Lab Data Manual Preview with Lesson Plan by M. Schottenbauer, Ph.D. Topic:

Scientific Instrumentation Selection; Physics of Motion

Introduction:

Ice skating consists of motion: translational (straight) and rotational (curved) motion.

Equipment:

Dual-Range Force Sensor Motion Detector

Experiment:

The dual-range force sensor is used to pull a skate straight across a sheet of ice, as a motion detector tracks the motion of the skate.

Discussion Questions: 1) As the dual-range force sensor is used to pull the skate across the ice in a straight line, how are force, position,

velocity, and acceleration related to each other? 2) How does the motion of a double-runner child skate compare to a child hockey skate? 3) What is the role of inertia with respect to the motion of the skate? 4) What is the role of friction in these experiments? Can a coefficient of friction be calculated from the available

information? 5) What is the role of measurement error in these experiments?

6) What are the scales of the axes? Are they different for the different graphs?
