SCRIPT With careful strokes, Brigitta Renyaan tries to massage away the psychological trauma of children coping with the tsunami. Brigitta is a Catholic nun who has spent years treating young victims of sectarian violence on the Indonesian island of Ambon. She says her experience there connects her with young Acehnese, who have also grown up in a region long afflicted by violence. “Acehnese children have a two-part trauma. Not only are they dealing with the trauma from the tsunami but the also have years of trauma from the rebel conflict.” Brigitta applies a mixture of tai qi and traditional massage. She says her technique can lower fevers and help young people cast away their sadness. “I use the energy within my body to transmit it to the other person and this energy empowers that person to heal themselves.” Brigitta works for a Muslim aid organization at one of 17 UNICEF supported children’s centres across Aceh province. These centres provide a variety of activities for more than eight thousand children, including basic education, drawing, playing games, and dancing. (up sound dancing) The children centres are also the focal point for the registration and tracing of children separated from family members. So far more than 1200 been documented, with their photos and personal information sent to a central database. These centres not only offer children a temporary escape from the horrors they’ve seen; they also give them a forum to rebuild social networks. “UNICEF strongly believes that building a safe and protective environment for children in emergencies, and in general, in a stable situation, is the best way to support their recovery and the healing process.” Every week, one children’s centre on the outskirts of Banda Aceh holds a special activity on the beach. Just meters from the sea that brought so much devastation, the children compete in drawing contests and games. For a few hours at least, the tragedy is all but forgotten. In Banda Aceh, Indonesia, this is Steve Nettleton reporting for UNICEF. For every child, advance humanity.
