STATE OF THE

ART LIGHTNESS

9

1199 SUPERLEGGERA

A BOLD COMBINATION OF TECHNOLOGY AND LIGHTNESS The 1199 Superleggera is the realisation of a dream shared by many of Ducati’s most passionate employees - to offer the most discerning enthusiasts a motorcycle that breaks previous barriers of lightness and performance, and is state-of-the-art in its every detail. The result is clear: this incredible motorcycle has over 200 horsepower in its homologated version (including everything needed to ride on the street, such as mirrors, headlight, catalytic converter and licence plate holder), and weighs only 166 kg ready-toride without fuel, which is practically the same as a WSBK lining up on the starting grid of a race. The 1199 Superleggera has the best power-to-weight ratio of any homologated bike – by a large margin! It is an absolute work of art, and a limited edition of just 500 units. To offer an insight to the methods used to achieve its unprecedented light weight, I give you a figure that seems almost trivial: 9 grams. This is the reduction in weight that was achieved by producing the radiator cap in aluminium rather than steel (its usual material). By paying attention to this detail, we obtained a 33% weight reduction for this single component. And it was in precisely this way, by analysing each component and asking ourselves how to minimize its weight and maximize its performance, that we created the 1199 Superleggera. From this process emerged exceptional components such as its magnesium monocoque frame, carbon rear subframe, titanium fasteners, two-ring race pistons, and many other details. As a final example of this bike’s special nature I’d like to highlight another wonderful detail that is less visible: it features anti-wheelie control, which can be adjusted on-the-fly to maximize acceleration - a feature which will be most useful on the track, obviously! 1199 SUPERLEGGERA THE PROJECT

MAGNESIUM, CARBON FIBRE, ALUMINIUM AND TITANIUM FORM THE 1199 SUPERLEGGERA. MORE THAN 200 HP IN 166 KG: THE BEST POWER-WEIGHT RATIO OF ANY PRODUCTION BIKE

The 1199 Superleggera was born to be Ducati’s technological flagship, representing the maximum expression of lightness and performance from the Borgo Panigale-based manufacturer. There are numerous, significant innovations on this new single-seat version, designed to be appreciated by enthusiasts, especially during use on track. Starting with the layout of the 1199 Panigale, Ducati’s designers and engineers got to work with two simple, but far from banal, objectives: to reduce the weight (of what was already the lightest production Superbike in the world) and increase performance. The first component on which they worked is one of the two pillars, along with the Superquadro engine, of the Panigale project: the monocoque frame. Redesigned and sand-cast in magnesium alloy, it weighs only 3 kg, which is a 1.1 kg savings from the Panigale’s aluminium version. This weight savings was achieved without altering the rigidity or strength of the frame. Another

12

important contribution to the lightness of the bike derives from the carbon rear frame, redesigned from scratch and weighing in at just 800 grams, compared to the 2.1 kg of the other versions. Also extremely important in this weight reduction process is the role played the Marchesini magnesium alloy forged wheels. The 1 kg weight savings (total) of the wheels is especially important, and greatly enhances the dynamic qualities and manageability of the 1199 Superleggera in braking, handling, and acceleration. Extensive use of carbon fibre for the side fairings, front cowl, tail, and other details also allowed for a further weight reduction of about 1 kg while, more importantly, the entire exhaust system was redesigned to cope with the advanced engine performance and take off further weight thanks to the use of titanium in both the mufflers and manifolds (-2.6 kg compared to the steel system). Finally the suspension: Ohlins of course, featuring an FL916 fork with fully machined bottoms, Titanium Nitride coating, and stress-optimized outer

intervention of several different parameters including DWC, DTC and EBC, while riding. Another standout feature of this very exclusive Ducati, contributing further to its identity as the closest streetbike to those competing in the Superbike Championship, is a system which automatically calibrates the electronic control systems and final transmission ratio, to adapt to the rolling circumferences of different tyres. Finally the DDA+ system (Ducati Data Analysis), that allows you to acquire and download data regarding the main functional parameters of the bike, is now enriched with lean angle acquisition.

The electronic equipment is enriched by the DWC (Ducati Wheelie Control) system, based on an inertial platform with electronic gyroscopes that provide the parameters to the ECU, with 8 settings. Furthermore, through two dedicated buttons mounted on the left handlebar it’s possible to modify the level of

The bike is completed with a host of details including a titanium racing exhaust which increases maximum power by 5hp, a larger windscreen, front and rear paddock stands, a bike cover, and kits to remove the mirrors, license plate holder, and sidestand. A fan would have trouble dreaming of anything more.

1199 SUPERLEGGERA THE NEW ENGINE

The new engine is lighter, with less inertia and friction and the ability to rev to higher speeds.

A new lighter piston, new camshafts and valves in titanium: the Superleggera is a product of Ducati Corse’s experience.

ALL THE SECRETS OF THE NEW ENGINE OF THE 1199 SUPERLEGGERA, MAXIMUM EXPRESSION IN TERMS OF PERFORMANCE DERIVED FROM THE SUPERQUADRO, BORGO PANIGALE’S LEGENDARY TWIN-CYLINDER The engine of the 1199 Superleggera is derived from that of the 1199 Panigale, the now famous L-shaped twin-cylinder Superquadro with 112x60.8 mm of bore and stroke, with solutions that descend directly from Ducati Corse’s experience on track. The principle areas of evolution regard the heart of the engine itself: or, above all, the use of a piston with impressive geometry that modifies the combustion chamber, raising compression from 12.5:1 (as on the 1199 Panigale) up to 13.2:1. Another innovation derived from Superbike is the use of a two ring piston instead of the usual three. “Its main advantage is the weight reduction, which comes down by 10-15% from the approx. 600 gr of the original piston on the 1199 Panigale” explains Vincenzo De Silvio, Engine Design Manager. “The second advantage is the reduction in friction as well as, of course, less inertia that allows the engine to accelerate more quickly.” The profile of the camshafts changes of course, with a new distribution diagram where intake is delayed in order to maximise the use of flow at high speed. A choice that, as with racing engines, allows for a greater replenishment of the cylinder and better combustion.

The power reaches more than 200 hp, creating a better torque and power curve at all speeds.

Another innovation is the use of tungsten inserts to balance the crankshaft. Tungsten is a material with greater density than steel, about 18 gr/dm3 versus 7.85 gr/7dm3, that allows for the concentration of significant mass in a small space, better balancing the alternating masses of the rod and piston and allowing the engine to be lighter and accelerate more quickly. The use of tungsten has allowed us to reduce the weight of the crankshaft by about 400 gr. The engine also uses titanium exhaust valves (in addition to its titanium intake valves), further reducing weight and inertia to benefit its eagerness in making power. The combination of all these modifications brings the maximum power to more than 200 hp and results in a higher power and torque curve at all speeds. We add to this a new sensor, derived exclusively from Superbike and applied to the Quick Shift gearbox, which serves to determine the position of the drum and makes for a quicker gear change. This Quick Shift means that the rider barely ever has to come off the throttle (the system acts on ignition and injection), and the sensor controls the position of the gears to reapply torque when the gear is effectively engaged. All of this reinforces the pure and focused spirit of the 1199 Superleggera, which is essentially a World Superbike with a license plate. The pistons, valves and crankshaft are all derived from the Superbike.

The 1199 Superleggera was born to be the closest road bike, in terms of weight and power, to the bikes competing in the Superbike World Championship: 166 kg in its riding configuration without fuel and more than 200 hp. In this project the intense research into lightness took every single component of the bike into consideration and also led the complete redesign of some key elements of its suspension set-up: the monocoque frame is one such stand-out. «The idea of a monocoque frame - explains Simone Di Piazza, R&D Vehicle Design Manager – was born in Ducati Corse and they patented the concept; originally it was produced in carbon and mounted on the MotoGP bike. The innovation of this concept

16

of frame lies in its ability to integrate numerous functions, something that inevitably led to a significant reduction in weight. The frame is fixed directly to the two cylinder heads and also acts as an airbox, housing the throttle bodies and air filter; this allows us to have a narrower front section, advantageous in terms of aerodynamics. It integrates perfectly with the other components of the bike including the front air filter and the engine, ensuring better closure of the airbox. It also guarantees the possibility of regulating the steering head angle, a vital element to indulge the needs of more expert riders, derived directly from our experience in the Superbike Championship. The 1199 Panigale is equipped with an industrialised version of the original monocoque frame, produced in aluminium alloy using the shell fusion process.

24,3050

With the 1199 Superleggera we needed to take another step forward in terms of lightness and this is why we turned to a light and strong material like magnesium. This is a unique application among production motorcycles in all the world. With a careful redesign of the frame’s lines, wall thicknesses and its internal bracing using sophisticated techniques of finite element analysis, we were able to achieve the extraordinary result of a 25% weight reduction compared to the aluminium version; it went from 4.1 to just 3 kg, while its characteristics of rigidity and strength, necessary for a machine with such extreme performance as the 1199 Superleggera, remain unaltered. Another design difficulty was having to retain the interfaces with those components adjacent to the frame. Due to the particular characteristics

of magnesium, we had to carefully evaluate the galvanic compatibility of the various materials and, as a result, redesign all the connection systems of the components that are attached to the frame. Finally, in order to produce such a complex component, we had to combine thorough knowledge of the product and its final use, one of Ducati’s areas of expertise, with the specific product and production knowledge of the world’s best specialist suppliers, who have essentially become Ducati’s partners in co-design. The frame is produced using a process of sand casting, technology typically used for those components destined for competition and suitable for the limited number of units - with only 500 examples of the 1199 Superleggera being produced.»

ACCESSORIES

FREEDOM OF CHANGE: AMENDMENTS ALL YOUR OWN ACCESSORIES ARE ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTAL ELEMENTS OF THE DUCATI WORLD. WHETHER AESTHETIC, TECHNICAL OR FUNCTIONAL, THEY ARE ALWAYS DESIGNED FOR THE PASSION THAT DRIVES EVERY DUCATISTA IN HIS CHOICES: TO BE UNMISTAKABLY UNIQUE AND TO ALWAYS GET THE MOST OUT OF THE BIKE

Every Ducatista, right from the moment of purchase, has dozens of different possible ways in which to transform his bike into a Ducati that is unique in the world. Whether browsing the catalog or using the virtual configurator on the Ducati website, the only challenge is in choosing what suits you. All Ducati accessories are contextually designed for the bikes themselves. The development process is divided into phases: in the first, the various personalizations for that model are analyzed. In the next phase, the ideas and types of accessories are shared with marketing, the Design Center, the technical designers and others all the way to the production department. We even ask for feedback from international branches. Among the accessories, the exhaust is surely the “must have” for every Ducatista. “A large number of our clients try to improve the aesthetics, sound and performance of the exhaust”, Lorenzo Uliani, Accessories Project Manager, tells us. “The exhaust is the perfect example of an accessory that takes a long time to develop and create because it must satisfy very different needs”. In this particular case, the designer’s idea, fundamental in the redesign of the tubes’ volumes and dimensions, is then passed on for evaluation by the technical design team which contributes to the final result by choosing the optimal materials, which in turn influence weight and performance.

18

All these factors are closely linked. The aesthetics, weight, and sound of an exhaust are all determined by the materials used. But each has different characteristics. Carbon is more attractive and lighter than steel. Titanium is even more refined than carbon. Materials are selected for each part of the exhaust down to the last detail so that their combination produces the best final product. «First and foremost, Ducati means performance, sportsmanship, and design; values that, for us here in Borgo Panigale, are always the center of attention», says Uliani. However, the Ducati accessories catalogs are aimed at all types of clients, not only those who enjoy track riding but touring and urban riders, as well. Usage between traditional categories is also considered, often resulting in accessories that improve the usability and appreciation of a model. One example is the tank bag for the Panigale, designed for those who want a sports bike but also want to use it on weekends. The accessories catalog therefore ranges from carbon parts (mud guards, radiator covers), to technical details that improve performance, to more touring-related products that include windscreens, power outlets, panniers, comfort seats, navigation kits, and heated handlebars. «Our client is always at the center of the accessories department», states Damiano Pavanello, Commercial and Marketing Manager for accessories, «It is for him that we work with our official dealers so that he can feel unique and special. So that, perhaps during dedicated events like the Ducati Garage Contest at World Ducati Week he’ll receive a prize for having created the best customized bike of the year!»

ELETTRONICA SUSPENSION The ECU manages the information coming from the accelerometers, throttle and ABS (via CAN), to constantly regulate the shock valves in the most appropriate way based on the Riding Mode and road inputs like potholes, bumps, braking, acceleration, etc. 1- Accelerometer for the unsuspended front masses 2- Accelerometer for the suspended front masses 3- ECU and accelerometer for the suspended rear masses 4- Accelerometer for the unsuspended rear masses

2 3

1 4 The first motorcycle suspension was simply the robust hands of the brave motorcyclists of the day. Thankfully, suspension technology has progressed greatly to include systems, regulations and functions unimaginable just twenty years ago. Initially developed absorb impact to ensure comfort and safety, today’s suspensions include functions and capabilities that involve and affect the entire set-up and dynamics of the bike. So, when we talk about suspension, it’s natural to deal with several themes all at once, such as comfort, safety, stability, road grip, weight distribution and every aspect that affects the ride quality of the bike.

THE ACTIVE SUSPENSION ON DUCATI BIKES OF TODAY AND TOMORROW THE DUCATI SKYHOOK SUSPENSION (DSS) SYSTEM IS AVANT-GARDE TECHNOLOGY AT DUCATI. ENGINEER EMANUELE BORSETTO, ELECTRIC/ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS MANAGER, TELLS US HOW THIS LATEST GENERATION OF ULTIMATE-TECHNOLOGY ACTIVE SUSPENSION WAS CREATED, AND HOW IT AFFECTS COMFORT AND SAFETY.

20

In the last decade we have a seen a host of increasingly sophisticated solutions to improve suspension’s ability to do its job, in the form of different springs, shocks and lever arrangements. On topof-the-line bikes it is now common to find adjustments for spring preload and calibration of the shock in compression and extension, as well as progressive springs and increasingly efficient hydraulic systems. These advancements culminate in the semi-active suspension of the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S. This bike has USD forks and a Sachs progressive single shock managed with the innovative DSS. This radically new technology has created a monumental shift in the riding experience because the semi-active dynamic suspension is able able to modify its behavior to adapt automatically and continuously to the riding conditions.

The rider can choose between four Riding Modes that modify various elements of setup including ABS, traction control, engine and of course suspension, ensuring optimum dynamic behavior in any riding situation. The DSS system uses sensors that read both the position of the wheel on the road and the oscillations of the bike’s chassis, enabling the suspension to react and modify its set-up in just 20 milliseconds— basically in real time—by activating an electronic valve inside the shock. The Skyhook algorithm, using data from the bike-mounted sensors, regulates the shock valves in the most effective way, continuously offering the rider maximum comfort and maximum safety. The most extraordinary aspect of the Skyhook system is its ability to combine various advantages, considerably widening the range of use of the suspension and therefore the bike. With everyday riding, for example, it adjusts to respond as a firm sport suspension or a softer touring one, depending on the type of bumps encountered, offering the rider a never-before-seen range of response for all-around use. With everyday riding, for example, it adjusts to respond as a firm sport suspension or a softer touring one, depending on the type of bump encountered, offering the rider a wide range of response for all-around use, as has never before been seen.

D

ucati has had a long life. Founded in 1926 to manufacture electro-mechanical products, from radios to razors, only after the Second World War did it begin to manufacture motorbikes. Initially it made mopeds, with the famous Cucciolo, then gradually began to produce bikes with small cc engines, eventually leading up to the maxi twin cylinders of the 70s. But it’s over the last thirty years that Ducati has become a true protagonist in the sports bike sector and in competition. Claudio Domenicali, Ducati’s CEO, has experienced this all from the inside. We asked him to run through this incredible history made up of

Ducati 916 – 1994

passion, technology and design. And he, a keen motorcyclist, tells it through the story of Borgo Panigale’s Superbikes. «I think that history can teach us something for the future», begins Domenicali. «To remind us of those strong values that make Ducati inimitable, and to provide an idea of which direction to take.» At the beginning of the 80s Ducati had become a state-owned company. It was part of the IRI (Institute for Industrial Reconstruction, a public body) and its owners certainly had no great passion for bikes. «Luckily, in 1983» continues Domenicali, «Ducati was acquired by Claudio and

Ducati 851 – 1987

Gianfranco Castiglioni and became part of the Cagiva Group. In this way the firm passed into the hands of two great bike and racing enthusiasts.» Their passion immediately bore fruit and allowed Massimo Bordi, «A talented engineer, to put into concrete practice two essential sparks of intuition: to make red the company’s trademark colour (hence the motto “the Reds of Borgo Panigale”) and to bring about the technological innovation that was required.» These were the years of the 851, and of Marco Lucchinelli, who gave Ducati its first Superbike victory at Donington in April 1988.

23

HISTORY OF THE COMPANY

THE ESSENTIAL FACTORS FOR SUCCESS ARE A LOVE OF THE PRODUCT AND OBSESSION WITH PERFECTION

«The break with the past is represented by the superb 851», enthuses Domenicali, «monochrome red, with its extraordinary Desmoquattro engine: liquid-cooled, four-valve and with fuel-injection.» Marco was the first of an extraordinary series of champions who have made Ducati a legend: Fogarty, Bayliss, Capirossi, Stoner, Checa; just to name a few of the greatest and best-loved. Ducati became synonymous with technology, racing and red. In those years Ducati wrote some of the most beautiful, intense pages of its history. Based on the experiences gained in competition, the 851 and 888 became the first production Superbikes available to the large community of

24

fans. And in 1994, the 916 was born - the bike that rewrote the history of road bikes in the 90s, and that is still today considered one of the most beautiful motorbikes ever created. “Beautiful, sexy and extreme, designed by Massimo Tamburini, the 916 is one of the most fascinating bikes in the history of motorcycling”, Domenicali tells us. However, the successes achieved in SBK and the great reception for Ducati branded production bikes were unable to prevent a new crisis, caused by the not so careful management of the company by the Cagiva Group. In September 1996 they were forced to hand over ownership of Ducati to the American investment fund, Texas Pacific Group.

The new management initiated some serious commercial and marketing changes: Ducati began to be transformed from a purely manufacturing company, to a Brand touching many aspects of the motorcycling world. These were the years of the first World Ducati Week that saw the community of Ducatisti meet up for the first time at Misano. They were also the years of corporate finance, with Ducati’s listing on the Stock Exchange in 1999; and of maximum production capacity, with more than 40 thousand bikes manufactured in 2000. Very intense years, also in racing. Ducati won 11 SBK world titles (including Troy Bayliss’s triple in the World Superbike

Championship - 2001, 2006, and 2008 - which left an indelible mark on Ducatisti hearts). It also made a triumphant start in MotoGP, with Loris Capirossi reaching the podium in the first race, achieving pole position in the third, and winning the sixth. In 2006, the Italian group Investindustrial became Ducati’s majority shareholder and in 2007 the 1098 was born. It took the place of the 999, and was quickly voted “Best Design” and “Best Supersport Bike” from the Motorcycle Design Association. These were the years in which the centrality of the product was reaffirmed and the foundations were laid for the new philosophy for development of Ducati bikes, which

has lightness and performance as its cornerstones. The 1199 Panigale, launched in Autumn 2011, is a very good example of this. With the arrival of Audi, a new chapter in Ducati’s history began. «We share many things with our new shareholder, Audi», states Domenicali. «I would like to highlight one: the essential factor for success is a love for the product and obsession with perfection.» So what lies in Ducati’s future? «We want our bikes to be excellent. Their performance must be a benchmark but also always completely available to the rider. In a nutshell, we want our bikes to be lightweight, beautiful and for them to make an ever-growing number of fans continue to dream!»

THE NEW MONSTER

THE KING OF NAKEDS MAKES ITS DEBUT IN A NEW VERSION WITH THE BIGGEST ENGINE SIZE AND POWER IN ITS HISTORY: A MONSTER EMOTION TAKEN TO THE EXTREME

Y

ou see it from a distance, maybe even just a glance, but you have no doubt, it’s a Monster! As you draw closer you start to notice that something important has changed: it is more imposing, bigger, more aggressive than its predecessor, but maintains that family feel which these models offer. Then, finally, you see it up close but, though it’s unmistakably a Monster, compared to the models you are familiar with everything is new right down to the last bolt. If you then have the chance to sit on it, you notice that this model is narrower, that your feet can easily touch the ground (thanks also to the adjustable-height seat), that the riding position is more comfortable and ergonomic, and that it has a wide handlebar that enables a slightly forward-leaning set-up to combat wind resistance when riding. However, it is in technical terms that this Monster is really completely new and different. For the first time it adopts the solution of a loadbearing engine connected to the front frame and rear subframe, which is a concept that was first introduced on the top-of-the-range 1199 Panigale. In this case, however, in place of the

aluminium casting the classic Ducati trellis frame has been used, albeit shorter, lighter and much more rigid than that used previously. The braking system has also been borrowed from the Panigale, and is certainly the highest performing and most advanced system currently available. The engine is also new: it is derived from that of the Multistrada 1200 of which it maintains the engine size, but it has been significantly revised in order to provide a perfect fit for this new model: the cylinder heads have been redesigned to enable the solution of the load-bearing engine to be adopted, but also the power and torque have been optimised by changing the compression ratio, using new exhaust pipes, new intake manifolds and throttle bodies, and remapping the control units which manage the engine and the various riding modes available. The result is a bike which exaggerates and unites opposing elements: boasting an extra 100cc and 45 hp compared to the 1100 EVO which it replaces, and consequently higher performance, while at the same time being a more comfortable and easier ride for the city.

TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS The new Monster has the 1200 cc Testastretta 11° DS engine which has already been used on the Multistrada but has been significantly revised for this new application. In this version the twin-cylinder Desmo can supply fully 106.6 kW (145 HP) @ 8,750 rpm with a torque of 124.5 Nm (12.7 kgm) @ 7,250 rpm in the S version, but has an extremely smooth power delivery. Moreover, it is connected to the new front piece in steel tubing which is a load-bearing element of the bike, as in the 1199 Panigale: this solution guarantees an excellent weight/power ratio which enhances the speed and manoeuvrability of the bike also thanks to a dry weight of just 182 kg. Finally, the Riding Mode technology (which includes Ride-by-Wire, three-level ABS, and Ducati Traction Control (DTC) – the latter two of which can be switched off) once again guarantees outstanding dynamic performance and the highest possible level of safety.

28

29

THE NEW MONSTER

THE NEW MONSTER HAS BEEN DESIGNED SO THAT IT CAN BE USED BY ANY RIDER AND MAKE THEM FEEL AT EASE AND IN HARMONY WITH THEIR BIKE 30

This new Monster is also suitable for out of town use or touring, and if you are really looking for adrenaline, perfectly at ease with sport rides and even on the track. In practice the new model has been designed so that it can be used by any rider in any situation at any time, always putting the rider at ease and in harmony with their bike, whether they are sporting lightweight urban clothing, touring gear or leathers. The Monster’s visual impact is striking, with lines that cause love at first sight, and which are there

not only for aesthetics but also to help improve performance. This is the result of the new design philosophy adopted by Ducati for all its models, but which, for the first time in the case of the new Monster, has been pursued right from the start of the project. This philosophy seeks the creation of sports bikes that are also capable for everyday riding; are simple, increasingly safe, and still provide a thrill and excite you. In short, bikes that are ultimately and always true Ducatis!

31

THE NEW MONSTER

TIMELESS EMOTIONS There are emotions that time cannot diminish and, certainly for all enthusiasts, the Monster has been a full-on emotional experience right from the presentation of the first 900cc model in the autumn of 1992. On sale from spring of the following year, it represented the birth and start of a new category of bike, which had never existed before and was a great success. This category is that of the “nakeds”, of which the Monster has been the symbol and reference point for over 20 years (and still is today). With its exclusive and stark styling available in endless versions and with a range of engines, it made its debut with a liquid cooled 4-valve per cylinder engine in 2001 with the S4

32

version, which borrowed its engine from the celebrated Superbikes in the 916 range. In 2008 a completely new second-generation model arrived (still available today), which is manufactured in the air–cooled 696 and 796 cc versions. Over these decades the Monster has changed radically ‘under the hood’, to the extent that in the versions currently on sale there is not even one screw remaining from those previous versions, while the general ride quality, performance and characteristics have taken giant strides. But the one thing that has not changed is the emotion: just one look is enough and your heart starts to thump, it is still the Monster!

DESIGN STORY

INTERVIEW WITH ANDREA FERRARESI The question that everyone always asks: how does a new bike come into being? How do you go from the initial drawings to the final model? What are the steps which lead to the definition of the overall style and the details? Andrea Ferraresi, Head of the Ducati Design Center, tells us how they work in Borgo Panigale. Question: when we think of a creative process, we imagine the designer as the freest man in the world, a sheet of paper in hand, a pencil and lots of ideas. In reality, we too have restrictions, certain limits that must be taken into account and used as a starting point... Answer: Compared to other products, we have a much freer hand. However, we too have some restrictions. The main ones for a designer are that on a bike everything is in plain sight, you can’t hide anything, that everything is there in order to work well and, on a Ducati, everything must be lightweight. That is quite a challenge, but in some ways it is also one of the most fascinating aspects of our work. The most intriguing challenge: you can deal with everything.

THE GREAT THING ABOUT OUR WORK IS THAT WITH A BIKE EVERYTHING IS VISIBLE. NOTHING CAN BE HIDDEN. SO WE MUST STYLIZE EVEN THE SMALLEST DETAIL.

36

We say that designers go just as far as engineers let them. A.: In reality the bike really is designed together with the technical staff, I can guarantee you that as an engineer. It might be difficult to believe, but even the first sketches, jotted down here and there, are the result of a lot of pre-study agreed between the designer and the engineer. The most important thing is to decide, given equally effective technical solutions, which is the most convincing in terms of style. In other words: we are not looking for a compromise between opposing needs, we are looking for the solution which satisfies both. And size? How does that complicate the search for style? A.: Designing small, compact, aggressive and attractive bikes is a challenge but is relatively “easy” (if I can put it like that). What is more complicated is ensuring the products have Ducati DNA as well as offering comfort and ease of daily use as key selling points. The new Monster 1200 is a very successful experiment in this sense.

Above, Andrea Ferraresi (Head of Ducati Design Center), Gianandrea Fabbro (Chief Designer), and the model of the Ducati 1199 Panigale. Right, the skilled hands of an artisan working a clay model of the tank.

37

DESIGN STORY

Can we summarise the stages in the creation and birth of a Ducati? A.: The starting-point is what we call the ‘Product Mini Brief’, which sets out a design brief and from here the creative process can begin. Starting from a rough layout in which there are few basic parameters (axle spacing, seat height, handlebar position, etc.), we start a kind of competition among the team’s designers – usually three of them – to end up with three draft proposals. We choose two of them and from these, after moving onto the virtual stage, we mill two models on a 1:1 scale. They are to all effects and purposes 3D sketches. On the basis of these, we make the final choice of the most convincing proposal. There is also competition in design… A.: Yes, the “winning” proposal is virtually remodelled and milled, again on a 1:1 scale, in clay. The manual modelling, which is done with the help of highly qualified professionals – real sculptors – is the most important stage for a designer, since it is that of creating the surfaces. Here, more than in other stages in the process, there is physical contact with the bike that is being created. At the end of this stage, and after formal approval of the style, we then reverse engineer the model and there are two other approval stages: one “technical”, in the Design Center in front of the Master Model, and a final one before the company management, with the Clinic Model.

38

And it no longer has that brownish look like plasticine? A.: No, it must look like a real bike. So the Master Model is painted in the colours which have been chosen previously, in order to achieve the most realistic result possible. Some elements may already exist, if they are available or used on other bikes. For example the engine, suspension, wheels. Then it’s the turn of the technical office? A.: Absolutely not! If the technical office only got started now that would be a major problem! Remember what I said earlier: the interaction between the Design Center and the Technical Office starts right from the earliest conceptual stages. The Master Model already represents the engineered version of the product. There would be no point with us all being happy with the style aspects if the bike then cannot be manufactured and does not guarantee the necessary performance, in the sense of global performance. Returning to the process, if the “key players” are convinced, we finally move on to the refinement stage, in which we make the choice of materials, colours, and surface treatments. And for you the work starts again…. A.: In reality we work on parallel projects, some are just getting off the ground, others are at the midway point, and others are coming to an end. You never have time to catch your breath and take a break. That’s life I guess, it’s certainly ours.

DUCATI PANIGALE “BEST OF THE BEST” IN THE 2013 PRODUCT DESIGN CATEGORY On 1 July in Essen, Germany, the 1199 Panigale S, an icon of style, innovation and technology among Ducati Superbikes, obtained the title of “best of the best” according to the expert eyes of the 37 jury members of the Red Dot Award, one of the biggest and most prestigious international design competitions. The Panigale was chosen out of 4,662 products nominated for the 2013 edition. A well deserved prize, thanks to the creativity and innovation of the project and the strong emotional impact that the Panigale had on the jury. For the whole of next year the 1199 Panigale S will be on display at the Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore.

HYPERSTRADA

A NEW RIDING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL THOSE WHO LOVE TWISTS AND TURNS, EVEN WHEN FAR FROM HOME

The sound of the engine is heavenly, conjuring the sensation of speed. The Hyperstrada uses the new 821 cc 4-valve liquid-cooled 11° Testastretta, which supplies maximum power of 110 hp.

T

ake a very agile devourer of turns like the Hypermotard, an extreme bike that combines the agility, precision and lightness of a Supermotard with the refined features of an L-twin powered Ducati. Then add a series of touring extras, such as a windscreen, side panniers to guarantee high carrying capacity, more relaxed ergonomics, and safety guaranteed by ABS and DTC (combined in the Ducati Safety Pack with three available Riding Modes: Sport, Touring, and Urban). The Hyperstrada was created out of this mixture and opens up a new and fascinating horizon, offering a new riding experience for all those whole love taking on the twists and turns, even when they are far from home. The Hyperstrada is therefore a unique and innovative bike, which represents a kind of crossover between the worlds of Motard and Touring. Moreover, this new model is offered with a latest generation design, to provide a bike with a breathtaking look designed to maximise your enjoyment. To this end, the original dirt bike inspired look has been made even more daring, thanks to increased clearance as well as a high and sleek rear and narrow sides. While keeping the hand guards that are typical of off-road models, the new Hyperstrada offers redesigned rear-view mirrors that integrate perfectly with its clean design and are more functional during everyday city use. Great attention has also been paid to the flow of the lines, in order to maintain an essential and minimalist look despite the complexity of adopting the new Testastretta engine.

42

43

HYPERSTRADA

SAFETY IS GUARANTEED BY ABS AND DTC, COMBINED IN THE DUCATI SAFETY PACK WITH THREE AVAILABLE RIDING MODES: SPORT, TOURING AND URBAN

In fact for the Hyperstrada, the 2-valve configuration and air-cooling have been abandoned for the engine, in order to adopt a new 4-valve per cylinder liquid-cooled system, characterised by a racing cylinder bore of 88 mm x 67.5 mm and designed to obtain a perfect balance between use and performance: it is the new 821 cc 11° Testastretta engine which supplies maximum power of 110 hp @ 9,250 rpm and torque of 89 Nm @ 7,500 rpm. The new 11° Testastretta adopts the most advanced technical solutions, the result of Ducati’s engineering know-how, solutions which have led to the creation of an extremely high performance engine that is also fluid and regular and can be enjoyed in all conditions, and that can, among other things, greatly limit the emissions of unburnt hydrocarbons. As a result, the new Hyperstrada range stands out in terms of its proportions, ergonomics and practicality, as well as for the application of the latest Ducati technology. And so, if the Hypermotard and Hypermotard SP versions faithfully recreate a Supermotard’s sprit and bare appearance, the Hyperstrada model seems less extreme, with specific characteristics which make it fit for more varied use, including touring.

THE POWER OF

DIAVEL CARBON PHOTO BY DANIELE TESTA

Highly charged and focused on its goal: this is the impression that the Diavel Carbon gives when stationary. Ready and waiting to unleash its full potential.

50

T

he night in its deafening silence envelops the city. Boulevards and buildings are as if covered by a black veil. Somewhere, a rider prepares to take to the streets. His is not just any mount; it is the Diavel Carbon, a powerful and elegant beast whose dominant nature is apparent simply from its appearance. Wide “shoulders,” broadened by the lateral radiators, narrow to a tapered waist that draws the eye to the engine at its heart. Together with a bright red trellis frame

and lightweight forged Marchesini wheels, this unmistakably communicates the performance within. The imposing and dynamic rear tyre encourages lean angles of up to 41 degrees, while a substantial headlight illuminates even the darkest night. Uniquely for a Ducati, the overall look is not one derived from competition but rather is solely to arouse the desire of riders who demand power and sophistication, together with brutal street style.

The night accentuates the details. Above, from left, Dark Armour jacket, Dark Rider helmet, Company leather pants and Sport boots.

51

A flick of a switch, a push of a button, and the night comes alive: the 1198cc, 162 hp Testastretta 11° engine lets loose a deep, aggressive rumble.

If he desires the next level of performance, the Touring mode gives the bike its full 162 hp, but with a softened power delivery that still keeps something in reserve.

The Diavel Carbon manages its power with 3 different Riding Mode maps, making it as tame or fierce as the rider desires. Urban mode is the most reserved, with 100 hp controlled by DTC (Ducati Traction Control) on level 5, the highest setting. This is the mode used when a rider wants the Diavel at its most tame, for instance when the pavement is wet.

And for the fierce unadulterated Diavel experience, there is Sport mode, which unleashes all its performance in the most aggressive way - creating scorching acceleration and a sense of inexhaustible power so addicting that when the dawn finally breaks, the only desire will be for the next night to fall.

D

own to the last bolt, it is an authentic Ducati superbike: beautiful and aggressive, with inimitable style, incredible performance, and stateof-the-art technology. The 899’s unique engine size is perfect to create a broadly capable motorcycle that offers dominant performance whether at the track or on the road. In fact, the new 898cc Superquadro engine designed specifically for this model - offers a blend of power and flexibility unmatched by anything else. Thanks to this, the 899 Panigale offers riders of a broader range the ability to enjoy the same appeal of its older sister, the benchmark superbike 1199

56

Panigale (which pioneered the brilliant technological innovation and style of the 899, and is the next step for riders who are ready for something even more thrilling). It was in order to achieve this sophisticated objective - broadening the range of use of bikes whose DNA is clearly sporty - that this completely new “Supermid” version has been introduced, using the advanced technology that has always characterised Ducati bikes. Following this direction, the 899’s technology and innovation makes it safer and more versatile, while continuing to provide the adrenalin rush and soulstirring feeling that mark it as one of the true “Reds of Borgo Panigale.”

57

899 PANIGALE

THE BIKE’S LINES LEAVE NO DOUBTS ABOUT ITS DUCATI DNA

The heart of the 899 Panigale is its brand-new 898cc Superquadro engine, which features a bore and stroke ideal for producing an optimal distribution of power, and makes 148 hp (109 kW) with 10.1 kg-m of torque. This engine gives the bike an extremely fluid acceleration, and is also a structural element of the innovative monocoque frame that enables enhanced speed and agility due to its light weight of just 169 kg (dry). The unmistakable lines, shared with the 1199 Panigale, leave no doubt about the family DNA. Cutting-edge technology is obvious in the 899’s electronics package, which includes Riding Modes, Ride-by-Wire, 3-level ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Engine Braking Control (EBC), and the Ducati Quick Shift.

DOVIZIOSO WE WERE AT THE SAN MARINO GRAND PRIX TO SPEND A DAY AT THE TRACK WITH THE DUCATI MOTOGP RIDER FROM FORLÌ PHOTO BY MILAGRO

With eighteen races in twelve countries on four continents, it’s clear that participating in the MotoGP championship is a travel-intensive job. Still, no matter how far-flung a particular round may be to some, it’s intimately familiar to someone else, and for Andrea Dovizioso, you can’t get more homey than Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. Less than an hour from Andrea’s birthplace of Forlimpopoli, the track is where he took part in his first race aboard a full-size motorcycle. Since then, Dovizioso has raced there in the Italian championship and—since 2008—in MotoGP, for the GP di San Marino e Riviera di Rimini. “Misano is certainly my home track, as it’s close to my house,” Andrea says. “Honestly, I haven’t raced there as much as you might think, but my best memory of it is when I won my first race on a full-size 125 there when I was 14.” For 2013, Misano was even more significant for Dovizioso due to his having signed with the Ducati Team. The factory squad counts the circuit among its three official test tracks (the others being Mugello and Jerez). The circuit is also host to World Ducati Week, and as such, is a semi-annual destination for Ducatisti from all over the world. Despite his full agenda at Misano, Andrea was kind enough to let us tag along with him for a first-hand experience of a very special race weekend. After all, there’s no place like home.

11:30

LUNCH

Usually at this time I have already racked up a fair few kms on the track. Finally it’s time for lunch, which I have no option but to eat in the break between the morning session and the afternoon one. Just a few simple things, which I need to recharge my batteries: a bit of ham, pasta, fruit juice and a banana.

60

13:00

TRAINING

Before going out onto the track, every rider spends 10-15 minutes warming up his body. This is essential to avoid any painful and unpleasant muscle problems: riding a bike means using muscles that it’s hard to train, which must be well warmed up before you get on the bike.

61

13:3o GETTING DRESSED

I don’t spend much time getting dressed: normally I get my leathers on in a minute or two. But I am much more careful with the knee sliders. I put new ones on for each session, so that they are always the same height and therefore feel the same on my knees. Unfortunately you pretty much need a screwdriver to get them off: the velcro seems almost glued together!

14:30

PIT-STOP

16:00

INTERVIEWS

The garage is my real office! During the breaks I keep my helmet on, so I’m always ready to go out again. First of all I talk to the technicians: here you see me in a meeting with my chief mechanic, track engineer and suspension engineer, from Öhlins. The track map helps to identify the turns, marked with a number. For example, if I say I have a problem at turn 3, they can go and look at the telemetry to understand what’s not right. Then, before going back out, I also make a pit stop in the toilet: that’s why I only take off my gloves!

After the two sessions on the bike, at the end of the day, there are interviews: we tell reporters how the day went and what we intend to improve. Then it’s the television stations’ turn. Normally, we have one meeting a day.

17:00

SPONSOR

“FOR EACH SESSION I PUT ON NEW KNEE SLIDERS, SO THEY ARE ALWAYS THE SAME HEIGHT AND THEREFORE FEEL THE SAME ON MY KNEES”

Every race weekend there are supplementary events, organised by our sponsors, like the one organised by Shell. Usually this is one of the best moments for you fans, because we riders answer your questions, sign autographs, let you take photos... Unfortunately our sports commitments take up a lot of time and we can’t stay to chat with you for long. It’s a real shame!

Vittoriano Guareschi (Team Manager). Although he has a professional role, “Vitto” is always close by and we have an excellent relationship. Also because, having been a rider in the past, he always has the right advice. So much so that they often ask him a lot of questions too!

18:00

19:00

FANS

In the VIP Village, I usually answer questions from fans together with Julian Thomas (Press Manager) and

62

PHYSIOTHERAPY

This is the time I devote to my physiotherapist, Francesco. I’ve known him since 2002: he was

working in the Clinica Mobile and I was just starting out on my adventure in MotoGP. Usually he gives me a quick warm-up massage in the morning (before the riding session) and then one to warm down in the evening, to relax the muscles. Not all the riders have somebody in this role in their team but in MotoGP it’s very important. And then I’m even luckier because Francesco, as well as being very good at his job, is also a friend and he helps me a lot throughout the race weekend.

ucati is the ultimate scene-stealer: on the road each day, on the track each weekend and even more so on the big screen. A triumph of excitement unleashed—pure passion and speed—it cannot be caught but is always at the center of attention. The list of Hollywood appearances for the bikes of Borgo Panigale continues to grow. Since the 1960s the number of Ducati motorcycles in Hollywood films has continued to increase. It seems that cinema cannot ignore the fatal attraction that surrounds every Ducati, whether it is a sportsbike or naked, modern and technological or classic and retro. All are primordial and able to play the part of a real bike better than any other two-wheeler. Pure, wild, free, Ducati is the maximum expression of motorcycling even on the big screen, where, more than anywhere else, character and style are fundamental. From the Scramblers of Italian cinema of the 60s and 70s to the superbikes of Armageddon, Cat Woman, Taxxi, Blade, Matrix and more. And don’t forget about the Diavel in the latest Wolverine or the cartoon Ducati in the Simpsons.

Ducati’s official museum celebrates the racing heritage that’s driven the company for more than half a century. In Museo Ducati, Chris Jonnum and Peter Harholdt profile the greatest motorcycles displayed there. The tour begins with a 1947 Cucciolo motorized bicycle and ends with the 2010 Desmosedici GP10 ridden by 2006 MotoGP champion Nicky Hayden. Other highlights include the 900 Super Sport prepared for Mike Hailwood’s 1978 win at the Isle of Man TT, and the 1990 851 that Raymond Roche rode to Ducati’s first World Superbike championship. The bikes are shown in stunning detail through photographs that reveal their overall design as well as details of engines and other components. And the vivid text explains each model’s technical features along with its performance on the track.

This book is presented in both English and Italian throughout.

Riding the country continent of Australia on one of the best motorcycles in the world is something which dreams are made of. Doing it the second time around on two wheels, especially when it is a Ducati, makes it even more special. Here is the proof that dreams can come true, twice over! The Grand Australian Roadtrip saw me ride 23.456 km in 45 riding days resulting in an abundance of photos, videos, insane distances and once (oops, twice!) in a lifetime experience. I was back home again. On the saddle of a Ducati Multistrada. All my important worldly possessions on one single motorcycle, ready to take on almost 24.000 km of tarmac and off road. This was it. Previous to this I had done Japan (8.000 km: www.theGreatJapanRoadtrip. com) and the most important ride of my life (covered in Ducati Redline Magazine 2013) – Mission: Red Planet, the ride from Dubai to Italy for World Ducati Week (www. missionRedPla.net), both on Multistradas.

136

The ride started from Sydney on 22nd April 2013 with me going in an anti-clockwise direction. The planned route was Sydney – Brisbane – Rockhampton – Mt.Isa – Alice Springs – Uluru – Darwin – Perth – Augusta – Norseman – Adelaide – Kangaroo Island – The Great Ocean Road – Melbourne – Tasmania – Canberra – Sydney. The aim of this ride was to stretch my limits in covering distances and producing high quality photos and videos and doing maximum possible updates right from the road. It was the perfect convergence of man, machine and technology tied with the red passion that Ducati exudes and inspires in all those who own or aspire to own one. I was taking a lot of camera equipment as well. For me the Multistrada is one of the perfect bikes to do this. I had also a Strada Performance tank bag and a rear tail bag installed in which I had kept all my camera equipment.

April is the onset of winters in Australia, so it was a good time to do the ride. However in June monsoon hits the continent and it starts to rain, especially from the west to east. The first 13.000 km or so were almost devoid of any rain, however the remaining ~10.000 km were in torrential rain dotted with beautiful days of sunshine and blue skies. Australia is a developed country with an excellent road network and sparse traffic, this makes motorcycling a pure delight. However this can also be a negative if you run into problems on super isolated stretches of the Northern Territory and Western Australia. As with all big cities, Sydney is overcrowded and I heaved a sigh of relief leaving it and heading north. Toward Brisbane the weather started getting warmer and I had to shed the liner off from my Ducati Rev-It! Strada suit.

137

Top: A day’s ride with a Diavel in the middle of Australia. Below: Kangaroo Island.

Australia is a big country. A very big country. It is, though, pleasantly surprising that it doesn’t have too many states, in fact just five to be precise. I started from Sydney, which is in New South Wales (NSW) and entered into my second one – Queensland, which is also called the Sunshine State. Airlie Beach is a beautiful place on the coast to stay overnight. This was the last town before things started to get really isolated and far apart. A board which I saw on the highway summed it up appropriately – “It is still a long way to go kids!” A series of boards installed several kilometers apart presented trivia to drivers to help them stay awake. However this was far from the real deal, the Northern Territory and Western Australia, where staying awake is the most difficult part of the ride. Central Australia or Centralia is one of the main reasons why I wanted to ride pan-Australia again. This is a magical place, unlike anything else on the planet. The supervast empty landscape and the butter smooth highways are practically empty and setup just for you. In many stretches you won’t encounter even a single red light for hundreds of kilometers. Give yourself some time, stand in the middle of the highway and close your eyes. I did this for a good couple of minutes without worrying anyone would run me over – it was a

138

divine feeling. Lots of people have the idea that there is ‘nothing’ in the Australian outback, however this could not be further from the truth. It would take a lot of brainpower to list other places on Earth where you can engage cruise control for hundreds of kilometers without stopping, and also go off road on trails into some of the most beautiful places you can imagine, as and when you wish. Centralia has a huge network of trails crisscrossed by beautiful tarmac to cater to any kind of motorcyclist. As I circumnavigated the continent and went to its red center, I started treasuring the freedom imparted by a motorcycle. Wherever I went I was greeted by passionate Ducatisti who made me feel like a family member. They rode with me, guided me, took me out to show off their cities, and shared their experiences over coffee. After starting from Sydney and going to the center of Australia (Uluru), then touching the northern tip of Australia at Darwin and then (phew!) doing the never ending western coast of the country, and then doing the great Nullarbor plains in South Australia I entered back into civilization. I was actually feeling sad leaving the sense of isolation behind.

TOP EXPERIENCES Watching the sunset at the center of Australia at Uluru, it was a spiritual experience Sitting in the middle of the highway at night, in outback Australia, under a moonlit sky full of stars Meeting with a lone cyclist in the middle of nowhere on a highway in Northern Territory Each time I started off from a stop, 0-100 km/h was so exciting on the Multistrada!

DOING 1.750 KM IN 16.5 HOURS FROM ALICE SPRINGS TO DARWIN VIA KAKADU NATIONAL PARK. THE BIKE MADE IT SUPER EASY AND COMFORTABLE! The Great Ocean Road is perhaps one of the most famous roads in the world purpose-built for touring. Even though it is heavily publicized and known it still remains relatively devoid of too much traffic on weekdays. The road has lush green forests, spectacular cliffs, amazing rock formations and coastal scenery. Approximately 245 km long, it stretches between the Victorian towns of Torquay and Warnambool. In fact this road is the world’s largest war memorial, dedicated to the casualties of World War I. Unlike some overhyped places around the world, this road actually is great to ride on at least once, if you are in Australia. Just try and pick a weekday with blue skies. Surprisingly you can find some isolated beaches even on this road if you are ready to trek a little bit. Mission Complete: From the time we are born to our death - everything is measured in numbers. These ten digits represent everything in this universe continuum.

140

And sometimes, when the stars align, you come across a magical constellation of numbers which is otherwise a rare, probably once in a lifetime occurrence and needs meticulous planning, dedication and will to make possible, let alone to replicate. As a motorcyclist I have been fortunate to create mileby-mile one of these very special nexuses of numbers, while surging forward with my bike as a single entity both physically and mentally. Each mile covered has taught me something, given me quality meditation time, allowed me to listen to the pitterpatter of the rain over my helmet, introduced me to people who might be my friends for life, taken me to sights no other medium could, given my lens views I could capture nowhere else and last but not least, tangibly defined this roadtrip - a special sequence of events, numbers and ‘planned serendipity’. 23.456 km done on The Grand Australian Roadtrip!

WPM WORLD PRESIDENT MEETING

ONE BIG FAMILY THE WORLD PRESIDENTS MEETING IS AN UNFORGETTABLE MOTORCYCLING EXPERIENCE. THE TWISTING ROADS, THE COUNTRYSIDE, THE PLACES, THE PEOPLE, THE FOOD AND THE HOSPITALITY ARE THE SPECIAL INGREDIENTS IN THIS MIX OF EMOTIONS. AN EXPERIENCE THAT DUCATI RESERVES FOR THE “HEADS” OF ITS DOCS, THE WORLDWIDE DESMO OWNERS CLUBS. BECAUSE THEY ARE THE ENGINE THAT FUELS DUCATI PASSION…

144

I

t only happens once a year, but what an experience! We’re talking about the international meeting of the Desmo Owners Club Presidents. Men and women, young and less so, who come together from all over the world to share their unconditional love for Ducati. The World Presidents Meeting is a special and unique moment, organized by Ducati and reserved solely for the presidents of its official Clubs. “This is a concrete and tangible way in which to say thanks to those who spend all year, in every

corner of the planet, striving to share his or her Ducati passion, with enthusiasm and without any economic return” says Diego Sgorbati, Ducati’s Marketing Manager. “There are 166 DOCs across the world and the same number of presidents invited to this annual event that almost always takes place in Italy, Ducati’s homeland.” In 2013 the presidents’ “voyage” took place from September 14-22 in Sicily, with Catania as its starting point.

145

WORLD PRESIDENT’S MEETING

Over the following days our heroes travelled together all over Sicily: Modica, Caltagirone, Palermo, Bosco della Ficuzza, Monreale, Piana degli Albanesi, Enna, Trapani, Segesta and more, eventually reaching the legendary locations of the Targa Florio and the slopes of Etna. Often with the help, companionship and extraordinary welcome provided by the members of Desmo Owners Clubs in Catania, Palermo and other areas of Sicily. Over 2000 km of passion and friendship, but above all Ducati! This year the company offered its presidents the chance to enjoy Sicily’s roads on the brand new Hyperstrada; a great way for the company to thank the participants but also the most authentic way to test Borgo Panigale’s new sports bike, whose mix of sports riding and levels of comfort has surprised one and all. The WPM is an amazing and unforgettable experience that provides all of the presidents—and consequently the 20,000+ members of the 166 clubs across the globe—the opportunity to experience the Ducati world in a totally unique way. Each of the presidents has an active role in Ducati’s success. By participating in the WPM they can share their experiences with the other presidents and with Ducati. The travelling time affords ample opportunity—especially during lunch breaks and in the evenings over dinner—to get to know each other, spend time together and share their views about the company, products and Ducati’s history. The next annual WPM will be in 2014 and will coincide with World Ducati Week, during which Ducati will again provide its invited presidents with a test bike. Combining the event with World Ducati Week will make for an even richer and more exciting program, with events, rides and shows of every kind, all of which will make a lasting impression. It is yet another chance to enjoy yourselves all together in the name of Ducati passion.

A Monster in the Himalayas

Sumit Pannalall, a 32 year old Indian Ducatista from Bangalore, travelled with his wife on a Monster 796 across the Himalayan region of Ladakh. His was the first bike to have travelled along the Khardung La, one of the highest roads in the world that can be travelled by bike, at 5569 m. “The captivating beauty of the Indian Himalayan region of Leh, Ladakh is crude and pure. “It was an extreme adventure, with summits above 5000 metres and with an average altitude of 3000 metres, and I experienced it with one of the fans’ most wanted road bikes. I would like to offer my sincere congratulations to Ducati for having created such a beautiful bike that is also able to deal with the world’s most difficult weather and road conditions. Wherever we went, everyone looked at the bike with a sort of reverential fear: a Ducati is always able to amaze. It was a fantastic journey.”

DUCATI HISTORY

Post-war Italy and the Cucciolo As a result of bombings, the Borgo Panigale factory was razed to the ground in 1944. The Ducati brothers didn’t give up, however. In the years to follow, the Cucciolo was designed, and presented in 1946 at the Milan trade show. Sold initially in a box for assembly, it became the world’s most famous auxiliary engine for bicycles. It would soon have a real frame and would become Ducati’s first real motorcycle.

or those who love to live life on the road, all the ingredients are here: The bikes, the streets, the food, and the inimitable flavor of the Romagna region. But the riders are the real stars of this journey to discover the values and passions that characterize Rimini, its products, and its people. Given the seal of approval by Rolling Stone magazine, and shared through Instagram, Rimini Street Food exemplifies this area’s passion for engines, the flaming red of Ducati, and its dedication to street food. Through the discovery of some utterly fascinating places that are “off the beaten path” and best visited by motorcycle, the journey highlights the genuineness and culture of the region’s people, their traditions, and their food. This unusual project’s creativity gives Ducati fans the chance to discover places otherwise overlooked. Mustsee places like the food stalls dotting the landscape between the hills of Romagna and the sea. Must-see places to taste real “Piada” as well as other local delights such as cassoni alle herbe (unleavened bread with herbs), fish skewers, hamburgers, and Americanstyle hot dogs. This gastronomic journey will not only fill your stomach, but these highlights of Made-in-Italy roadside cuisine will fill your soul, as well.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE DUCATI THAT WINS IN PRODUCTION SERIES COMPETITION

THE 1199 PANIGALE R TRIUMPHS ON THE TRACK IN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS OF ITALY, SPAIN AND GERMANY; RESPECTIVELY WITH NEWLY CROWNED ITALIAN SUPERBIKE CHAMPION EDDY LA MARRA, SPANISH EXTREME STAR/EUROPEAN SUPERSTOCK CHAMPION XAVIER FORES, AND WINNING GERMAN SUPERBIKE RIDER MARTIN BAUER 160

IN ITALY WITH EDDY LA MARRA IN THE SUPERBIKE Eddy La Marra and the Ducati 1199 Panigale R were crowned Italian Superbike champions thanks to six straight wins out a total of 10 races, the last two of which he did not compete in due to a serious injury. Thanks to a long series of positive results which started in Vallelunga last May and continued until 28 July, the date of his last race at Imola, La Marra became Italian Superbike champion, the most important category in the CIV, the Italian speed championships, despite

being unable to be on track to celebrate. The Lazio born rider, representing the Barni Racing team on his 1199 Panigale R, earned 182 points over 8 rounds, opening up a 48-point gap over his nearest challenger, the Argentine rider Leandro Mercado who could not make up the difference even in the last two races in which La Marra did not compete. We send him and his team all our best wishes for a quick return to winning ways on the national and international Superbike scene.

161

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

IN GERMANY IN THE SUPERBIKE CATEGORY WITH MARTIN BAUER In 2013 the Ducati 1199 Panigale R also made its debut in the German Superbike championship, which in recent times has always been dominated by German rivals in the category. The 1199 Panigale R managed by the 3C-Racing team was initially entrusted to the Italo-German rider Dario Giuseppetti, who was then replaced during tests by the experienced Martin Bauer. The Panigale’s German adventure immediately bore fruit: after some encouraging tests, it debuted at the Sachsenring on 7 and 8 September, when Martin Bauer, in his first appearance on the Ducati bike, literally dominated both races.

IN SPAIN WITH XAVIER FORÉS IN THE EXTREME CATEGORY AND IN THE EUROPEAN SUPERSTOCK

The Ducati 1199 Panigale R also reigns in Spain. The top championship for modified production in Spain is called Formula Extreme and is part of the prestigious Spanish CEV, a championship full of talented and world famous riders across all categories. And from this year there is an Italian wind blowing through the

162

CEV too, seeing that the Ducati bikes are currently leading the field in the Formula Extreme table with rider Xavier Forés on the Ducati 1199 Panigale R managed by the Pompone team. Xavier Forés and his Panigale R have also just won the prestigious European Superstock 1000 title that was at stake in the single race

on the Albacete circuit in Spain on 6 October. The chase for the Extreme title is, however, still open, though there are good reasons to believe in a final victory. Moreover, Xavier Forés, with his 1199 Panigale R, debuted on 20 October in World Superbikes, participating in the final round of the championship in Jerez.
