Introduction to coaching techniques, tools and race training

2008

Finding a good coach The best sailors don’t always make the best coaches and yet the majority of people select coaches based on their sailing ability. Coaches can give you a good head start in your training but only you can apply those skills and knowledge while racing. Here are some things to think about when you are looking for a coach to help you develop your racing skills.  

Identify what is going to make a difference to your sailing e.g. starts, tactics, boat handling Pick a coach that has expertise in the area you want to work on and your class

The best people to advise you on whom to pick are:    

The Junior or Youth Racing Manager Your HPM The Coaching Development Team Dinghy Sailing Magazine’s Coaching Website (run in conjunction with the RYA)

www.dinghysailingmagazine.co.uk What makes a good coach? Good coaches help you develop all of your racing skills.  A good coach should be:  A good listener  Organised and safe  Easy for you to talk to and trust  Avoid talking too much e.g. lectures  Able to understand how you learn  Able to run fun sessions  Knowledgeable of racing and your class

Word of advice: Many coaches feel they should tell you as much as possible and hope that it will make a difference. The best coaches talk less and make sure that what they say is important. Some of the best learning goes on in the boat, not in the classroom.

Coaches for Classes We also run Race Coach Level 2 Courses specifically for classes, where a class can book a tutor to come and train six sailors to become coaches. It’s a great way to develop quality of racing as well as encouraging new members to join. GOOD COACHING = GREAT RACING + MORE MEMBERS = SUCCESSFUL CLASS
