12Abstract (Purpose, method, results, conclusions)
The purpose of the 1981 to 1983 roonitoring program at the Barbers Point Outfall on oahu, is two-fold: to describe the benthic ccmnunity by utilizing micromollusks as index species and to establish a data base for continuing ccmnunity analysis. 'Ibis report should be regarded as an initial step in an ongoing monitoring program. The conclusions as of the end of 1983 are as follows: 1. Analysis of the data indicates a consistent pattern of benthic ccmnunity structure in the area of the Barbers Point Outfall at Honouliuli, Oahu. Shifts in the distribution pattern of the assemblages are interpreted as due to natural variability in the system. 2. A comprehensive, systematic, computerized data base has been established for micramollusk data in SAS at the University of Hawaii Canputing Center. The data base contains all micranollusk data collected at Barbers Point and Mamala Bay between 1973 and April 1983 (data fran Sept., OCt., and Nov. 1983 are currently being entered in the data base). Included in the data base are values for physicochemical characteristics of the samples. 3. The current sampling program appears to be adequate at this time and should be continued in its present form through 1984.

shown in Figures 2 to 4, and relevant statistics in Tables 1 and 2. The IOOre distinctive of the two assenb1ages is the infauna1 asserrb1age (Table
1),
distinguished by the consistent presence of the dialid Finella
WWides (found in 72% of the samples) and the relatively high proPortions of the echinoderm p:lrasite Ba1cis and infauna1 IOO11usks, such as the gastro-
pods caecum and Natica and te11inid bivalves. These three groups of mollusks canprise about 25% of each of the samples. The assent>lage is strongly associated with beds of the large bivalve Pinna, evidence for which in the form of shell fragments or larval shells was found in IOOre than 70% of. the samples. The dialid assent>lage is so-called because of the consistent presence of four species of dialids which canprise an average of about 45% of the TABLE 1.

tThree quarterly samples. Four species of Rissoidae make up from 13 to 20% of
the assemblage, while.shells of Finella are virtually absent and there are very low proportions of Balcis and infaunal m:>llusks in the samples. In the 1981 and 1983 sampling grids, the two assent>lages are clearly demarcated (Fig. 5):
in 1981 the deepest stations CA stas.) and stations Cl
to C3 at depths of 34.4 to 45.7
In
(113-150 ft) were characterized by the
dialid assemblage and all of the 0 stations, stations C4 and CS, and the B stations were characterized by the infauna! assemblage.
The samples from
the four control stations oonsisted of the dialid assent>lage.
The F8ttern
was repeated in the samples obtained. in the three quarterly postdischarge sampling programs in 1983 and in the annual sampling in 1983 (Fig. 5), with the exception that in the annual 1983 sampling in November the 0 stations were of the dialid type and the A stations were infaunal.

10 Abundance and Species Diversity A catalogue of abundance, species diversity, and depth is provided in A~dix
A. Abundance ranges from 5.3 to 45.5 shells/an 3 , with a mean of about 21 shells/an 3 ; number of species ranges from 15 to 34 and species
diversity (H') from 1.8 to 3.3.
In the 1981 samples abundance increases
P
=
= 7.27
+ 0.0098X, 0), with mean abundance at the 61 m (200 ft) depth incranent, where the
significantly with depth (the regression equation is y
diffuser lies, about 21 shells/em 3 , and that at the 91.4 m (300 ft) depth level about 31 shells/em 3 • increase with depth
NlI'IIber of species and species diversity also
(for number of species the regression equation is
y = 16.63 + 0.0465, P = 0; for species diversity the regression equation is Y
= 2.05
+ 0.0012X, P
= 0.15).
The same two assemblages were found in about the same proportions in
the
pr~
and postdischarge samples, and no significant differences are pr~
evident in abundance or species richness between
and postdischarge
samples (Table 2). Analysis of the assenblages from samples at station 19 are shOtm in Table 3.
(Sta. 1 was sampled only in sept. 1983 and is not compared.)
station 19 is upstream of the Sand Island diffuser at a depth of about 91.4 m and was sampled in 1979 and 1981 prior to the saJlI)ling program described here. The four samples from the Sand Island sampling program were all of the infaunal type and abundance averaged about 36 shells/an 3 • In 1983 abundance was 27 shells/em 3 • TABLE 3.

Because of the variable nature of
the system, it is suggested that the present sampling program and the grid of 20 stations around the outfall be maintained through at least one additional sampling cycle, that is, through 1984.
