Stewardship: A Way of Life Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “”...come away by yourselves to a lonely place and rest awhile.” Mark 6:31 Do you spend time listening for God? Most of the time, He speaks in soft whispers. Open your heart and hear the Lord. Take time in silence everyday and ask God what it is He wants you to do. Consider making a retreat this year.
Please keep these parishioners and family members in your prayers: Helen Goerke Jim Jenkins Jeff Kneiert Austin Martin Scot Nelson Val Pakes Gayle Reed Kathy Roberts Brett Urban Ed Windle
WORD OF LIFE: “In a special way, believers in Christ must defend and promote this right, aware as they are of the wonderful truth recalled by the Second
Vatican Council: ‘By his incarnation the Son of God has united himself in some fashion with every human being’.” Pope Saint John Paul II Evangelium Vitae, no. 2
Lily’s Column with Fr. Dave: Over the next couple of weeks, Lily’s column will share a method of praying that was created by Walter Rauschenbusch… Do not mock God in your prayers; do not beg Him to come to you. Remember He is already close to your soul and desires your voiced petitions.
Ever wonder about some of the words in the bible and their meaning? Take a look at this weekends readings… by Paul Schultz
“Woe” People in the Bible used the word “woe” much like we would today. They might exclaim, “Woe is me!” which would express sorrow or misery for their sufferings. However, God uses “woe” differently, especially in the Old Testament. The first reading from Scripture this weekend utilizes a style of speech called a “woe oracle.” “Oracle” is an important concept we’ll cover another time but, for now, it is enough to understand it as communications from God. Oracles were most often pronouncements made by God through a human’s voice. They condemned specific actions that obstructed the work of God in the world and foreshadowed God's punishment against the sinners. The people speaking God’s words were called prophets and the one delivering the message in this case is Jeremiah. The recipients are the careless leaders of God’s people, the kings of Israel and Judas. The woe oracle in the selected passage from the Book of Jeremiah contains four elements that uniquely characterize this style of speech: an announcement of distress (the opening word “Woe”), the reason for the
distress (“You have scattered my sheep and driven them away.” and “You have not cared for them”), a prediction of doom (“I will take care to punish your evil deeds.”), and God’s corrective response (He will bring together those separated by injustice, “appoint shepherds for them who will shepherd them so that they need no longer fear and tremble” and raise up a king who “shall reign and govern wisely, he shall do what is just and right in the land”). So, when God chooses to speak to His people through a prophet and uses the word “woe” it is a signal for the listeners – and us – to pay close attention and recognize where we have strayed from God’s plan and adjust our conduct to avoid divine judgment.
“Enmity” “Enmity” is more than severe dislike. You may have a profound disgust toward broccoli, for example, but that strong feeling doesn’t quite approach the hostility of the term “enmity.” Enmity is deep-rooted hatred. In the second reading this weekend from Ephesians, St. Paul writes that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, all who are faithful are reconciled to God whether they are Jews or Gentiles (“he is our peace, he who made both one and broke down the dividing wall of enmity”), two races who considered each other enemies. All who follow Christ are now united in Him, and the hatred that was firmly established has been “put to death” by the saving work of Jesus.
