Provincial Malaria Officer (National UN Volunteer) Duty station: Pakse, Lao PDR Background: The UN Volunteer, Provincial Malaria Officer, will work primarily in the five southern provinces of Lao PDR, which are the provinces with the highest malaria burden in the country. The World Health Organization will be the host agency for the UN Volunteer and they will be expected to work closely with the Provincial and District level malaria programs in the 5 southern provinces. These subnational malaria units are the coordinating focal points under which this position will operate, and the role of the position is to support them in implementing key activities under the National Malaria Strategic Plan, including surveillance, epidemic response and capacity building in using data for operational decision making. The UN Volunteer may also need to work in collaboration with the other NGOs, CSOs and UN agencies that are malaria stakeholders in this area.

Description of tasks: • Coordinate with the WHO Country Office Malaria team in Vientiane and provide localised technical assistance to the five high malaria burden provinces in southern Lao; • Work with the Provincial and District Malaria offices in the five provinces to effectively roll out the new CMPE Malaria Surveillance and Response Guidelines for high burden provinces; • Improve provincial and district malaria office capacity to regularly and systematically analyse and interpret monthly surveillance data in DHIS2 to address common programmatic issues such as commodity stock outs, district outbreak alerts, diagnosis and treatment irregularities and reporting problems; • Assist the provincial and district malaria staff to build evidence based management and operational systems that use results from routine data analysis to target appropriate interventions at hot spot districts and health facilities within the provinces; • Undertake other tasks as required.

Qualifications/Requirements: Education: • Bachelor degree in medicine, science or associated health field • Post graduate degree in public health, epidemiology or health systems is desirable, but not essential Professional knowledge and experience: • A minimum of two years of work experience in public health • Experience working with local Government • Experience working in disease surveillance and/or public health implementation Languages: • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken Lao



Good written and oral skills in English
