INTRODUCTION 

Water pipes serve as crucial life lines for maintaining daily lives. • Constantly function - ensure high reliability. • Malfunction/damage - minimum/rapid recovery.

Discharge monitoring will go a long way in; detection of pipe bursts and quantifying discharge for engineering areas such as water storage design, water rationing, ensuring that customers are receiving water regularly and efficiently.  The Water Act 2002 seeks to; • initiate reforms in the water sector and, • to develop a national monitoring of and information on water

resources.

PROBLEM STATEMENT 

Water pipes breakage results in: • quantitatively large volume of water loss from the time of

breakage up to the time of delayed repairs. • causing major financial losses. 

The delays for repairs happens due to lack of a timely alert system to prompt the water providers of the problem at the time and locations (approx) of occurrence.

Non-revenue water that results after installation of illegal connection - huge amount of revenues losses. Thus, the need for a systems to support a rapid recovery.

General:

OBJECTIVES

• To develop a real-time web-based water discharge

monitoring map application 

Specific:

• To develop a module to send the data availed to the gprs

module by the sensor to a database. • To develop modules for parsing data values to and from the database. • To develop a module for water discharge visualization at point locations on a map. • To develop a module to display multiple water discharge charts for comparison between two sensor locations.

SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE (1) Remote Monitoring Unit

Programs and Data Application Server (hosting) Php Data request

Data response Client: Internet Browser (www.imaps.pixub.com)

APPLICATION FEATURES 

The interface customizations included: • Onclick features - for network display, sensor location display and areal boundary display. • Google maps sensor locations icons • Infobox with interactive real time charts visualization at sensor locations. • Pop up interactions of all the map elements for displaying their properties to the user • Pop up box with multiple Y-axis values for water discharge comparisons between two sensor locations. • Tooltip chart capabilities – chart queries

FINAL MAP APPLICATION

CONCLUSION 

The ideation and development of the real-time web-based water discharge map application was a success with the use of web mapping tools and javascript capabilities.

Web mapping tools - a convenient for real time map applications  effective spatial decision support tool for water network failures mitigation and thus improving the efficiency of recovery operations.

The application provides the basic water monitoring platform that can be used for rapid recovery measures.
