MASTER OF SCIENCE IN

TAXATION FROM AMERICAN UNIVERSITY

WHY AN MS IN TAXATION? Jobs, Above Average Salaries, & Rapid Advancement Due to the ever increasing volume of federal and state tax statutes, the expanding and more complicated, even borderline incomprehensible tax regulations, and the aging of current tax professionals, tax expertise is a hot commodity. Studies predict a growing need for well-trained tax professionals into the next decade. More importantly, Big 4, regional, and midsize accounting firms, as well as large corporations can’t find enough candidates for their tax openings.

WHY KOGOD? Top-ranked Program, Local Expertise in the Heart of the Nation’s Capital, and a Challenging and Mentally Stimulating Curriculum Over the past 30 years, American University’s Kogod School of Business has developed an innovative, cutting-edge, Master of Science in Taxation (MST) degree. The program provides students with a unique opportunity to learn from experienced faculty, seasoned corporate and public accounting tax executives, government officials, and major industry players in Washington, D.C. Kogod’s home in the nation’s capital provides MST students with exposure and access to decision makers at the center of political debate on tax policy, reform, and administration, as well as some of the most experienced tax practitioners in the country. MST alumni offer an additional connection for students to jump start their tax careers. Kogod’s location provides a wealth of internship and employment opportunities. Kogod’s tax program is ranked in the top ten percent nationally by Tax Talent. The rigorous curriculum includes study in the core areas of Individual, Partnership, and Corporate Taxation. However, cutting edge specialty areas play a key role, including International Taxation, State and Local Taxation, Tax Policy, and Tax Exempt Organizations.

PROGRAM DELIVERY Most MST classes are taught in the evening, allowing students to take in internships during the day, or even hold part-time or full-time jobs. Several courses are also offered online. Full-time students have the ability to finish the program in one year, while part-time students are encouraged to take a class or two per semester. In addition to the full degree program, Kogod now offers a 12 credit hour Graduate Certificate in Taxation, perfect for professionals seeking advancement or entry into the taxation field.

KOGOD TAX POLICY CENTER Kogod’s nationally recognized faculty lend their expertise to the Kogod Tax Policy Center. The Center promotes independent research on tax policy, planning, and compliance affecting small and mid-sized businesses, entrepreneurs, and middle-income tax payers. Caroline Bruckner, Executive-in-Residence at Kogod, serves as managing director of the Center and brings almost a decade of Capitol Hill experience to this role.
