Introduction Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN ) is a feature of many underlying diseases. We report on a patient who presented clinically with RPGN and in whom further diagnostic procedures revealed advanced renal cell carcinoma. This association is rare, and only a few cases with a grim renal prognosis have been reported in the literature [1,2].

Case A 41-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital presenting with gross haematuria and oedema of the legs which had been present for 2 weeks. On admission, he had moderate to severe oedema of the legs; his temperature was 37°C, his pulse was regular at 88/min, his respiratory rate was 14/min and blood pressure was 220/120 mmHg. Physical examination was otherwise unremarkable except for a grade 2 systolic murmur along the left sternal border. The neurological examination was normal.
