DAC Lao Women’s Na/onal Team to compete in 28th Southeast Asian Games Vien%ane, 16 August 2017: The DAC Lao Women’s Na%onal Rugby team will travel to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to compete in the 29th Asian Games this week, marking only the second %me rugby has been included in the Games since 2007 where the Lao Women’s Na%onal Team won bronze. The DAC Lao Women’s Na1onal Rugby Team will compete in the Southeast Asian Games from 19-20 August. The trip will mark the second 1me rugby has been included in the regional Games since 2007 in Korat, Thailand and is an exci1ng step for the team who has shown incredible dedica1on to their sport in an effort to posi1vely represent their country. Building on their successes at the Asia Rugby 7s Trophy in Vien1ane in February, 2017 and at Southeast Asian 7s in Singapore, the DAC Women’s Na1onal Team has been training six days a week with Head Coach Pisa Vongdeuanpheng and Strength and Condi1oning Coach Savanhxay Xayyasone in prepara1on. The team also par1cipated in a training camp with Australian Rugby interna1onals Rebecca Tavo and Sam Caslick in July. Pisa Vongdeuanpheng said of the camp, “The Tribe7s coaches helped me to learn new techniques to con1nue to improve how our players play. They have experience at the highest level so we were lucky to get to spend so much 1me with them and learn from them.” This 2017 na1onal team squad also features players who have come up through the LRF’s ChildFund Pass It Back teams. Vongdeuanpheng commented, “It’s exci1ng to see our Champa Ban Youth Rugby Programme producing players with strong ball handling skills and more rugby knowledge. Many of these players are s1ll young so SEA Games will be a big compe11on for us and it’s exci1ng that there are so many players coming up under them. These Na1onal Team players have already started to take their skills and experiences back to their youth teams.” The Southeast Asian Games Rugby Sevens Compe11on in August will be held at the Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya Stadium in Malaysia. The women’s Rugby 7s event has a^racted teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and the Lao PDR. “We know the players are doing everything they can in training and prepara1on to put the Lao team in conten1on for a medal and we hope to report back that they have been successful in this mission,” comments LRF’s President, Mr. Virayouth Rathikoun, ‘Even if they are not able to bring back a medal this year, we know that by developing our youth structures and reaching more than 3,000 players in Laos through our ChildFund Pass It Back teams, we are developing the future players who have already begun to show they are strong medal contenders.” The LRF thanks DAC Management for their Elite and Pla1num Sponsorship of the Lao Rugby Federa1on and support for the DAC Lao Na1onal Teams over the past five years and for their support for the 29th Southeast Asian Games.
