The Millbrook Educational Fountation is a private, non-profit corporation comprised of community members dedicated to enhancing the quality of our public schools. Our goal is to provide for program and facility needs beyond those supported by regular school funding sources. Please join us in pursuit of excellence in education.

Fourteen years ago, as the Millbrook community began discussions about building a new high school, a group of district parents, community members, and administrators established the Millbrook Educational Foundation as a way to provide a financial base for enhancing the education of Millbrook students. Now celebrating well over a decade of giving, the Millbrook Educational Foundation seeks out, investigates and gives grants for the enhancement of arts in residency, educational enrichment, and athletic programs that would not normally be available through the school budget and state funding. Funds are generated through an annual appeal, commemorative brick sales, the Taste of Millbrook, and the generosity of area foundations and individuals. MEF Trustees

2015 Giving Tree Facts:

• Items Requested: 99 • Unique Teachers: 43 • Total Requested Funds: $18,754 • Range of Request: $18 - $2,500 • Average Request Amount: $171

The MEF Giving Tree Each year the gorgeous handmade MEF Giving Tree sits under the tent not only as a beautiful centerpiece but as a symbol of the inspiration and future growth plans of our teachers. The tree gives our guests the ability to pledge their donated funds directly to a specific staff members needs or programs. Since 2013, using the tree the community has granted over $8300 worth of staff wishes. Each branch supports leaves that are made by our MCSD students. The individual leaves represent teacher wishes. Our hope is that the Taste guests take the leaves from the tree and pledge equivalent dollar amounts allowing MEF to grant those wishes. In the weeks after Taste, MEF assigns the money based on the donors intent without the teachers having to go through the full approval process. Giving Tree grants receive automatic approval. This proccess allows our guests to grant a staff member’s wish facilitated by MEF. SINCE 2001... ENDOWING OUR CHILREN’S FUTURE.

The Giving Tree debuts at “A Taste of Millbrook”, but wishes are availible to be granted all year long on the MEF website. New in 2015… for the first time, the tree was placed in Marona’s Market to allow patrons to grant “Tasteful Wishes” prior to the event. Guests were asked to select leaves representing items that cost between $5 and $25 that are needed at the event. Lending a Hand, before Taste allows MEF to spend less money on the event which ultimately means more money goes back to the district in the form of grants. If you should see the MEF giving tree at Taste, or outside of the event, we certainly hope that you will consider spreading a little magic and GRANTING a well deserved teacher or student a wish!

We are a lucky school district to have the support of the Millbrook community through the MEF. Millbrook Central School District had Smartboards K-12 paid by MEF when many districts had one in a shared room. Even small donations, like the math game, I Sea Ten, was a big hit with my first graders. The Taste of Millbrook event is always a fun night. I loved receiving the auction item, The Ancestry Family Tree. John Dux thoroughly researched our family and added in a history lesson. Another great auction item was two tickets to the tasting table on The Chew, taped in NYC. The Chew experience was a memorable day, thanks to Taste of Millbrook. The event is a win-win for the school district, the children, teachers and the community! ~ Sarah Rizzo 2015 - MILLBROOK EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Millbrook Educational Foundation Designated Fund In 2012 the Millbrook Educational Foundation celebrated over a decade of giving to the local community. Over all these years the generosity, involvement and interest of our supporters have enabled MEF to invest in innovative educational opportunities for the students of the Millbrook Central School District. Since its inception in 2001, MEF has awarded more than 120 grants to teachers and programs in the district, providing more than $650,000 in enrichment, technology, and arts education to all four schools.

We are proud to partner with the Millbrook Educational Foundation

MEF’s mission is planning for the future – our children’s futures. It is important that they are ready to take up the leadership roles in our communities. They are our employees, employers and civic leaders of the next generation. It is in our deepest interests that they have the best educational opportunities possible so that they are prepared for the complexities of life in the 21st century.

With this in mind, the Millbrook Educational Foundation created an endowment. We realized it was time to take the next step. Together with the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, we created the Millbrook Educational Foundation Endowment to ensure that MEF’s work would continue long into the future. This endowment will allow MEF to continue to be a vibrant partner with the Millbrook Central School District.

“sub-standard” element of the District’s athletic facilities. But, other needs were obvious as well such as the cinder track (not regulation size).

The Founding of MEF In 2001, four individuals from the Millbrook Central School District got together to brainstorm about  how they might organize an effort to receive outside funding to help the district offset future building plans and programs that fall outside of the district’s typical annual budget. This group was the start of the present day Millbrook Education Foundation, a 501C non-profit group established for community members to financially support projects that provide for the complete and enriched education of the children in the Millbrook Central School District. Begun as a grassroots effort to improve district athletic facilities, this group of community members ultimately sought out and received seed money from a local foundation. There was a sense of frustration with the founders about the limited improvements to the District’s facilities (both classroom & athletics) that came out of the Secondary Schools Needs Assessment Committee. Ultimately, the MCSD Board recommended (and the community approved) expanding the middle school / high school footprint by only two classrooms on the upper level, and gaining two more classrooms by moving the District Offices to the Thorne Building.  There was very little done to improve the athletic facilities in the District despite the architect’s recommendations. That report led to this new group (as mentioned above) investigating the District’s needs for improved athletic facilities. The  seed money funded a study of needs and options for athletic facilities. The group wanted to see a new gym  constructed as  the  current  gym was the most obvious SINCE 2001... ENDOWING OUR CHILREN’S FUTURE.

Their study said the work wasn’t feasible. Founders recollect that once  they  saw the costs for adding a new gym and ancillary facilities, such as a weight room, locker room for athletic teams, etc., it became obvious that it was a lot of money to spend to still end up with sub-standard classroom facilities and a very crowded campus.  And of note, the proposed location for the new athletic facility (gym, locker rooms, weight / training rooms) was going to be where the tennis courts are located at MMS. In the end, it just didn’t make sense to spend that kind of money for an athletic facility. Thus, early efforts were rolled into district capital project initiatives as determined by analysis of Alden Place overcrowding and the Secondary School Needs Assessment Committee report.   Our MEF founders knew they would need to rely on private money to fund the bulk of any improvement projects, so having a 501(c) (3) corporation was key. There was talk that a private donor(s) were willing to make significant donations but wanted the community (via a building referendum) to match whatever was donated. Upon establishing the  Articles of Incorporation for the application to NYS, the  MEF founders  decided to broaden the purpose of the corporation beyond just improvements to the District’s athletic facilities. This allowed them to collect and distribute funds for ANY purpose that benefitted the students in MCSD thus expanding its

The Founding of MEF (Cont) scope beyond athletic concerns. MEF was incorporated in NYS in 2001 and was granted 501(c)3 status as a not-for-profit existing solely to the benefit of the MCSD.  MEF used a generic model in developing the bylaws required for its incorporation. Later, a Bylaws Committee was formed whose purpose was to align the document to the manner in which MEF is run as an entity separate and distinct from the Millbrook Central School District and to edit the document for clarity and consistency.  As defined in current Bylaws, the MCSD is a member of the corporation.  As such, any proposed changes to MEF Bylaws must be ratified by MCSD Board of Education consensus or vote before the public. Over the years, proposed changes have been reviewed by MCSD legal counsel. Coincidently, two things happened that really kick started the foundation. In 2002, a generous parent wanted to donate $25,000 for a PC lab at Elm Drive. At the time, there was no way to really do it. MEF  became the  perfect vehicle thru which to make the donation. That parent funded two additional $25,000 grants one of which funded an auditorium renovation. In 2003, the Millbrook Rotary hosted a Marvin Hamlisch concert raising $30,000 for the music department. MEF was again a perfect vehicle to get the money into the district. The Hamlisch music money was a great learning experience. MEF actually bought a piano and then donated it to the district. The question became who owned it and how to handle insurance coverage. From then on, MEF awarded grants to the district and had the district accept the grants via the school board. The “A Taste of Millbrook” premiered in 2005 and was instrumental in giving MEF exposure to the community. As MEF grew, began fundraising and accepting donations, trustees worked to determine what grants to award as original donations were very specific. As the treasury grew, there was left over money that trustees began to SINCE 2001... ENDOWING OUR CHILREN’S FUTURE.

2015 MEF Look Book 27 award for small grants. The MEF board created a system to solicit grant requests as opposed to the prior model of suggesting what could be funded. Over the years, a stronger, well-funded MEF has made technology upgrades almost annually to the district. Examples include smartboard initiatives and Mac Labs. MEF also helps accelerate the District’s investment in our children by allowing it to implement initiatives more widely and broadly than might otherwise be possible. MEF allows the District to experiment with innovations and pilots prior to making a full scale commitment; examples include Project Lead the Way (funded with Tribute Gardens), and Science 21. Also, MEF Arts-in-Education money awarded annually to each of the district schools allows programming that wouldn’t be funded through the normal avenues such as Vanaver Caravan. And MEF encourages teachers to apply for Bright Ideas grants to encourage individual faculty members with ideas for improving education in the classroom or across grade levels. Funded grants include Lego Robotics, Light Microscopes, Drama Club cordless microphones, and model Writers’ Workshops, etc. Over the years, dedicated volunteers from the community have served as trustees stewarding this very special organization. MEF is financially sound and well-respected within the community. The impact of MEF is felt from Elm to Alden and MMS to MHS. Grants and partnerships help enhance the educational experience of every single student. This is a proud legacy. Annual gifts from generous donors and local foundations have helped to strengthen the Millbrook Educational Foundation. And now with the endowment in place, started in 2013 and discussed in this book, MEF is poised to partner with the MCSD in perpetuity. 2015 - MILLBROOK EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

“I want to say thanks again for the Grant last year given to the Art Department that allowed us to have digital cameras and video cameras in the Art classrooms. The art teachers and I use the cameras to photograph student art work and displays. Here are some ways that the students have been using the equipment: Students take photos of their completed work and upload them to the computers in the mac lab. Then they edit the photos and put them on their digital portfolios that they are building using the website weebly.com Students are currently working on creating tutorials of how to do different art processes they learned in Enriched Art 8. They are creating videos and photo slide shows to explain the process for the next year’s Enriched Class. You can see images of students filming and photographing the steps of the project. In 6th grade, computer arts students are creating a video in iMovie about “The day in the life of a 6th Grade Student”. Students will be voting on their favorite video to be played at next year’s 6th grade orientation. Students use video footage that I have taken throughout the year, and also record their own green screen introduction to the video. Once again, thank you for the continued support of our Community and the Art Department in Millbrook!” ~Jillian K. Cafarchio Art Teacher

The John and Agnes Marona Scholarship The John and Agnes Marona Scholarship was created in 2010 to honor the memory of John Marona. Mr. Marona was a respected long-time civic and business leader in the Millbrook community. He supported community programs and served on the board of the Bank of Millbrook while owning and operating Marona’s Market with his wife Agnes. Mr. Marona also graduated from Millbrook High School at the top of his class. The winner of the annual scholarship demonstrates traits that John and Agnes felt important: a high level of community involvement and school spirit with good academic standing. To date, MEF has awarded the scholarship of $1,000 to five winners:

MEF Scholarship A deserving recipient will be chosen by the Millbrook HS Guidance Department with the following criteria in mind. The student is someone that…

Getting massage is as an act of self care, not self indulgence ...

…has added to the school experience. …remained actively involved in the school community. …is a solid student, not necessairily at the Top of the Class. …has a reference from the High School Principal. …is probably not getting other large district scholarships. An example of an ideal candidate… “That line-backer that was in there every day, not necessarily a star, but someone that really contributed to the the school and enhanced the community.” The annual award shall be in the amount of $1,000. The scholarship check will be given to the student the month after the student begins college courses. The Guidance office may select an alternate with the understanding that the alternate gets the scholarship should the original recipient not qualify for whatever reason. 2005 - Michael R. Battenfeld 2006 - David Michael Kelly 2007 - Eric W. Buechele 2008 - Alexandra T. Slavin 2009 - Cody James Scalzo

$650,000+ FUNDS GRANTED TO THE DISTRICT

SINCE 2001

MEF is grateful for the ongoing generosity of its annual donors. Without their support we would not be able to fund the programs and initiatives that enhance the education of the MCSD students. Our donors are also our partners in our mission and we cannot thank them enough.
