West Point Grey Community Association
President’s Message We are so fortunate to have the beautiful Aberthau Mansion as part of our Community Centre. It’s a perfect venue for our growing Arts and Culture activities and programs. The Board of Directors at the West Point Grey Community Association [“WPGCA”] together with staff at the West Point Grey Community Centre [“WPGCC”] are delighted to offer you many new and innovative programs for the Spring and Summer seasons – new Arts and Culture courses and workshops, Health and Fitness programs, and Special Events that bring together our community at Aberthau Mansion. We are experimenting with a new and larger format for our Recreation Guide. This larger format will improve our ability to showcase our activities and events at our Community Centre. Do browse through this Recreation Guide and let us know if you like this larger format [or not] and our array of programming for the spring and summer seasons. We strive to offer something for everyone. What else do you wish to see? Is there anything else you wish to tell us about our programs? We welcome your input. To highlight a few new tasty offerings, the Pottery Studio will be doing a new “Pottery and Wine night”, and workshops through our Artist in Residence in the Garden will include topics such as: Learn to Make Quiche, Green Vegetable Fermenting, Water Kefir: homemade fermented sodas, and “Kim-Chi”. Designed on purpose to get our collective taste buds tingling! Our ever-popular Summer Day Camps this year will again include a variety of fun activities such as Skimboarding, Tennis and Out-Trips. Due to popular demand, we are again offering a variety of camps over Spring Break. Our Annual Sandcastle Competition, with up to 600 children participating from all over the city, is to be held on July 22nd. We are proud to continue this event into its 25th year! I am excited to report that personal training at WPGCC has been growing steadily over the past year. The personal trainers at WPGCC specialize in inner unit core training, improving mobility and strength to support joints, youth training, posture and alignment, and functional movement that makes us stronger in our daily activities. The personal trainers say that continuing to move throughout our lives is important. Moving well is even better! I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to our dedicated and talented staff, volunteers, committee members, and Board of Directors. Their individual and collective contributions in making this Community Centre a success are countless. A special shout out to our Recreation Programmer II, Natalie Vermaas, and Acting Recreation Programmer and Jericho Hill Supervisor, Hardeep Bassram, both of whom worked very hard to continue programs and services in the absence of a second full-time Recreation Programmer II during the past year. Bravo Natalie and Hardeep! We look forward to serving you again and thank you for your on-going support of the West Point Grey Community Centre. Enjoy our beautiful Spring and Summer seasons! Sincerely, Shamim Shivji, President West Point Grey Community Association
