Stewardship: A Way of Life Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35 Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” - sacred and “facere” - to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

Please keep these parishioners and family members in your prayers: Bob Dibble Jim Jenkins Jeff Kneiert Austin Martin Julie Miller Scot Nelson Val Pakes Gayle Reed Kathy Roberts Brett Urban Ed Windle WORD OF LIFE: “Man is called to a fullness of life which far exceeds the dimensions of his earthly existence, because it consists in sharing

the very life of God. The loftiness of this supernatural vocation reveals the greatness and the inestimable value of human life even in its temporal phase. Life in time, in fact, is the fundamental condition, the initial stage and an integral part of the entire unified process of human existence. Pope Saint John Paul II

Lily’s Column with Fr. Dave: “My way of communicating with God as a boy (and often even now) was through the lyrics of a song… So I didn’t have a problem some people do who say “I don’t know how to pray.” I used the songs to communicate with God...To me songs were the telephone to heaven, and I tied up the line quite a bit.”

Individuals are asked to keep a family journal throughout this next year. Each month there will be an entry in the journal focusing on the theme. This month, the focus is on oneself. Why was I created? Since I was created in the image and likeness of God, when I am kind and loving to others...I’m being like God! When family members see other members doing loving deeds for one another, they have been instructed to write those down on a piece of paper to share with one another at another time. These are called, “God Sightings.”

Those attending the family ministry decorated jars for their God Sightings. Elementary children were given a log for keeping track of God Sightings to hang on their refrigerators. All are encouraged to give it a try!! In our world with sadness, violence, war, terrorism...help raise one another up with God Sightings! There will be some awareness projects and events for children, youth and families in the next couple of weeks focusing on the issue of homelessness. If we are all created for joy and in the image and likeness of God, we need to remember those who need our love, support and help.

To pray in this manner is a person “who shows no regard for the Lord’s commandments and yet seeks Heavenly gifts,” writes St. Bede. This is a person “who, having lost his taste for Heavenly things, seeks only earthly things.”

Have you ever said a prayer like this, as a joke or even half-seriously? This is something the apostle James addresses in this weekend’s second reading from his epistle (the Greek word epistole means “letter” or “message”). “You ask but do not receive,” writes St. James, “because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” Passion in this context is a pursuit of pleasure, but the self-indulgent kind. A distinction is being made between worldly wisdom and the wisdom of God. Another translation of James 4:2 puts it this way: “You want something and do not have it; so you commit murder. And you covet something and cannot obtain it; so you engage in disputes and conflicts. You do not have, because you do not ask.” In other words, people are not praying for their needs because they think they can do it through their own power. It is an act of independence when God wants us to ask for things as an act of dependence.

When one is fighting the will of God it causes disharmony, internally and externally. “How can you be at peace if you allow passions you do not even attempt to control to drag you away from the ‘pull’ of grace?” (St. Josemaría Escriva) A great many of our prayers seem to go unanswered because our motivation in prayer is improper, when we fail to seek wisdom from above.

WORLD MEETING OF FAMILIES PRAYER God and Father of us all, in Jesus, your Son and our Savior, you have made us your sons and daughters In the family of the Church. May your grace and love help our families in every part of the world be united to one another in fidelity to the Gospel.

May the example of the Holy Family with the aid of your Holy Spirit, guide all families, especially those most troubled, to be homes of communion and prayer and to always seek your truth and live in your love Through Christ our Lord. Amen Jesus, Mary and Joseph, pray for us!

Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September 22-27 with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our parish library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read.

Chapter 9: Mother, Teacher, Family: The Nature and Role of the Church

From its opening paragraphs, this catechism has explained how we were created for communion with God and one another. The Church has institutional forms because this communion must be visible and tangible, and active in the

world. The Church’s earthen vessels are necessary for proclaiming a spiritual reality: the Church is the Bride of Christ, a “she,” not an “it.” In the words of Saint John XXIII, the Church is our mother and teacher, our comforter and guide, our family of faith. All the baptized are the Church’s sons and daughters, giving Christians our most fundamental and authentic identity. As members of the Church, we are members of the “one body” that is not defined by any human qualification, such as age, nationality, or intelligence, or by any human achievement, such as efficiency, organization, or moral virtue. Even when her people and leaders sin, we still need the Church’s wisdom, sacraments, support, and proclamation of the truth. Just as our own sinfulness never erases our creation in God’s image, when Catholics sin, that does not erase the Church’s holiness. The Church’s essence depends on Jesus, a foundation which holds us accountable, but which is also deeper and more secure than any human achievement or failure. God never abandons us. Despite her many failures, the Church cannot shirk the responsibility to preach and live the Gospel. “Love is our mission,” and the Church is the family that teaches and embodies this love. - Dr. Christopher C. Roberts, editor, Love is Our Mission Preparatory Catechism

Education Commission The primary work of the Education Commission is to develop policies, help plan and continue to develop Catholic Christian formation for students from pre-school through junior year in high school.

Meetings Education Commission meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Ark Library. The chair, recorder and prayer positions are rotated each month.

Program Focus The center of all the Faith Formation programs at Saint Mary Parish in Milton is Sacred Scripture. The teaching of the Scriptures leads students towards the everyday living of the Scriptures through actions. These actions bring the students from the very young through high school to doing good things for others which is centered on the Scriptural command to love God and neighbor as self. The

available for the development of the catechists and their students during the faith formation sessions, as well as other times as needed. Current Members: Joyce Albright, Deb Krausse, Lisa Meyers, Rod Montanye, Mike Sessler
