Paradise Valley Unified School District NCHS School Council October 22, 2012 The Vision of North Canyon High School is to create an environment that fosters a belief in the importance of lifelong learning. To this end, students, staff, and community will collaborate and communicate on the best means of creating a respectful environment that encourages student achievement. Meeting called to order at 2:30 pm in the NCHS Administrative Conference Room. The following School Council members were in attendance: Elaine Jacobs, Principal Sheryl Chariton, Teacher Jean Davis, Teacher Jennifer Swanson, Parent Linda Moser, ESP Representative Naman Shah, NCHS Student Body President Absent: Ann Bergersen, Mike Bernardino, Sharla Cook, Brett Goshert and Becky McHolland UPC Update: Becky McHolland was absent from the meeting. Elaine Jacobs handed out the UPC Meeting Highlights from the October 17, 2012 meeting. Jennifer Swanson attended and went over a few details…  The MSAN Conference was a huge success and thank you to all that volunteered!  There may soon be changes in the grading process.  If Proposition 204 passes, it will provide approx. $18-20 million a year. If this does not pass, we will be $13 million in the hole.  Charter School vs. Public Schools…Charter schools receive approx. $1,000. more per student than public schools. The PVUSD may consider changing some of our schools to charter. Next UPC Meeting: New Common Core Standards Student Report~  Homecoming was a HUGE success. Dress Up Days were simple, the assembly was well attended and the students liked it. It was made to appeal to all. Ms. Jacobs said there were no class colors and the “sea of purple” was impressive.  The carnival was very well attended. It was cooler on the softball field and everyone seemed to like it so much better. The clubs created more activities and we may be able to have less inflatables next year, which would keep costs down.  Parents of the Royalty very proudly walked their student’s out. School Council Minutes ~ Page 2 10-22-2012  There has been conversation in having the Homecoming Dance moved to North Canyon cafeteria next year. The cost is becoming prohibitive and the ASU campus is so large. It is still in the discussion stage. That would leave prom being the only dance off campus. It would make prom that much more special.  “Rowdy Rattlers” is a group of students to help improve school spirit.  Sophomore Respect Day was fabulous! We are hoping for much more of the same.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 pm.
