WORD OF LIFE: “Although we may feel unsure how best to comfort those who mourn, we must stand with them in

their time of suffering. Miscarriage touches the lives of many people, yet all too often this tragedy remains unaddressed. This lack of response not only often leads to unresolved grief, but also fails to clearly manifest our belief that each person, from conception onward, is precious and unique.” Solace & Strength in the Sorrow of Miscarriage 2014-15 Respect Life Program USCCB

Jesus talks about scandal and the temptations to sin in this weekend’s gospel reading, and he is pretty explicit about the consequences. If we understand sin as being an offense against God, then by leading others to commit sin by something we say or do or fail to do we are causing scandal. The original meaning of scandal is a trap or a stumbling block which causes one to trip and fall. An honest question we must ask ourselves is, “Am I teaching another to sin through my bad example?” What does Jesus think of someone who does this? “It would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” It seems that Jesus takes scandal seriously and so should we. Jesus goes on to explain in equally vivid figurative language that not only should we refrain from sinning and encouraging others to do so, we should avoid near occasions of sin. Fr. John Hardon, SJ, explains an occasion of sin as “any person, place, or thing that of its nature or because of human frailty can lead one to do wrong, thereby committing sin.” It is a “near” occasion if the danger is certain and probable.

For example, don’t keep alcohol in your house if you can’t control drinking. If watching TV draws you into sin, leave it off. If you struggle with sexual sin, don’t surf the internet when you are bored. But it’s more than that. Whatever might be causing you to sin, Jesus says, “cut it off.” He didn’t say wean yourself off the bad habit, but to completely cut it off. If that means cancelling cable or getting rid of the computer, those are the drastic measures necessary in this life to ensure we don’t lose heaven and plunge ourselves into the unquenchable fire of hell in the afterlife. Just as a doctor might remove a limb or some part of the body in order to preserve the life of the whole body, so we must be ready to part with anything that causes us to sin and which leads to spiritual death. In one version of an Act of Contrition that is said during Confession, we promise to avoid the near occasions of sin. It is a prayer we can pray outside of the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation, too, to help us perform the moral surgery essential for the eternal good of our soul.

— Paul Schultz

Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September 22-27 with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our parish library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read.

Chapter 10: Choosing Life We began this catechesis by explaining that God made us for a reason. The God we meet in Jesus Christ loves us, and calls us to love as he does. Marriage is the sacrament that brings human fertility into this mission of love. If we understand that love is our mission in our marriages,

families, and parishes, then we have learned a basic truth that will shape many other areas of life. For example, if fidelity to the covenant requires restraint and perseverance, if our bodies and the material world can be vessels of divine grace, then we can approach questions of sexuality, ecology, technology, and medicine with renewed commitment and insight. We now realize why a catechesis on the family has actually been a catechesis for all of life. If we have learned to think of our families as domestic churches, if we have learned why moral individualism is not the right context for receiving Catholic teaching, then we have adopted a view that will reorient our whole identity. This mission is not reserved for the few or for the extraordinary. Nor does it mean that families somehow have to stop being themselves or seek after some impossible perfection in order to witness to the Gospel. It may mean that we are sometimes minorities in a secular culture that sees life differently. But the Church has wide experience of many different cultural contexts, offering wisdom and advice about spiritual practices to sustain us. Please see the catechism for more details. Love is our origin and destiny, which is why only the way of love can truly satisfy, and that is why Love is Our Mission. - Dr. Christopher C. Roberts, editor, Love is Our Mission Preparatory Catechism
