Checklist for Railing Projects – Why Railing Matters! Railing is often the unsung hero of a completed project. It quietly surrounds outdoor living space, gives protective parameters to a front porch, or offers support for walking on steps. Whether railing is part of a new project or a renovation, it can appear without much fanfare. However, railing keeps you, your family and friends – SAFE – so you want to be sure when you start any project (new or renovation), or you just want to check if your existing railing is in good shape, to keep these tips in mind: #1 Check for Split or Decaying Wood – If you are installing new railing on an existing deck or porch, be sure to make sure the wood is still sound. Pay attention to any areas that tend to remain damp, are regularly exposed to water or in contact with fasteners – if you can easily penetrate wood with a screwdriver or break off a sliver without splinters or wood is soft and spongy, decay may be present. Also, check for small holes in wood, which may indicate insects. If the framing of your deck is not structurally sound, you do not want to invest in lowmaintenance railing with a lifetime warranty. #2 Loose or Corroded Fasteners – Fasteners include nails, screws or anchors. If a fastener appears rusted or corroded around any railing, consider replacing it – a corroded fastener can cause deterioration in surrounding wood. Tighten any loose fasteners. The railing on the deck, porch or stairs should appear even without sagging and should not sway or move when tested. #3 Stairs – Check any railings or handrails to be sure they are firmly held in place. Check that the risers and stringers are securely attached and not decayed. Secondary handrail may be required by code on new decks. However, secondary handrail on stairs will increase the safety of the deck. #4 Railings and Banisters – These should be secure and this is especially important the higher your deck or porch is off the ground. Codes require railing for any deck or porch 18” or higher off the ground. Also, if the underside of the deck is accessible, check the support structure of the railing for decay. #5 Cleaning and Maintenance – Vinyl, aluminum and composite railings are very low maintenance and easy to clean. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggested cleaning tips for your appropriate material technology.

#6 Lighting and Electrical – For existing lighting, be sure all your lighting is working and clean any light covers to allow maximum light to shine through. Trim any plants or trees that may be blocking light. If you’re working on a new or renovation project, consider adding lighting to your railing or path – it is a great safety feature and adds to the beauty of the project. Be sure all electrical outlets are up to code and in good condition and childproof if necessary. Watch that any electrical cords do not present a tripping hazard. ******************************************************************************* How Fairway Railing Keeps You and Your Family Safe.
