B. Predict Predicting what you will be reading about is an important active reading strategy. You will now practice predicting by looking quickly at the photos, captions, and first and last paragraphs on pages 40-41. Then make a check next to the information you think you’ll read about. Remember, for now, you are quickly looking at the passage on page 40-41. _____

_____

How baby snow leopards survive in the wild.

_____

Conflicts between snow leopards and herders.

Step Two: Reading Comprehension Read the passage “Tracking the Snow Leopard” on pages 40 and 41. Targeted vocabulary words are in red. If you do not know the meaning of a particular word, write the word down on a separate sheet of paper. If you need clarification of the meaning of the word, ask an instructor or tutor to help you with it. Some vocabulary words are defined for you. If you find a word with a raised number at the end, you can find the definition at the bottom of the page. For example, on page 40, in the first sentence of the passage, you will see “When a snow leopard stalks 1….” When you look to the bottom of page 41, you will find the definition of stalk beside the number 1. It is important you read all captions or descriptions below the pictures to better comprehend the passage. Record your answers for page 42 below.

A. Multiple Choice Choose the best answer for each question. The reading skill involved is labeled in parentheses ( ) next to each number. (The word gist means the central idea or point of the passage.) 1. (Main Idea) _____

2. (Reference) _____

4. (Vocabulary) _____

5. (Detail) _____

3. (Reference) _____

B. Classification Match each answer at the bottom of page 42 with the program it describes. Write the letter in the appropriate circle.
