QuadMouse v3

The QuadMouse is designed to be operated by chin, lip, tongue, or finger tip with very little movement required to operate. This makes it ideal for people with MS, chronic fatigue, or no arm movement and limited head movement. As with any new computer interface, the QuadMouse requires patience and practice to master, much like learning to type for the first time. While it is very intuitive to use, new users should expect to accomplish tasks a bit more slowly at first when compared to someone using a regular hand-operated mouse. Be sure to review the proper positioning section below. Like any new physical activity or exercise do not overdo usage the first day to minimize the development of neck stiffness or pain.

Mounting the QuadMouse Broadened Horizons offers three mounting systems for positioning your QuadMouse for ease of use in a variety of locations.

Flex Arm Bed Mount: If the user is bedridden Broadened Horizons offers a flex arm bed mount system with optional hydration system to allow a person to control the QuadMouse with their chin, lips, or tongue with little to no head movement required.

24” Flex Arm Super Clamp: Broadened Horizons offers a 24” Super Clamp Flex Arm mounting system. This system offers the greatest versatility in positioning options. The Super Clamp may be mounted on the edge of desks, tables, or bed headboards. It also works great for attaching to wheelchair frame tubes or bed rails up to two inches thick. The Super Clamp is easily moved from one location to another and securely anchored in place.

24” Flex Arm with C-Clamp: The Broadened Horizons 24” Flex arm with Clamp is able to securely attach to a large variety of flat surfaces. This option is ideal if the user will likely be using the QuadMouse at a desk or table. In some cases the C-Clamp may also be attached to parts of wheelchairs such as an armrest or seat plate.

Under Desk 3rd Arm Mount: For users who will be using their fingers to operate the QuadMouse at their desk, Broadened Horizons offers a 3rd Arm Mount that bolts onto the desk. This mount features a place for the user to rest their wrist to prevent fatigue while holding the QuadMouse steady in whatever position the user desires. Please see the section on accessories for more information regarding operating the QuadMouse via fingertip.

Proper Positioning Ideally, the tips of the joysticks should almost touch the lips (or lie on either side of the chin if chin-operated) when the user is idle (not actively moving the joysticks) and in a comfortable position. If the user complains of abnormal neck pain or stiffness during or just after use, it is likely that he or she is straining to reach the joysticks and further adjustments should be made. Like any new physical activity or exercise, do not overdo it the first day. A user may experience some stiffness or minor neck pain in the process of getting used to using any mouth-operated device. Usually such pain or stiffness goes away after a few uses. Stiffness may also result from the stress of learning new skills or being tense using an unfamiliar piece of equipment. Endurance will improve with practice, and combined with a proper, relaxed posture should eliminate any pain and stiffness within a short amount of time.

Connecting the QuadMouse No additional drivers needed! Simply plug it in! The QuadMouse can be connected to your computer using the built-in USB connector or a USB to PS/2 adapter. The original mouse may remain connected to the computer for use by others and can even be used simultaneously to provide assistance or training.

USB Port Installation To install the QuadMouse using a USB port first turn on the computer. Insert the QuadMouse's USB connector into any available USB port. Your computer may inform you that a new USB device has been found and installed. The QuadMouse will be recognized as a standard mouse without any special drivers needed in Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and now even Android Tablets or our Android Smart TV HDMI Module.

Using the QuadMouse Each joystick has a different function which changes depending on if the QuadMouse is in mouse mode or programming mode. The right joystick controls the mouse movement, while the left joystick controls right clicking, left clicking, and programming the mouse. By default the QuadMouse starts in mouse mode each time it is turned on.

Using the QuadMouse: Mouse Mode Overview

Left Joystick: The left joystick is used to perform all of the most common mouse button clicks as well as emulate an eight button mouse.

Right Joystick: The right joystick controls the movement of the mouse on the screen.

Mouse Mode Details: Left Joystick ● The left joystick allows the user to perform the equivalent of left, right, and middle mouse button clicks. ● A double click is done by pushing the joystick twice in the same direction. ● A left or right click and hold is held until a normal left or right click is performed to release the hold. ● When a right click and hold is performed, a right click must be used to release the hold. A left click is then used to operate on the context menu that appears after the release. ● When a right click and hold is performed the QuadMouse flashes the red led light to confirm that the hold condition is active. ● When a left click and hold is performed the QuadMouse flashes the blue led light to confirm that the hold condition is active.

Using the QuadMouse: Speed Selection The QuadMouse has 4 Speed Channels (Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red) that can be selected by the user. Each Speed Channel is programmed with a “Speed Number” that determines how fast the mouse pointer moves across the screen. See programming section for further details. By default the QuadMouse starts with the Green Channel selected. To change the Speed Channel push up on the left joystick to enter programming mode, then push the left joystick either down, left, right, or up to select the Blue, Green, Yellow, or Red Channel respectively. The QuadMouse will then return to Mouse Mode with the new Speed Channel selected. In their default setting the Blue channel is the slowest, followed by Green then Yellow, the Red channel programmed as the fastest channel. When a Speed Channel is selected, the corresponding channel indicator light turns on and the QuadMouse returns to Mouse Mode. The pointer will now move at the speed programmed for the selected Speed channel.

To enter programming mode press up on the left joystick; all four led lights blink once to indicate programming mode is now active. Programming mode may be used to: select a Speed Channel, change the pointer speed setting for a Speed Channel, store and recall four different custom Speed Channel memory configurations, or erase all customizations and restore the QuadMouse to factory default settings.

Program Mode: Memory Channels Overview If the Speed Channel settings are not saved in a memory location, any changes made are lost when the QuadMouse is unplugged or otherwise loses power. The QuadMouse supports up to 4 users with four memory locations (designated A, B, C, D) for storing and recalling four different sets of Speed Channel settings. By default the QuadMouse starts by loading the Speed Channel settings from memory location A. The table shows the factory default Memory Channel and Speed Channel settings.
