1 – INTRODUCTION / WELCOME

Dear friends, Welcome to the 23rd Baja BP Ultimate Portalegre 500, in one more Automóvel Club de Portugal organization. Talk about Baja Portalegre, always evoke Jose Megre’s memory, the father of this race. Since 1987, this race don’t stop getting better with the most important names of the cross-country in the world, the media around the world support, and specially, the millions of fans always there, supporting his idols and making a real party of this race. For all this reasons, Baja BP Ultimate Portalegre 500, is the second race of José Megre Memorial, competition that envolve the 3 events cross-country organized by ACP – Rali Vodafone Transibérico; Baja BP Ultimate Portalegre 500 and 24 Horas TT Vodafone. Attending the world financial crisis and the preoccupation of ACP in reducing costs, taking for example Rali Vodafone Transibérico, the Baja BP Ultimate Portalegre 500 was concentrated in 3 days of intense competition. We thank the support of our sponsors – BP Ultimate, Câmara de Portalegre e Vodafone – and the collaboration of de town councils of Fronteira, Gavião, Crato, Monforte, Ponte de Sôr, Sousel, Alter do Chão, Nisa and Abrantes, and also the support of Monte da Pedra, Tolosa, Cunheira and Chança, NERPOR, Fercaça, Federação Portuguesa de Caçadores, Lusitano Ginásio Clube, SNB, Motorpress and Rádio Portalegre. We had also the basic support of all the elements of the organization, and the special support of the owners of the farms crossed by the race. This collaboration is the secret of the success and the longevity of the race. For all these reasons, we hope that you come to 23rd Baja BP Ultimate Portalegre 500. Carlos Barbosa ACP President

2 – HISTORY Brief History of the Event The Baja of Portalegre was the first cross country event held in Portugal, in June 1987 based in the border town of Portalegre. In fact the Clube Aventura, headed by José Megre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver had this event in mind since 1983, but it took him almost 4 years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and authorization from the local authorities. Dr. Miranda Calha, today a member of Parliament and, at that time Minister of the Sports, was behind this support. As the non competitive cross country events had started in 1982, also organised by Megre and some friends under the banner of Clube Todo-o-Terreno, and as some Portuguese drivers were competing in the Dakar Rally since 1982, (himself one of the factory drivers of UMM) Megre had a tremendous success when he launched the first Baja of Portalegre, which was the starting the Cross Country discipline in Portugal. 100 cars and more than 100 bikes entered the first Baja Portalegre, which was run under the name Rali Maratona de Portalegre – sponsored by Finicisa. The event was run on a circuit of 350 km to be done twice with no stops. Heavy rains and mud made the event a tremendous challenge for the drivers of both, cars and bikes. The second and third time edition, held the two following years, had the entries doubled, and the same mud condition. On the 4th edition, 250 cars and 450 bikes entered, after a memorable 1989 edition where only 10% of the starters finished!! Since the first year, the bike event was very international and the best riders came to Portalegre. From Serge Bacou, Thierry Charbonnier, Gilles Lalay, Stephane Peterhansel, David Castera, Cyril Esquirol, Richard Sainct, Alain Perez, Thierry Magnaldi, etc.. all have participated in the event. But only in 1995 and 1996, a foreigner rider won (Richard Sainct and Alain Perez).

The Event’s evolution 1987 1st edition of the event under the name Rali Maratona de Portalegre Finicisa. With 2 laps on 350 km itinerary. 1988 2nd edition with 2 laps on a 400 km itinerary (800 Km Finicisa – Portalegre) 1989 The event is run on a single lap of 500 km, under the name – 500 km Cerveja Sagres Portalegre. 1990 On the bikes, the race changed to one driver per bike. Entries rose to 250 cars and 450 bikes and an identical figure was reached on the following three years! 1997 11ª Baja Galp 500 Portalegre – The event gets a news sponsor and, due to heavy rain, was shortered to 200 Kms. The main National TV Network – SIC, started a 5 years strong coverage of the event. 1999 Baja Porta da Ravessa 500 / Portalegre – A new sponsor again and until this date. The Adega Cooperativa do Redondo, producer of some of the best Alentejo Wines (Porta da Ravessa), became the main sponsor. For the first time this event was ran on two special stages for cars. 2000 The event did not count for the National Championship due to the TV rights exclusive with SIC Television. 2001 A 3rd special stage was introduced for the cars, ran Sunday morning. The event is candidate of the FIA Cup of Bajas. 2002 As a FIA Cup event, the race is re-entered the National Championship, as a “Joker” event. National TV Station RTP was granted the exclusive TV rights of the event. 2003 Porta da Ravessa wine gives way to a new wine: Anta da Serra, of the same company, took the name of the event. 2004 Colin Mcrae made his first race with his new Nissan Pick Up, entered by Nismo, in Portalegre. 2005 201 bikes and 133 cars at the start, and a great entry from factory’s team, VW with Carlos Sainz (first cross country race), Bruno Saby, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Mark Miller, and Mitsubishi (Luc Alphand and Hiroshi Masuoka). Under some heavy rain there was a great race between Sainz, Kleinschmidt and Alphand, and the winner was the Mitsubishi of Alphand. 2006 211 bikes and 114 cars at the start. Marc Blazquez dominate the race. Only in the first leg Miguel Barbosa fight for the win, but he had to stop due to a puncture. 3rd was Alexandre Ré – with the new Nissan Pathfinder. Between the motos Mario Patrão won and Luis Engeitado was the fastest of the quad squad. 2007

Portalegre saw for the third time, Miguel Barbosa and Miguel Ramalho claim victory. In the motorbikes. the local António Maio wins.

2008 144 Bikes and 90 cars at the start. The new Pajero Racing Lancer with Stephane Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottet wins. In the motorbikes the local “hero” Antonio Maio wins agains.

PORTALEGRE

The Northern Alentejo - Portalegre - is almost a mythic region, a region where time is time. Reality lies here, waiting to be unveiled, in the endless plains and mountains, in the water that entertains and cures, in the great open spaces of nature or in those built by man both for ancient wars and for peace. Authenticity lies here, in the nobility that our forebear's lent to the stones of the dolmens and menhirs, to the armorial bearing of the manor houses and to the unique flavours generated in secret in the ancient convents and wineries. The truth also lies here, in the festival and the fair, in the music, the dancing and in the local art, where tradition is maintained. The city of Portalegre, with about 16000 inhabitants, grew up mainly from the 16th century on, moment when Portalegre became town and bishopric. Also the economical progress, result of the agriculture, trade and industry, took some noble and bourgeois families to the new town, where they built houses with some charm and greatness. The places to visit are open every day, except Mondays; the schedules are similar (9h30 -12h30 /14h – 18h).

SIGHTSEEING The Cathedral, built in 1556, suffered important decoration changes between 1737 and 1798 and exhibits beautiful tile panels and paintings. The Manufacture of Tapestries of Portalegre (the visit should be booked in advance) is the place where the ex-libris of Portalegre is made. The tapestries of Portalegre are unique because of the stitch that is used, a detail created by Manuel do Carmo Peixeiro at the middle of last century. This stitch, known as Stitch of Portalegreallows the extraordinary resistance, ability of expression and the amazing draw’s interpretation that characterizes the tapestries of Portalegre. The Municipal Museum (closed during 2007) displays religious art and wonderful collections of Portuguese ceramics; the House Museum of José Régio has religious art and folk art objects; the Tapestries Museum Guy Fino presents the ex-libris of Portalegre – reproductions of contemporary art made in wool. The Castle, built by order of the king D. Dinis in 1290 to defend this border area, has now a different use: a wood structure, signed by the Architect Cândido Chuva Gomes, unites the towers and presents a museum, an exhibition room and a restaurant. Known as the city of the seven convents, nowadays we can visit two: the Convent of St. Claire (occupied by the Public Library) and the Monastery of St. Bernard (occupied by the National

Guard School). This monastery was founded in 1518 by Jorge de Melo, a bishop whose mausoleum is a sumptuous masterpiece done in marble. TRADITIONAL PRODUCTS Popular sweets: boleimas (bread’s dough with cinnamon and sugar), bolo finto (a cake flavoured with anise) and almonds of Portalegre (almonds covered with sugar). Conventual sweets: the nuns of the convents of St. Claire and St. Bernard started the art of to do sweets, such as rebuçados de ovos (egg yolk with sugar, covered with sugar glace), manjar branco (rice floor with milk), lampreia (almond, egg yolk and sugar), queijo dourado (almond, pumpkin and sugar). In the other hand, Portalegre displays a set of traditional quality products with Protected Designation of Origin, like the apple of Portalegre (I.G.P.), the Cherry of St. Julião (I.G.P.) and the Portalegre’s sausiches (D.O.P.). LEISURE The region of Portalegre offers a variety of activities among which you are sure to find the right one for you. A hike through the Serra de São Mamede along footpaths marked out and provided with information is a true privilege. Trips by bike or four wheel motorcycles provide full scope for the spirit of adventure that lives within us all. Horse rides are another possibility at many rural tourism centres and at the Portalegre’s Equestrian Centre. There are many dams - Apartadura, Póvoa, Caia, Maranhão and Montargil – that you can use for sport. Some mountains are excellent to the practice of hiking and rappel.
