Local, regional and national chefs are cooking up a storm in our heated and seated demonstration marquee in the Bull Ring. Alongside multi Michelin -starred celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli, you can expect to see chefs from many local restaurants and cafés - so if you like what you see, why not find their business and try it! Our cookery demonstrations are FREE and very popular, so be sure to get there early as it’s first come first seated!

Browse the colourful stalls and sample some tempting treats at our festival market. There is everything from artisan breads, preserves and cheeses to scrumptious cakes, delectable wines and gins and much more - with many products inspired by, infused with, or created with Yorkshire Forced Rhubarb!

Our lively street performers will keep you entertained throughout the weekend - and watch out for our very own Dame Ruby Rhubarb causing rhubarb-related mayhem around the festival!

DELICIOUS STREET FOOD Grab a bite to eat from our exciting array of street food vendors on Kirkgate (next to Boots) or on the Bull Ring. Alternatively, pop into one of our local cafés or restaurants to enjoy the many special rhubarb-themed goodies on offer.

HEART YORKSHIRE’S COOK OFF Join Dixie and Emma from Heart Yorkshire in the Demonstration Marquee on Saturday as they go head-to-head in a cook-off, with their recipes judged by Jean-Christophe Novelli!

museum & library Located next door to each other in the Wakefield One building, Wakefield Library and Museum are celebrating the festival with activities this Friday and Saturday. Wakefield Library is hosting Rhubarb Festival badge making on Friday and Saturday, along with story time for under 5s (10.30am Friday), and family circus skills workshops with the Rapide Brothers (11am Saturday). Steve Ward, author of ‘Beneath the Big Top: A Social History of the Circus in Britain’, will be holding a talk and book signing in the Library at 2.30pm on Saturday.

Pop into Wakefield Museum to see the rhubarb exhibition, where you can learn the history of everyone’s favourite pink vegetable and hear the sound it makes as it grows in the darkness.

Join a special rhubarb trail to see if you can find the Cathedral’s very own bundle of rhubarb. Pick up the Cathedral Trail Leaflet from the Festival Information Point on Northgate from 10am to 5pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10am to 4pm on Sunday. While you’re visiting, try the Cathedral Kitchen’s Yorkshire Rhubarb Triangle-inspired menu. The Cathedral Kitchen is open from 10am until 3pm.

RHUBARB JAM WAKEFIELD BEER EXCHANGE SATURDAY 24 FEBRUARY Featuring the music of Jilly Riley, an indie/pop/folk influenced singer/songwriter, and Mike Shaw (blues/ country/rock pop singer/guitarist /harmonica player). This gig is free entry, with rhubarb-based beers served throughout the weekend.

RHUBARB ROCKS FERNANDES BREWERY TAP SATURDAY 24 & SUNDAY 25 FEBRUARY Rhubarb Rocks features the music of The Divide (Indie, Britpop, The Jam and Oasis inspired covers band) who will be playing from 9pm onwards. This gig is free entry, with rhubarb-based beers served throughout the weekend.

FRIDAY 23 FEBRUARY Led by Society President Kevin Trickett MBE, both tours begin in the Society’s office on the ground floor of Wakefield Town Hall in Wood Street with a short illustrated talk before commencing the tours. The 10.30am tour will take in the history of Wood Street, with all attendees receiving a free copy of the Society’s book Wood Street: The Heart of Wakefield, published in 2017. This talk and tour will last around 90 minutes. The 2pm tour will include the principal public rooms of the Town Hall and County Hall. There may also be time to explore the outside of the buildings (weather depending). This talk and tour will take around two hours. Numbers are limited and booking is essential using Eventbrite or telephone 07967 516841.

THE HEPWORTH WAKEFIELD Join Wakefield’s Masterchef quarterfinalist chef Chris Hale, of Pop-up North and The Hepworth Café, for an exciting demonstration of how to cook pan-fried mackerel served with rhubarb sauce & pickled rhubarb. Places are free and but booking via www.hepworthwakefield.org is advised.
