FROM THE MAYOR Dear Friends, Since taking office in 2010, we have consistently invested in meaningful opportunities for New Orleans residents, and these opportunities are helping to unite our community, improve the economy and reduce crime. We have made impactful progress in enhancing NORDC facilities around the city, ensuring that all New Orleans citizens have access to safe, state-of-the-art recreational spaces. We have tripled our NORDC budget, and we are also focused on expanding programming for our kids and seniors. Since 2010 we: ¯¯ Employed over 10,000 youth through NOLA Youth Works and NORDC Teen Summer Enrichment; ¯¯ Offered 41 youth camps through NORDC serving over 4,000 kids that provided recreational, cultural and enrichment activities; ¯¯ Invested over $158 million dollars to create state-of-the-art facilities which helped us triple the number of recreation centers, from four to 12; ¯¯ Offered free recreation activities to over 300,000 residents including Zumba, CrossFit NOLA Boot Camp, hula hooping, creative walking and line dancing ¯¯ And provided professional instruction to more than 13,000 swimmers. As we look ahead to the future, we have many projects and improvements on the horizon that will allow us to continue to serve all New Orleanians in the best way possible. We will continue to expand NORDC programming to provide additional safe recreational places to bring families and communities together. Sincerely,

Mitchell J. Landrieu, Mayor, City of New Orleans

iv

WELCOME Dear Friends, I would like to thank the citizens of New Orleans, Mayor Mitch Landrieu, the NORD Commission, City Council, and the NORD Foundation for their continued commitment to public recreation and community revitalization. Because of your commitment, and our teamwork the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORD) is on track to be one of the best recreation systems in the country. This year we opened the Milne NOLA for Life Recreation Center, and look forward to the opening of nine new and renovated playground clubhouses and two indoor year-round pools. We are also looking forward to hosting more than 8,000 of our counterparts during the 2017 National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference. Hosting the conference will allow us to showcase all of the great work that has been done and introduces this great city and culture to new friends and professional counterparts. Summers are always a busy time for NORD as we finalize plans for the largest summer camp and water safety initiative in the City of New Orleans. This summer we will offer 43 youth camps and 13 teen career camps serving over 4,800 youth and teens across the City. We look forward to continued growth of programming, and events as well as the expansion of non-traditional leisure activities like family bike rides & game nights, fishing, team building, and canoeing. Our programs are designed with specific levels for people of all ages, abilities, and interests. Please take a moment to view the community leaders, corporate partners and volunteer organizations highlighted throughout the brochure that support NORD and our community year round. Their vision and leadership are instrumental in NORD’s exciting transformation benefitting generations to come. It is our commitment to continue to foster and enhance the mental, physical, and social well-being of all our citizens. I encourage you to explore everything NORD has to offer. By participating in programming and utilizing facilities, you are also instrumental in strengthening NORD’s service to the community. NORD. Something for Everyone! Always Best,

Victor N. Richard, III New Orleans Recreation Development Commission Chief Executive Officer v

VOLUNTEERS People volunteer for a variety of reasons. Volunteering offers individuals the opportunity to contribute to their community and also provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge. NORDC offers five types of volunteer opportunities: Rec Centers Volunteer: There are short-term and long-term volunteer opportunities in our recreation centers. Opportunities include but are not limited to administrative assistance, program instruction, and program assistance. Special Events Volunteer: Volunteers are needed throughout the year to assist with seasonal, or one-time special events. Athletic Volunteer: Volunteer coaches serve as positive role models for our youth athletics participants and are needed year-round. Assistance is also needed for game operations. Volunteer Groups: Community members, organizations, or organized groups of 5 or more are welcome to spearhead a specific volunteer project, program, or assist with special events. Booster Clubs: Open to parents, guardians, and family members of children registered to participate in activities and programs, and any individuals without participating children who want to support a particular rec center or playground.

Volunteers registered with NORDC who contribute 30 hours or more during a tax year qualify for a $500 Louisiana State Income Tax deduction. For more information about volunteer opportunities please contact [email protected] or call (504) 658-3074.
