of the Lord — when those three kings reach the destination of their gift-bearing journey. Christmas songs, therefore, are usually joyful because they celebrate Christ's birth.
I have been known to play Blackhawk’s “We Three Kings (Star of Wonder)” in the middle of the summer. Not just because I love the country band’s tight harmony but also because I’m totally burned out by Christmas music at this most wonderful time of the year. And, really, the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ are relevant any ol’ time, aren’t they? While forming a collection of holiday favorites I had zero awareness of any distinction between music that lyrically anticipated the Savior’s birth and those that celebrated it after the fact. I had no clue that “Joy to the World” doesn’t really make sense any time before Christmas Day. Advent and Christmas are two separate seasons on the liturgical calendar. Advent is four weeks of hope and of longing. It is peaceful preparation as we wait for Christmas and also a time of waiting for when Christ will come again. Advent songs, therefore, are usually penitential and expectant in nature because they anticipate Christmas. The twelve days of the Christmas season actually begin on Christmas Eve and end festively on January 6th — the Epiphany
Secular music, like “Silver Bells” have a sense of Advent (“soon it will be Christmas day”) but there is a whole range of hymns that highlight the theme of expectation. “O Come, O Come Emmanuel” is certainly the most popular, but there is also “Maria Walks amid the Thorn,” a German mediaeval carol which also encompasses the Old Testament prophecy about a future Messiah and the joy in its fulfillment with the birth of Jesus of Nazareth. “Ave Maria” would also be an appropriate choice since the text is the “Hail Mary” prayer in Latin which is based on the announcement of the birth of Jesus. The same topic is featured in “Gabriel’s Message” (a.k.a. “The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came”) which really encapsulates the idea of Advent as a time of solemn reflection in preparation for the Messiah and praising God in that anticipation. Others to add to your Advent playlist worth checking out are “Come Thou Long Expected Jesus,” “Creator of the Stars of Night,” “People, Look East” and “O Come Divine Messiah.” With chestnuts roasting on an open fire and kids jingle-belling it can be hard to recognize the difference between anticipation and celebration.

Hour of Eucharistic Adoration in the morning and evening as well as the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Outside of this structured prayer time, the Sisters are “spiritual mothers” in surrounding parishes, in whatever capacity they are needed. Their charism is to live in imitation of Mary and when pondering how they can aid they ask themselves, “What does a mom do in a family?” A person can speak to the Lord in prayer, research different vocation possibilities, and contemplate what it might be like to live the consecrated life, but the only way to really know is to try it out for yourself. That is why many religious communities offer “come-and-see” retreats where some -one interested in exploring a potential call from God to consecrated service can actually participate in the daily routine of a group of Brothers or Sisters for a limited time. That is the case with the Handmaids of the Heart of Jesus, a r elatively new community of women located about a hundred miles southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They had such a retreat in October where eleven young Catholic women experienced religious life firsthand for a couple of days. They joined the Sisters in prayer, ate meals together, and enjoyed recreation. The normal community schedule is maintained, which consists of rising at 4:50 a.m. then taking part in the Liturgy of the Hours, the official prayer of the Church offered at various times of the day in order to sanctify it. Each day contains a Holy
In addition, participants will hear a series of talks about religious life in general, the distinctive spiritual gifts utilized by the Handmaids, and practical tips for discernment. The overall point of the retreat is to provide an opportunity to be with Jesus and to receive His love. To investigate more, check out their website. Another retreat is coming up in January so if you think you might be interested in exploring a call to the consecrated life, e-mail or call them right away. They will send you a form to fill out (to make sure you qualify: for example, you must have a four-year degree before joining and be debt-free). For those that do go on a “come-and-see” retreat there may be follow-up conversations and a possible invitation to return for a week or two if there is an attraction to their way of life. Often this will be a time when God’s intentions for your life become clearer. “For each one of us, there is only one thing necessary: to fulfill our own destiny, according to God’s will, to be what God wants us to be.” —Thomas Merton
