LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE
04
OUR COMMITMENT With the mission to establish, further strengthen and entrench the Grundig brand in the Nordic market, Grundig has signed official sponsorship agreements with the Royal Nordic Yacht Clubs. The heroes of the Grundig Sailing Cup is none other than the fast growing J/70 sailing class. Our strategy is to activate the brand from a 360 degree perspective across all Nordic countries. Together with the Royal Nordic Yacht Clubs, Grundig will increase engagement around sailing, thereby revitalizing the sport for younger generations to come.

NORDIC SAILING UNIVERSE “…And out of the haze appeared a single long ship…… The long ship headed straight towards them, as though it’s helmsman had not observed their presence; and a stoutly built man, standing in the prow, with a broad beard visible beneath his bossed helmet, cupped his hand to his mouth as they approached and roared in a harsh voice; “Get out of our way, unless you want a fight!” – Frans G Bengtsson, The Long Ships, 1941.
Modern sport sailing has not the same mission as how Bengtsson describes strategic use of long ships in his epic novel of how Vikings conquered the world – even America (?) – approx. 1.000 AD. Yet, modern sailing is engineering skills preserved and fine-tuned through hundreds of years, even thousands. Following sailing closely also reveals the fighting spirit that evokes every man and woman at the starting line, and age seems to play little difference in terms of ambitions.
Nordic has about 2 million people exploring the water through utilizing a sailing vessel including SUP, small motor boat etc. Out of those there are 250.000 active members through official sailing federations, making the region the most dominant sailing area in regards to total population. Sailing has been on the Olympic program since 1900, and out of the 517 Olympic medals being granted, 107 of those has been awarded Nordic Athletes.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS Beautiful, dramatic and comprehensive in its nature and history, sailing is a modern, yet, universal symbol for human engineering ingenuity, team commitment and excellence. The sport resonates strongly with and appeals to our target group. Sailing has clear relevance to the Grundig brand dimensions.

THE BOAT J/70 - WORLD‘S FASTEST GROWING ONE DESIGN, TRAILERABLE SPEEDSTER The J/70 Speedster (7 meters) is a fully ramp-launchable, keelboat designed to fulfill a growing need for an easy-to-own, high performance one-design that is exciting to sail, stable enough for the entire family and easy to use. The worldwide J/70 fleet is over 1,100 boats strong and attracts some of the most talented sailors in the world. Without a doubt it helps to spark growth of numerous sailing leagues across Europe. At a number of sailing clubs, the J/70 is replacing tired, old keelboat fleets and can be seen to help reinvigorate membership by attracting younger sailors into the ranks. The future for this fantastic boat looks very bright, indeed!
“J/70 represents our most important project to activate members and recruit new athletes. Having a partner (Grundig) on board with a long term perspective, gives the club an opportunity to realize boats for training and a sailing cup already in 2016 season. Grundig Sailing Cup complements an activation program that are appealing, challenging and fun for members and sailors” - ANDERS KRISTENSEN

Grundig Sailing Cup
OSLO First race in Grundig Sailing Cup was completed at Aker Brygge Oslo, during the most beautiful Nordic summer conditions. From early morning the wind came from north. All local sailing athletes know about the changing conditions of Oslo’s inner harbor, but as the sun established the sea breeze altered from the south and created fantastic conditions on the race arena with a steady wind of 5-7 m/s. Heat sailing of four boats in each start, with the total of nine heats were executed in the warm and sunny days of Oslo. Team Vortex has been coached J/70 throughout the winter, and soon proved to be one of the favorites. With six out of nine wins, they took 1st place in the first competition. Team Kappseiling.no did not meet the expectations as favorites, and ended on a surprisingly 6th place. Grundig Sailing Cup Oslo were fortunate to host international competitors, were sailors had taken the long way from Isanbul Turkey. Without local knowledge about conditions team Deniz Fici and team Sinan Sumer made a respectful 4th and 5th place of the race. A partnership with sailing opens up for showcasing Grundig at some of the most stunning venues. During 8 days of Oslo Race week, it was estimated that 400’ people visited the beautiful harbour site Aker Brygge. With integrating design, live cooking shows from a variety of menus and hero products on display, Grundig were making constantly impressions and precious 1:1 interactions with people at the harbour site.

Grundig Sailing Cup
SANDHAMN The J/70 class has really established itself as one of the largest and most competitive one design classes in Sweden. It already has a strong foot hold in the Stockholm area, and is steadily growing in the southern and western parts of Sweden. The Swedish Grundig Sailing Cup series was initiated in Sandhamn, a well-known sailing hub in the Stockholm archipelago, in the beginning of June. 18 teams competed in six races during two days. KSSS, Grundig and Sandhamn offered fantastic organization and social activities and the conditions were blistering with strong northerly winds. All key ingredients for a success. SWE 623 with Micke Lindqvist handles the conditions and the competition the best and secured the win in the first Swedish Grundig Sailing cup, closely followed by SWE 713 Team Tyra and SWE 792 Fanny.

The second race of Grundig Sailing Cup in Norway was performed southeast of Oslo. Known for being a sweet spot for athletic sailing and a royal summer destination, Hankø were ideal to showcase Grundig Sailing Cup. Staying true to the concept of bringing sailing closer to people, a bald plan of setting the course in the narrow strait close to the public harbor were executed. Competing sailors and spectators could then easily follow the heats closely while enjoying the venue of Hankø Marina, and Hankø Yacht club on the opposite sides of the course. Strait is a perfect venue for heat

sailing that involve short, intensive courses. Team Vortex was not able to compete in Hankø, and Team SailLogic Racing did not miss the chance of getting a firm grip of the overall standings. After 14 heats in northern wind of 4-7 m/s, they completed nine victories, four second places and a third place. Thus Team SailLogic Racing took an obvious victory over Son+Moss in second place. Nine points behind, and in third place came team kappseiling.no with Halvor Friisk as captain.

Grundig Sailing Cup
ARENDAL Music festival, sun and vacation characterized the third race of Grundig Sailing Cup in Arendal – a true destination to capture the greatness of Norwegian summer. When sailing close to land, the strong continuously wind from southeast breaks into challenging and rickety conditions. The wind challenge made the scene for 18 highly interesting and tight heats just outside Arendal Harbour, easily followed by many visitors in Arendal. Again it was expected for Team SailLogic Racing and Team kappseiling. no to battle up for the top positions, but the local Team Torungen and Team Grundig decided otherwise. Seven first-place finishes for Team Torungen held to a clear second place for the overall race. The final podium position were conquered by corporate team Grundig under the leadership of captain Laurence Gibbons. Supprisingly achievement, but the team had made progression through the corporate sailing program. Team SailLogic Racing won the Arendal Race.

MARSTRAND Sandhamn was followed up by the Swedish championship at Marstrand on the Swedish west coast. Marstrand offered unparalleled sailing conditions with a strong westerly wind ranging from 10-15 m/s and an exhilarating sea state. Again, the race organizers together with Grundig, made for an unforgettable experience for the sailors, especially the regatta dinner were highly appreciated. In the strong winds, it was yet again Micke Lindqvist on SWE 623, that set the pace and is the current Swedish champion. This time Fanny SWE 792 finished second, followed by SWE 716 Mathias Hermansson in third, in a fleet of 27 boats.

Final race of 2016 Grundig Sailing Cup in Norway was brought to the west coast of Norway, hosted by a small city Florø with strong history for sailing. Location was partly selected due to strong wind conditions, but the race turned out to be challenging due to light wind. The second day offered better conditions with wind of 4-5 m/s, and it was finally completed 15 heats. Florø Race was weighted by 1.5 in order to make it possible to keep excitement around the overall standings.
After holding the position as leader through almost the entire season of Grundig Sailing Cup, there was little doubt which team would conquer the overall victory. Team SailLogic Racing delivered impressive fleets, and with seven wins they made a clear statement of beeing superior to competitors. Team Kappseiling.no made second place, a small point ahead of Team Grundig which really impressed with their inexperienced corporate crew.

With a few teams competing in J/70 world championship in San Francisco, it was an open game when sailors in the middle of September gathered for the finals of the Swedish GSC in Saltsjöbaden. Poor wind conditions cancelled all races on the first race day, but during second race day the wind finally arrived and the 18 boat strong fleet could conclude the season with three races. At the end of the day team Backau with Magnus Woxén won the final regatta, but the overall winners of the Swedish Grundig Sailing Cup was SWE 792, Team Fanny, followed by Tom Löfstedt aboard SWE 994 and SWE 623 Team Rocad in third.

Grundig Sailing Cup – Open Nordic J/70 Championship, the first Nordic Championship in J/70 class, got a smashing start with 11 races in three days under challenging conditions for 20 competing teams. The format was short fleet race races at max. 45 minutes, making the race intensive and engaging. The Grundig Sailing Cup – Open Nordic Championship was hosted by Royal Danish Yacht Club and Hellerup Yachtclub at the location of Skovshoved Harbour, close to Copenhagen inner city.
The DEN 573 with Trine Abrahamsen from Hellerup Sailing Club won silver medals in a series with a first place and three second places. Until the sixth fleet race, it seemed that they could threaten the Swedish crew but including a 11and 12-seat meant they lost important points, and instead concentrated on maintaining second place, which fully succeeded. Third place went to another Swedish team; SWE 994 with sailor Tom Löfstedt from KSSS who is also a former Olympic sailor in 470 and Star, and longtime Dragon sailor.
The first Nordic Championship of J/70 was dominated by a sovereign Swedish winner, the SWE 792 with Oscar Lindquist from KSSS in Stockholm. The crew won five races and had a sixth place deducted. The winner of the Nordic
