Chapter 3: The Meaning of Human Sexuality

Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September 22-27 with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our Ark library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read.

“Love is Our Mission” because God created us for a reason: to love us, and for us to love one another (Chapter 1). God’s covenant with Israel and the Church reveals what God’s love is like: tender and passionate, but also steadfast and sacrificial (Chapter 2). In Chapter 3, we learn that the bodily, earthly world has spiritual significance. Tangible things sacramentals, acts of charity, sacred art and culture, our liturgical feasts and fasts have the capacity to reveal the glory of God. Marriage, as one of the sacraments, reveals this to us in a special way. The bodies of the spouses, in the complementarity of their masculinity and femininity, have the unique role of revealing God’s nature as a communion of life-giving love. How can a man and a woman imitate God’s love together? How can they live in a way that is intimate and committed, joyful and merciful, forgiving and fertile? Through their participation in the life of the Church, this kind of love becomes possible. God’s love is not an audition, or a temporary experiment, or a self-seeking negotiation. In the same way, marriage is never a private, inward romance, but always discovers its true nature in relation to God and his wider purposes. A sacramental marriage is called to be a little parable of God’s love, always ordered to joy and service. All Catholic sexual ethics flow from these ideas. – Dr. Christopher C. Roberts and Meghan Cokeley

where it ranks in terms of teaching authority. This week we’ll see how official documents were used to define the dogma of the Assumption of our Blessed Mother. Munificentissimus Deus (translated from Latin into English as “Most Bountiful God”) was an apostolic constitution – a solemn, formal written communication of the highest significance – issued on November 1, 1950 by Pope Pius XII in which he proclaimed that Mary “on the completion of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven.” Just to clarify: doctrines of the Church are those teachings which must be believed by the faithful and dogmas are a subset of those doctrines solemnly proposed by the Church as formally revealed in Scripture (the Bible) or Sacred Tradition (the “handing down” of the faith through the apostles and their successors – the popes).

Peter Paul Rubens "Assumption of the Virgin Mary" Oil on panel, 1626 Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium

Does this mean as Catholics we have to believe in the Assumption? The very next paragraph after the proclamation in Munificentissimus Deus answers that question: “Hence if anyone, which God forbid, should dare willfully to deny or to call into doubt that which we have defined, let him know that he has fallen away completely from the divine and Catholic Faith.” (#45)

On August 15th the Church marks the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Although it isn’t a holy day of obligation this year because it falls on a Saturday, let’s not overlook its importance to our faith.

The Assumption is a valuable reminder that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19) and – if treated with the sacredness they deserve – will ultimately join our Blessed Mother Mary in heavenly glory.

Last week we talked about the new encyclical by Pope Francis, Laudato Si’, and
