Published editions of the Roman Missal, third typical edition (2011) size, cost, and other details ___________________________ How many editions are there? Seven publishers have been approved by the USCCB. There are three sizes: chapel edition – a smaller book with a page size of about 7x9 inches; ritual/altar edition with a page size of about 8.5x11; and a larger edition with a page size of 9x12. Not all publishers will print all sizes. Are all the editions the same? Yes – in that all must follow the same publishing rules, that is, consistent pagination (for example, the Lord’s Prayer must appear on the same page number in all editions), art work limited to certain pages, etc. No – art work, binding, type face, etc. will vary.
When will the missals be shipped? The USCCB Committee for Divine Worship stipulates that publishers will be permitted to ship the missals on and after 01 October 2011. Not earlier.
Can I see the book before placing an order? Probably not the whole book. Publishers are beginning to send out information on size and cost as well as sample pages. This lets the buyer view the font, size of type, color of paper, contrast between the red and black ink of rubrics and prayers etc. Publishers will likely bring a dummy copy to meetings, conventions, and the like – that is, a bound sample copy with mostly blank pages and a few printed sample pages.
Should I place an order right now? You may do so through the Archdiocesan Purchasing Department.
