NEWS
For stories about class actions Bankruptcies Stories on corporate bankruptcies, receiverships and voluntary and involuntary insolvencies. We should also include the code on news on when a company ceases trading, on bankruptcy court rulings and a company’s emergence from a bankruptcy protection or administration process. We should use the code for when a company has actually filed for bankruptcy, been declared insolvent or emerged from bankruptcy, not when a company is just struggling financially. The same rules apply for corporate and personal bankruptcies. When in doubt, mark stories ATTN EDITOR and check with your local legal department. Diaries All financial and general news diaries Derivatives All market reports that routinely mention derivatives (futures; options/warrants and swaps); all new issues of derivatives; news items concerning forecasts and analyses of the derivatives market; news items concerned with the market structure. Emerging markets summaries Fund industry news All news about investment trusts, mutual funds, investment funds and the funds industry and players; funds’ views and forecasts about markets and instruments. Technical analysis Stories about technical analysis of markets. Investing All news about the process of investing on the part of individuals. News about investment tools, techniques and regulations for the individual investor and market trends that are related to individual investors; news about how investors interact with markets, detailing patterns of behaviour of the investors and their aggregate impact on the macro-economy. This could include stories interviewing fund managers about their own process of investigating or about individual investment flows inot and out of the markets. It includes information with advice from the experts about how to invest and helping in the process of making selections between various financial instruments New issues All new government; supranational and corporate issues of debt and corporate issues of equity; all share issues. Top financial and general news
NEWS - Alerts, newsbreaks, updates and wrapups on top financial and general news stories of major international impact. The code is used for hard news that is likely to move markets or to top the financial or political agenda. Stories carrying the NEWS code would be expected to dominate the financial and general headlines of the world’s major newspapers, Web sites, television and radio networks. NEWS stories will typically include: major economic indicators (particularly from G7 countries); interest rate announcements; currency intervention stories; results, forecasts or profit warnings from sector-leading companies; stories on major IPOs, mergers and acquisitions, and bankruptcies; stories on sharp movements in key individual markets (e.g. forex, Treasuries, stocks, gold, oil) or global markets; election results in major countries; conflict, crime or disasters with heavy casualties; scientific breakthroughs. NEWS will not normally include: sidebars; stories of little interest or impact outside a specific market, sector or discipline; routine market reports; research alerts (other than major upgrades/downgrades of sector leaders); hotstocks; analyses; features; Instant Views; diaries; press digests etc. The code should not be used on stories from third-party services, stories aimed only at domestic services or stories in languages other than English. Where possible, the NEWS code should be applied from the very first alert on the story, and successively to the newsbreak(s), update(s) and wrap(s). In cases where the scale of the story and extent of market interest emerge only gradually, the code may be applied at a later stage. Where the significance of the story is immediately obvious — e.g. a major takeover bid, a plane crash or a Fed or ECB rate change — the code should be added at source by the bureau. In borderline cases, desks or news editors will need to make the call. It’s important to make sure we apply this code very selectively. If we swamp the screens with NEWS stories, we will devalue the currency and subscribers will find it just as hard as ever to filter out what really matters. If in doubt, consult newseds. The previous definition of NEWS — all political and general news — will no longer apply. Desks (e.g. World Desk, Americas Desk) which until now have routinely sent all general news stories to NEWS must take care in future to use it strictly according to the new criteria. Only a fraction of our general news stories will carry the code. Stories carrying the NEWS code will feed TOPNEWS glances and the ‘Top of Tops’ and web-format ‘Front Page’ which we are now developing, with a planned launch date of October 1. Subscribers will have two easy, intuitive points
of entry to the news file: NEWS for must-read stories, and TOP for snapshots of leading headlines in any given sector.
