Stewardship: A Way of Life Feast of the Holy Family “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” John 3:1 During this season of giving, let us remember the most important gift we have received—being children of God. As God’s children, it’s important that we express our love for others as well. Tell your spouse, children and other family members and friends that you love them, frequently.

prayer of Hannah, one of the most beautiful in the Bible. Though weeping bitterly, she addressed God very respectfully, with faith in His power and with an attitude of humility. Nazirite comes from the Hebrew word nazir, meaning “set apart as sacred, dedicated, vowed.” The nazirite vow could be either for a limited period or for life. In Samuel’s case, it was perpetual, or lifelong. Those bound by this vow had to abstain from all the products of the grapevine, from cutting or shaving their hair, and from contact with a corpse. They were regarded as men and women of God like the prophets.
“I will offer him as a perpetual nazirite.” (1 Samuel 1:22) A perpetual what?
There are great similarities between the birth stories of Samuel and of John the Baptist who was also a nazirite. Samson is another example of a perpetual nazirite. All went on to perform great service for the Lord.
In the first reading Hannah dedicates her son, Samuel, to the Lord forever. Hannah, who was unable to conceive, prayed to the Lord in great anguish and asked Him to give her a son. She vowed in her prayer that if God would give her a son, she would give the child to be God’s servant.
On this Feast of the Holy Family, it is interesting to note how in the first reading as well as in the gospel account of the finding of the child Jesus in the temple, parents let their children go so they could fulfill a higher purpose. In both cases they were obedient to the will of God beyond their own wants and desires.
It is worth going back a few verses in 1 Samuel to read and reflect on the

Last week we were introduced to Perfectæ Caritatis, a document issued by Vatican II which deals specifically with institutes of consecrated life. The opening sections consider the principles of renewal, reminding that the purpose of religious life is interior spiritual development. Sections 7-11 distinguish the major types of religious communities from contemplative to active, monasteries, convents and secular Institutes (those leading their normal lives “in the world” while dedicating themselves to God). All are to observe the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience. Aspects of religious life are covered in sections 15-18, including garb, how to live in community, and formal education. The concluding sections attend to how religious communities are founded and maintained, how they are dissolved or combined, how they confer with each other, and how they may promote vocations. It is not just their responsibility to seek candidates, however. “Priests and Christian educators should make serious efforts to foster religious vocations, thereby increasing the strength of the Church, corresponding to its needs... Parents, too, should nurture and protect religious vocations in their children by instilling Christian virtue in their hearts.” (#24)
world.
Perfectæ Caritatis articulated the general principles and Ecclesiae Sanctae, issued in 1966, proposed how these norms should be implemented. The consecrated life was impelled to seek new ways of living in community and new styles of apostolic service, radically changing its way of being and working in the Church and in the

Program Focus
The center of all the Faith Formation programs at Saint Mary Parish in Milton is Sacred Scripture. The teaching of the Scriptures leads students towards the everyday living of the Scriptures through actions. These actions bring the students from the very young through high school to doing good things for others which is centered on the Scriptural command to love God and neighbor as self. The pastor and coordinator are available for the development of the
catechists and their students during the faith formation sessions, as well as other times as needed. Current Members: Joyce Albright, Deb Krausse, Lisa Meyers, Rod Montanye, Mike Sessler
Mother Mary, bless the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing. For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be. Saint Joseph, bless the head of our family. Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he needs to support and direct those under his care. Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Holy Family of Nazareth, make our family and home more and more like yours, until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with you in Heaven. Amen.
