michael finds a new strength in dealing with prejudice.

By SAMUEL BECKETT
DIRECTED BY MICHAEL CABOT DESIGNED BY BEK PALMER A country road. A tree. Evening. Vladimir and Estragon meet as dusk approaches. Estragon tries to remove his boot. Vladimir examines his hat. A conversation begins, a joke is interrupted. A carrot is eaten. The two men quarrel, then embrace. Unannounced, two eccentric travellers arrive. Seemingly master and servant, one stands weighed down at the end of a long rope, the other carries a whip. So begins Samuel Beckett’s 60-yearold masterpiece Waiting for Godot, a ground-breaking, anarchic meditation on the meaning of life and death. Part allegory, part burlesque, Beckett’s unique, timeless play moves seamlessly between absurdist comic sketch and captivating philosophical drama.

Whistle Down the Wind follows the fortunes of a fugitive caught between the prejudice of adults and the innocence of the young. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jim Steinman, together with Patricia Knop and Gale Edwards, reset the original story in Louisiana in 1959. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s emotive score combines hauntingly beautiful love songs and explosive rock music with lyrics by acclaimed rock’n’roll songwriter Jim Steinman. The score contrasts the relentless influence of the modern world with the traditional values of the old days – something which the community at the heart of Whistle Down the Wind yearns to return to.
