Ice Cool Integration from Progressive Home Automation Residential Installation Location: Calgary, Canada When it gets down to -25C as it does in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where Progressive Home Automation hails from, the only kind of chilling you’re interested in doing is curling up in front of your favorite flick with perhaps an equally frosty brew in hand. Progressive Home Automation asked WyreStorm to put the AV ice(ing) on the cake of a show home project so hot you need gloves to handle it with multi-room HDBaseT matrix distribution and a control solution that’s as cool as a Tarantino one-liner.
Our goal was to create a stylish show home that featured every type of automation we specialize in to showcase what is possible in terms of residential AV, lighting, security, communication and energy management, and to demonstrate how effectively these systems can be integrated to offer the very best in modern living.
Located in the trendy Kensington area of the Calgary, this newly built show-home provided the perfect blank canvas for Progressive Home Automation to create a leading-edge whole-house integrated and distributed; audio-visual, lighting, and security system for this high tech modern living space which is as stylish as the architecture and décor. The project itself featured 15 discrete zones of audio and 6 multi-room visual set-ups, including living room, dedicated home theatre, master and guest bedrooms, loft space and a full gym, with Progressive Home Automation designing the show home environment to create the best end user experience possible.

This was achieved by their careful selection of manufacturers and brands they knew would exceed their overall expectations. Reliability and flexibility were important considerations, as was the capability to seamlessly integrate with all devices within the project to offer true ‘Home Automation’. This allowed the property to interact with the end user and vice versa in a way that went beyond
The central rack area itself featured a 36U Sanus rack, populated by a Panamax networked power system, managing power requirements throughout the property. In terms of AV, two Shaw Motorola Digital Cable boxes, Samsung Blu-ray, Apple TV 3 and a Fusion Research Ovation media streamer acted as the central hub for the property’s entertainment.
With a Vantage centralized lighting system selected to show-off just what whole home automation is capable of with 90 lighting loads and 30 lighting keypads, Lutron control with wireless temperature sensors were chosen to manage heating and AC requirements. Security came in the form of automated blinds and Schlage z-wave locks backed up by a DSC Power Series security system and an Hikvision IP Camera system. All of which were controlled over Elan, using g! touch panels and Apple iPad Air tablets with Launchport in-wall docs running the g! Mobile app.

WYRESTORM CASE STUDY All sources were distributed through a WyreStorm MX0606-PP HDBaseT Class B 6x6 matrix switcher, for transmissions of video and audio, and two-way IR and RS232 up to 70m along a single Cat5e/6 to WyreStorm RX-70-IR-PP HDBaseT display receivers at each of the 6 display zones with the entire AV system controlled via Elan g!.
In terms of display zones, the Living Room and both Master and Guest Bedrooms featured 60” Samsung plasma screens, a larger 75” Samsung for the Loft area and a 55” LG LED display for the Gym, while the showpiece display zone Theatre Room boasted Epson Powerlite projection to a 135” motorized Elite projection screen, with all zones controlled by Elan g! handheld remotes. Of course all that screen in the Theatre Room would be a terrible waste without some serious audio to go with it and Progressive didn’t disappoint with a 7-speaker Sonance system through a Yamaha Aventage amp, with dual 8” inwall Sunfire subwoofers, each with their own independent amplification, delivering the tooth-rattling bass required to bring it all to life.
Ryan Lowe explains the reasoning for choosing WyreStorm as the linchpin in delivering content thought the show home: We needed a reliable and stable solution for the multiroom video and after hearing nothing but great reviews about WyreStorm from other integrators we where excited to see if their name stood up to the test. It certainly did. The WyreStorm system was incredibly easy to install and integrated with the Elan g! system perfectly via the two way driver.
As a modern home automation project designed to illustrate just what is possible with a selection of compatible brands chosen specifically to meet or surpass user expectation, this show home integration was everything we intended and more. Of course, a show home is one thing, but the aim of the project was to create the perfect living environment - an actual, functional home that is as practical a living space as it is demonstration of cutting edge whole-house integration, and the client has been so delighted with the result they have hosted several parties since completion showing off their new Progressive show home.
