Ready for Reading
Welcome back to a new school year. I am so happy to be at Mark Twain full time this year. My name is Jayme Evans. I was here part time last year teaching reading. Melissa Drag will be returning this year in her full time position as a reading teacher at Mark Twain. We are both very excited to work with your children in Kindergarten through sixth grade classrooms.
Parent Book Club The reading department has two exciting programs that we want you to participate in this year. The first program is a parent book club that meets Monday nights at 4:30 in the Library. The first meeting will be September 9th. We will be reading the book 7Keys to Comprehension, by Susan Zimmermann and Chryse Hutchins. This book club will be very informal. The School will provide a book for you and we will read and discuss it practicing the strategies. There will be a calendar of events given the first night we meet. Hopefully our group will identify more ways to help our children comprehend reading through the varied techniques discussed. If you would like to attend call the office so that we can plan ahead and order books. I hope to see you there.
Our gracious PTA has purchased the second new reading program at Mark Twain. The computer program RazKids will be provided as an outside reading source for our students to use at school and at home. The program can be accessed on the web at razkids.com. This will provide students with leveled reading materials so that targeted reading practice (geared toward a child’s needs) can be available. Look for a flyer with your child’s teacher’s name and access code provided. This program is available to kindergarten through third grade students. There will be an informational meeting held September 9th at 5:30 in the Library. A parent from a neighboring school, currently using the program, will answer any questions that may arise. If you do not have internet access at home, we want you to attend so that we can develop a plan to provide for all students. I hope to see you September 9th. I’m looking forward to a great year.
