Stewardship: A Way of Life Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time “Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” James 2:5 What is more important—being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society teaches us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith we know that material things really do not matter and we are more willing to share what we have.

WORD OF LIFE: “Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will

uphold you with my victorious right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

At the dawn of creation, God made man the steward of his handiwork and charged him to cultivate and protect it. Human labor is part of that creation and continues God’s creative work. This truth leads us to consider work as both a gift and a duty. Indeed, labor is not a mere commodity but has its own inherent dignity and worth. Pope Francis 5-28-14

SUCCESS STORY FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF GIFTS MEN’S SHELTER: Matthew was no stranger to the GIFTS Men’s Shelter. He had been with us on and off over the years. Last fall when he came, something was different. He was tired of doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. That is the definition of insanity, right? Matthew was ready to surrender and give God control and what transpired has been beautiful to watch. Matthew had to change just about everything in his world. His struggle is addiction. He entered an intensive outpatient treatment program (again) but this time was different. Matthew listened to everything they said. He would come back to the Resource Center and share what the lesson was from the morning and what he learned from it. He would even bring us extra handouts for the other guys. After he completed the program it was time to look for work as he maintained his community-based recovery. He sent out TONS of applications but was having no luck. His persistence paid off because he was able to get a full-time job that offered a living wage AND benefits! Glory be to God!

Now that he had a full-time job, the next step was to think about moving out of the shelter. Matthew knew it was time to go, but also knew he still needed some accountability in his life. He applied for transitional living and was accepted. Matthew moved out last month. It was a day full of emotions! Scared, happy, nervous but most of all the feeling of being BLESSED! Matthew still needs our prayers. While you are on your knees, please thank God for the work he has done with the GIFTS Men’s Shelter and the men He has sent to us. Stephanie

CREATED FOR JOY 2226 Education in the faith by the parents should begin in the child's earliest years. This already happens when family members help one another to grow in faith by the witness of a Christian life in keeping with the Gospel. Family catechesis precedes, accompanies, and enriches other forms of instruction in the faith. Parents have the mission of teaching their children to pray and to discover their vocation as children of God. The parish is the Eucharistic community and the heart of the liturgical life of Christian families; it is a privileged place for the catechesis of children and parents. Jesus sought to preach his message to the Gentiles (people who were not Jews). “To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the Kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent.” (Luke 4:43) Jesus left the crowds and journeyed to this non-Jewish territory, north to the prosperous port city of Tyre on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. There he encountered a Gentile woman born in the Roman province of Phoenicia and drove an evil spirit out of her daughter. Jesus traveled north to the coastal city of Sidon, a popular place of healing in Roman times.

“...he returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis.” (Mark 7:31) We have heard plenty of proper names in the gospel readings throughout the week, including the healing of the man with an unclean spirit in the city of Capernaum to Jesus calling the first disciples beside the lake of Gennesaret, the ancient name for the sea of Galilee (as well as a tract of land on the western shore). Therefore, it is helpful to be acquainted with the geography of the area to help us visualize the journey of Christ throughout the New Testament. Before we pick up the story of Jesus curing a deaf man in this weekend’s gospel reading, let’s see where he has been traveling. At the end of chapter six in Mark’s gospel, Jesus walked on water to his disciples in the boat struggling against inclement weather on the Sea of Galilee just out from Bethsaida. Afterward, they crossed over to Gennesaret where Jesus healed the sick. As chapter seven begins, Jesus scolds the Pharisees and the scribes for their false traditions and ceremonies. Since the start of his ministry,

Navigating through the district of Decapolis is where Jesus is located when a deaf man with a speech impediment is brought to him. Decapolis is Greek for “ten cities” and this region contained autonomous cities east of the Sea of Galilee that were inhabited mostly by Gentiles. Some of these cities indicated on the map above include Gergesa, Hippus, Dion, Raphana, and Gadara. This is just a small sample of the area Jesus covered during his healing ministry. His most important journey was yet to come: his arrival at Jerusalem to complete the work of redemption that God his Father sent him to do. (For perspective, it is a distance of 64 miles to the Holy City due south from Nazareth, a five day journey on foot,) Bonus: Looking ahead, you will now be able to picture where Caesarea Philippi is when it is mentioned in next week’s gospel!

— Paul Schultz

Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Held every three years it is the world’s largest Catholic gathering of families. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The eighth edition will be held in Philadelphia from September 22-27 with an anticipated visit from Pope Francis. The theme is “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive,” emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society. A document of religious instruction on family life has been prepared under this title. Each week for the next ten weeks, our parish will explore each chapter from this catechism, with reflections developed by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office for the New Evangelization. You can order a copy of this beautifully illustrated catechism (or look through one in our parish library) and learn about the World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org. There is also a pamphlet in the rack on the wall near the church entrance with more information that you can take home to read.

Chapter 7: Light in a Dark World Pope Francis observed that the Church is popular with the world when Catholics work for social justice. But, the Pope continued, with respect to “the cultural crisis” facing the family, “we find it difficult to make people see that when we raise other questions less palatable to

public opinion, we are doing so out of fidelity to precisely the same convictions about human dignity and the common good.” This chapter carefully examines subjects such as pornography, contraception, and so-called same-sex marriage. These are topics where Catholic teaching tends to be at odds with current worldly opinion. Reading this chapter in its entirety is an opportunity to consider the reasons for the Church’s teaching. Each one of these issues deserves more space than this summary paragraph can offer. But as we said at the start of this catechesis, all Church teaching about marriage, the family, and sexuality flows from Jesus. Catholic moral theology builds upon basic Christian convictions about God’s creation and covenant, humanity’s fall, and Christ’s incarnation, life, crucifixion, and resurrection. These teachings involve costs and suffering for all who would be Jesus’ disciples, but they also open up new opportunities for beauty and human flourishing. This chapter is your chance to explore how it all fits together, even when it might mean taking unpopular stances in our culture. This chapter explains how every time the Church says “no” to something which secular society accepts, it is for the sake of enabling a deeper “yes” to God and his plan for our lives. - Dr. Christopher C. Roberts, editor, Love is Our Mission Preparatory Catechism
