Keynote speaker Doug Lipp, an internationally known customer service expert, presented “How to Increase Your Competitive Advantage in a Global Environment,” addressing both domestic and global service, leadership and cultural diversity in the forest products services industry. The Mobile event marked the first Transport Symposium opened by a guest speaker, in part due to Lipp’s experience in improving corporate culture. He is the former head of training at Disney Studio’s Walt Disney University, known for its “Traditions” orientation program, as well as the move from a ‘corporate culture’ to a ‘progressive powerhouse.’ Other conference sessions included Port Security and Surcharge Issues; How the Forest Products Industry is Going Green; Changes in Trade Patterns: Looking Ahead in China, South America and India; and Forest Products and Alternative Fuels: A Perfect Match. Conference speakers represented leading industry organizations including CSX Transportation, U.S. Customs & Border Protection, Choren Industries and Klausner Trading. After-hours entertainment included a water tour of the Alabama State Port Authority’s facilities and a behind the scenes tour of the Mobile Press-Register’s newspaper production plant, as well as networking receptions and time to visit the exhibit area. “It’s a rare opportunity for a port or a city to be visited by 28 countries in the same four-day period,” said Buddy Greene, vice president of IFPTA and of Cooper/T Stevedoring Co. Inc. “It was great to be recognized by people who had never been to this port. This year’s show, according to the board of directors, had the best ever opening night ceremony. The keynote speaker was excellent and well received and we will continue to do that in the future. The exhibit area was praised for being right next to the hotel and was much larger than two years ago so people were free to move around much easier and didn’t have to leave the exhibit area for meetings. It was a smashing success.” Mobile was chosen as the destination for Transport Symposium 17 in part because it is one of the largest and more modern forest products ports in the nation, but also because of the recent investments made by the City of Mobile, Retirement Systems of Alabama, and private developers that have revitalized downtown Mobile in celebration of over 300 years of southern cultural heritage and charm. The meeting alternates between a U.S. and European port. The previous event was in Antwerp, Belgium, in 2005. The next Transport Symposium, scheduled for 2009, is in Liverpool, England. o nov e m b e r 2 0 0 7 • A l a b a m a S e a port

Standard Concrete's barge slip is capable of loading a 60-foot wide barge.
Standard Concrete: Designing & Building Success Designing, producing and delivering their product on time is a main goal of Standard Concrete Products. The company, headquartered in Columbus, Ga., with locations in Atlanta, Savannah, Tampa and Mobile, manufactures a wide variety of prestress and precast products for both industrial and commercial use. Just in time is exactly what Standard Concrete’s Mobile location was when the concrete product supplier’s site was completed and began production in late-Dec. 2006. After sustaining extensive damage during Hurricane Katrina, the Biloxi Bay Bridge, linking Ocean Springs to Biloxi, was in need of replacement. “The plant had been planned for a number of years, but the timing of the Mobile facility worked out just in time to supply the Biloxi Bay bridge,” said Peter Pieterse, division manager at Standard Concrete’s Mobile location. “Currently, this project has been our main focus. It has been quite an intense production schedule to keep up with since there was a definite need to expedite its construction.”

The Mobile production facility provided the concrete girders for the Biloxi bridge. Girders are the large beams, usually in an I-beam shape, that provide the main support for the horizontal element of the structure. Timing, however, is not the only strong suit the Mobile facility boasts. Equipped with the latest industry technology and transportation infrastructure, the Mobile site has the capabilities to provide prestress and precast products to Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida. “We design and produce products for all the surrounding states,” said Pieterse. “Our efforts cover work from different states’ Departments of Transportation to various industrial and commercial needs.” Products that the Standard Concrete’s Mobile location provides are pilings (both square and cylinder), slabs and girders, box beams, sheet piles, and heavy structural marine and highway elements. Approximately 135 employees work at the Mobile facility Monday through Saturday.

Prestressed concrete girders for the Biloxi Bay project. State-of-the-art product, on-site production capability and transportation make Standard Concrete’s Mobile facility one of the best on the Gulf Coast. Other projects of the company include the Destin West Yacht Marina, Barataria Basin Land Bridge and the Pensacola Fishing Pier.
“Our own state-of-the-art batch plant allows us to mix concrete on-site instead of using ready mix material,” stated Pieterse. “We have the capability to cast prestressed concrete pile from 12 inches to 30 inches. Also, we cast 54-inch and 60-inch slender pile, and we cast all typical prestressed-type bridge girders.”
The Mobile facility is one of four thriving locations in the Standard Concrete Products company striving to supply and facilitate some of the most challenging concrete designs and builds in the area. For more information about Standard Concrete Products, Inc., please visit www.standardconcrete.org. o
Transportation and lift capabilities are another strength of the company’s Mobile operations. Located on the Theodore Industrial Canal, the concrete product provider has a barge slip capable of loading a 60-foot wide barge in addition to its full range of trucking capabilities. In addition, the production facility’s lifting capacity includes two, 100-ton Shuttlelift cranes and two, 70-ton MiJack cranes. “Having the versatility to ship by truck or by barge is a tremendous bonus to our operation here in Mobile,” said Pieterse. “And our rubber tire gantry cranes allow us to move product from the casting beds to storage or to barge or truck.” State-of-the-art product, such as self-compacting concrete (SCC), is another feature that sets the concrete facility apart. This type of concrete can fill a form requiring less vibration as well as produce a superior finish, setting it apart as the latest in concrete technology. “Essentially, regular concrete requires vibration to get it to fill the area and has to be finished to have a certain cosmetic appearance. It is often very difficult and costly with time and equipment,” explained Pietserse. “SCC flows very easily into the form we are trying to fill and requires less finishing, so we will end up with a better product with less labor and equipment.”

Using Inland Waterways for Commercial Navigation & Economic Development For nearly 50 years, the Tri Rivers Waterway Development Association (TRWDA) has been promoting inland waterway commerce and navigation, along with economic development within the communities along the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint waterways. The Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers System is a federal project authorized by the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1946. It includes navigation, flood damage reduction, hydropower, environmental stewardship and recreation. The ACF Project includes three rivers running through three states. The system runs from Lake Lanier in north Georgia, then joins the Flint River at the Alabama-Georgia-Florida line and runs to the Apalachicola Bay in the Florida panhandle. The TRWDA’s primary interests run from Columbus, Ga., to the Apalachicola Bay, as well as the Flint River, encompassing some 84,000 acres of water and more than 1,000 miles of shoreline. The system also includes three dams and locks: the Jim Woodruff Dam, the George W. Andrews Dam and the Walter F. George Dam. Two of the dam sites produce hydropower. The Walter F. George Hydropower Plant has 145 megawatts of total capacity and The Jim Woodruff Hydropower Plant has 30 megawatts of total capacity. According to Billy Houston, executive director of TRWDA, a $50 million upgrade is curA map below shows the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers System. rently taking place to the hydropower plants over the next five to seven years. Recreation in the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint project area has a strong economic impact. In 2005, more than five million people visited Lakes George, Andrew and Seminole and their campgrounds. By using a very conservative tourist bureau figure of $60 a day per tourist, a $300,000,000 impact on the local economy results from recreation, said Houston. The figure does not factor in new job creation. TRWDA and the International Business and Economic Center of Troy University, located in south central Alabama, are developing a study of the economic impact of the entire ACF project, due to be completed in December 2007. “It’s of primary importance to work with the cities and counties along the riverways and work with economic developers showing how the river can be an asset,” said Houston. The leadership of TRWDA also includes past president Tom Moorer and president Mike Godfrey of Southern Nuclear Operating Company, a subsidiary of Southern Company; Allen Owen of MeadWestvaco; and Duane Dodson of Georgia Power. TRWDA also works with a board comprised of citizens residing along the ACF Project. “Those companies situated along the rivers directly impact the local communities and may increase waterway commerce in the future,” Houston said. MeadWestvaco Mahrt Mill Operations located in Cottonton, Ala., employs more than 1,000 people; sixty percent of its employees live in Alabama. In a 1999 economic value report, the company’s regional economic impact was $1.2 billion. Georgia Pacific of Cedar Springs, Ga., is also a major economic entity along the ACF Project employing 900 people. The Farley Nuclear Plant in Columbia, Ala., produces 20 percent of Alabama Power Company’s electricity. It employs more than 800 workers with an annual payroll of $50 million. Additionally, its low utility rates support local economic development. The Farley Nuclear facility has the potential to be the site of another reactor in the next 10 to 15 years, said Houston.

Container volumes are expected to triple and additional traffic is expected via the Gulf of Mexico. With the Port of Mobile’s new Container Terminal and its connections to the rest of the country through its inland waterways system, Houston feels Alabama and Georgia are well-situated to meet the challenge. TRWDA's area of interest encompasses some 84,000 acres of water and more than 1,000 miles of shoreline. It also includes three dams and locks: the Jim Woodruff Dam, the George W. Andrews Dam and the Walter F. George Dam (pictured).
Other economic factors of the rivers, Houston pointed out, are sewer treatment facilities stretching from Columbus, Ga./Phenix City, Ala., to Apalachicola, Fla. Irrigation for agricultural needs is also extremely important. Another factor is the potential for real estate developments from Columbus to Apalachicola Bay where millions of dollars have already been invested. In 2007, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers pointed to a shortage of boat slips on the ACF Project during the spring and summer months, pointing to a need for additional marinas. As a result, new marinas with dry storage capacity are in the planning stages. These facilities would have the capacity to service large, ocean-going vessels needing to go inland during hurricane season. For maximum potential, this directly relates to the need for navigable channels from Columbus to the Apalachicola Bay for travel and recreation, as well as hurricane protection. For TRWDA, maintaining navigation on the river is one of the organization’s biggest challenges, for both recreational and commercial needs. Houston noted that a 10- to 12-mile stretch of the Apalachicola River that is crucial to transportation is at risk due to its low depth, resulting in a need for regular maintenance and dredging. As the Corps of Engineers has not dredged this section in approximately five years, Houston said that TRWDA has spent considerable time and effort to get the Corps to address this problem. TRWDA works with the Corps of Engineers, the Alabama State Port Authority, the U.S. Coast Guard, and various federal and state representatives to promote both the waterway and its growing needs. TRWDA representatives travel to Washington, D.C., annually with other inland waterway systems to speak as an advocate for the Corps of Engineers’ budget needs.
The Coalition of Alabama Waterways, of which TRWDA is a member, is currently developing a multi-phase Alabama Freight Mobility Study to provide information in the potential of these inland waterway systems. Houston said information from this study provides another reason to continue using the ACF for navigation for commercial transportation. In addition to reducing traffic on the nation’s highways and railroads, it provides an affordable, fuel efficient means of transportation that also reduces air and noise pollution. The study is being carried out by Hanson Professional Services of Nashville, Tenn. The availability of these three rivers for commercial transportation could affect economic development by raising the standard of living along the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint rivers, said Houston, who has spoken to companies who would use water commercial navigation if it was available. Twice in the past 10 years, Farley Nuclear Plant has needed replacement parts, valued in the millions of dollars, that were too large to carry by road or rail. He also points to the U.S. military, specifically Fort Benning and Fort Rucker, as potential waterway clients who could save millions of dollars on transportation costs. “There are big challenges ahead for the ACF to be all it should be. TRWDA is poised to meet the challenge in the present and especially for the future,” Houston stated. “We’re involved with all aspects of the river—navigation for commercial businesses, recreational and tourism industries, hydropower and environmental stewardship,” said Houston. “We look at the vision of what the creators of the waterways saw. They built the waterway for economic growth. We think it has worked and we see the same in the future.” He explained that TRWDA’s current goals include a concern with the region’s drought. “We’d love to see the states— Alabama, Georgia and Florida—work with the Corps to find manageable plans for the future when this happens again. It’s a critical situation for the tri-river, tri-state area.” o
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the country’s global trade is expected to double between 2005 and 2020.

RTC Commodity Transfer: U n i q u e ly S e rv i c i n g t h e G u l f R e g i o n When one of the largest grain companies in the world asked RTC Commodity Transfer to establish a transfer site in the U.S. Gulf Region, Mobile seemed like the natural choice. Although co-owner and founder Tim Jilik has other shipping operations in several U.S. cities, everything seemed to point to Mobile. "The Port of Mobile is the eastern most ocean port that is serviced by all of the major railroads with the railroad having destination yards," Jilik said. Jilik and his business partner, Paul Stevens, believe that the expansion of the container terminal and potential of five major ocean container carriers operating in the Port of Mobile will open of a great avenue for shipment of containers out of the area in the near future. Also a factor in choosing Mobile was its aggressive business climate. These factors will make Mobile the focal point on the Gulf Coast within the next five years, said Jilik.
Grain from the hopper car is deposited into the grain auger or "gun" as Jilek calls it. Jilek helped to design this machinery to meet the specifications the RTC required for safe handling of bulk grains and materials. The equipment was manufactured in Mobile. RTC Commodity Transfer, a division of Sonchia Chartering Co. of Colorado, Inc., takes bulk food grade grains from rail cars, or hoppers, and loads them into containers to be shipped around the world. RTC Commodity Transfer is currently the only company offering services of its kind in the Gulf Region. Grains are typically loaded into day cargo vessels for bulk shipment. This method is cost prohibitive for smaller companies who may not deal with such a large volume. With the increases in fuel costs and current demands for larger vessels to supply raw

materials to China and other emerging markets, freight costs for bulk cargoes have increased almost 500 percent. This has also increased the freight costs for smaller cargoes of shippers and buyers who can not afford or do not need the larger shipments, which historically gave less freight cost.

The grain auger, or "gun" shoots grain taken from the rail hopper car into a shipping container. The container will later be placed onto a cargo vessel for shipment overseas. RTC realized that by taking smaller bulk shipments and

All equipment at RTC Commodity Transfer was designed by the company and built in Mobile to meet the client's requirements for safe and damage-free handling of their products. The company became operational in August. Currently RTC Commodity Transfer is loading containers with food grade grains for export, but their equipment can also unload hopper cars directly into ocean containers for all free flowing types of commodities like grains, fertilizers, sands and other materials. RTC can unload about four railroad hopper cars per day,

VULCAN CHRISTENS M/V H.A. SKLENAR
Third Vessel Will Transport Increased Production from Yucatán Quarry Birmingham, Ala. – Vulcan Materials Company (NYSE: VMC) christened the M/V H.A. Sklenar at the Company’s Blakely Island sales yard in the Port of Mobile on October 4. With the addition of the Sklenar, Vulcan owns and operates three Panamax-class self unloading vessels. The Sklenar and its sister vessels, the M/V W.H. Blount and the M/V Bernardo Quintana, transport high quality limestone aggregates from Vulcan’s Sac Tun quarry on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to markets along the U.S. Gulf Coast, the east coast of Florida and the Caribbean. Vulcan acquired and converted the Sklenar to transport an additional volume of aggregates being produced from a major expansion and upgrade of the Company’s processing facility in Mexico. The increased production and transportation capacity will allow Vulcan to meet strong market growth and demand for construction materials along the U.S. Gulf Coast and the east coast of Florida. The plant expansion increased annual production capacity at the quarry from approximately 9 million tons to approximately 12 million tons. The new ship increases annual shipping capacity by over 3 million tons. Additional information on the ship and markets served can be found at www.vulcanmaterials.com/ship.asp. “We are pleased to honor our former Chairman and CEO, Herb Sklenar, by naming our third vessel after him. With our plant expansion completed and the Sklenar in service, Vulcan is able to increase its shipments to attractive markets along the Gulf and South Atlantic coasts,” said Don James, Vulcan’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Over the long term, population growth and market demand in this region are expected to continue to increase at levels above the national averages, while the availability of local, quality aggregates continues to decline. Over time, we expect to continue to increase production and shipping capacity from our Sac Tun quarry so that Vulcan will be positioned to serve expected growth in markets throughout this region.” Vulcan Materials Company, a member of the S&P 500 index, is the nation's foremost producer of construction aggregates and a major producer of other construction materials.
Rella has more than ten years of experience at shipyards on the Gulf Coast, including both Atlantic Marine in Mobile, Ala., and Ingalls in Mississippi. At Ingalls, he started as a Cognizant Engineer for the LHD Main Propulsion Group and advanced quickly to the LHD Program Office as the Main Propulsion Program Coordinator. Later at Ingalls, he represented SURFLANT for the conversion of the USS Inchon, LPH-12. At Atlantic Marine, Rella acted as Project Manager for the construction and delivery of two chemical tankers. Starting his maritime career by enlisting in the U.S. Navy and graduating from the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program, Rella, while in the Navy, received his appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering Systems. He also earned an MBA from Spring Hill College in Mobile. Current construction activity at the Mobile yard includes the second of two 353-foot (107-meter) high-speed cargo/passenger ferries for Hawaii Superferry and a 127-meter Littoral Combat Ship under construction for the U.S. Navy. Austal’s operation in the U.S. currently employs over 1,000 shipyard workers. The yard began operation in 2001 and has successfully produced and delivered nine aluminum vessels, including two fast crew supply vessels, two dinner cruise yachts, two high-speed passenger ferries, two high-speed vehicle/ passenger ferries, and one surface-effect vessel for the Office of Naval Research.
Caytrans BBC LLC Adds Third Vessel Caytrans BBC LLC, the joint venture between BBC Chartering & Logistic of Leer, Germany, and Caytrans Project Services Americas, New Orleans, recently expanded service with the addition of a third vessel, BBC Canada. The BBC Canada is a multipurpose, shallow-draft vessel with a service speed of 15 knots. Built in 1999, the BBC Canada is a 4800 DWT tweendecker with a capacity of 6800 CBM and 2 x 60 ton cranes combinable to 120 mtons. The service, managed by Dan-Gulf Shipping, Inc., is now in its second year and, due to a market demand to offer more sailings per month between the U.S. Gulf, Jamaica, Venezuela, Colombia and other ports in the Caribbean and NCSA, the additional ship will enhance cargo and lifting capacity. The line focuses principally on carrying project cargo, oil and gas equipment, mining equipment, heavy lifts, bulk cargo and IMO. Sales is handled by BBC USA in Houston, who is providing both inside and outside sales in the Texas region, and by Dan-Gulf Shipping from their New Orleans office.

Northern Lights, Southern Style If you want to capture a bit of the holiday spirit this year, a trip up north might do the trick. No, don't book your flight to the North Pole yet. In fact, you won't even have to travel north of the Mason-Dixon Line. Huntsville, in North Alabama, has just what you need to catch some of that yuletide spirit without ever leaving Alabama. Huntsville, while perhaps best known for its history with the U.S. Space program, is also home to the Huntsville Botanical Gardens. The gardens offer 112 beautiful acres of specialty gardens and water features, plus year-round festivals designed to appeal to the whole family. But the most popular
event is the Galaxy of Lights, a mile-and-a-half, drive-through holiday light extravaganza that has garnered national recognition by being named to the Southeastern Tourism Society’s Top Twenty Events five years in a row. A team of dedicated volunteers work year-round on designing, refurbishing and building spectacular animated light displays. Led by Nick Mangus, a core team of 20 volunteers begin planning the next display as soon as last light is put away. "It takes us eight weeks to put it up and four weeks to take it down," said Mangus. “An additional group of 20 help with the set up. We spend January taking it down, and in February start the designs for the next year." The volunteers redesign the display every year, designing and building each new display. The group draws out diagrams of new ideas and if they like it, they will build a scale cardboard model of it, explained Mangus. Then, one of two welders will construct the metal frame. The volunteers will then complete the exhibit by attaching lights, painting and adding the finishing touches. "One of the things that makes us unique is that we do design and build most of our own displays with a keen eye to appearance. We want an elegant, artistic display," Mangus added. Organizers say that the 2007 Galaxy of Lights promises to be bigger and better than ever before. With almost 20 new

scenes and some great improvements in existing ones, this event is once again a not-to-be-missed family attraction. While no one knows how many lights there are, Mangus said that it takes over five miles of extension cords to turn the lights on. Once the sun goes down and the lights go on, the magic begins. Visitors can experience the enchantment of the icicle forest where your vehicle is literally surrounded by hundreds of thousands of twinkling white lights. Children will love the animated nursery rhymes – new for this year, Little Jack Horner enjoys finger food as only he can. In its twelfth year, the Galaxy of Lights tour has something for all members of the family. Along with the popular nursery rhyme scenes, nature is also well represented. Bears fish for jumping salmon, dinosaurs snack on palm trees as pterodactyls scream overhead, and moose slurp from a bubbling stream. Almost every flower that blooms in the Huntsville Botanical Gardens throughout the year is depicted in lights. Enjoy the traditional holiday scenes with skaters, quaint villages, gingerbread, candy canes, and Santa soaring high overhead on a magnificent sleigh as you sit in the warmth of your own car. While there may be no actual snow on the ground, visitors can see snowmen behaving badly in an animated snowball fight, causing one unfortunate snowman to lose his head! And since Huntsville is such a patriotic town,
Huntsville Botanical Garden's Galaxy of Lights is planned and executed by volunteers. Volunteers begin to set up the holiday light tour in mid-September.
The fountain is a popular display on the Galaxy of Lights half-mile driving tour. you won’t be surprised to see the animated red, white and blue ‘fireworks’ display. Huntsville's long relationship with the U.S. Space program also takes on a new life in Christmas lights. The Galaxy of Lights has become a tradition for many residents and visitors alike. In 2006, more than 127,000 visitors from 49 states enjoyed the holiday display. There’s just so much to see that it’s no wonder that the Galaxy of Lights has become the Tennessee Valley’s favorite holiday tradition. In addition to be recognized by the Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 Event, the Galaxy of Lights was included on the American Bus Association’s Top 100 Events, and was named North Alabama Tourism Association’s Event of the Year in 2003. Stroll at your own pace through the winter wonderland of holiday lights and enjoy the sounds of the season, see real-life nursery rhyme characters and of course, the Jolly One himself will be there too. Children can make gifts and warm refreshments will be available. From Thanksgiving through New Year's Day, the tour is drive-through only. Enjoy the holiday tradition from the warmth and comfort of your own vehicle while listening to music transmitted through your radio especially for the Galaxy of Lights. Of Men & Ships
HAPAGS’s Visionary Albert Ballin Of all of the men associated with shipping lines, Samuel Cunard's name is probably the best known, but there was another shipping magnate who arguably did more to advance the passenger liner service than any other individual: Albert Ballin. Ballin was born in 1857, the youngest of seven children. His father was owner of a small Hamburg agency that booked passage for German, Polish and Russian emigrants bound for America. The tiny waterfront agency survived but hardly flourished. Most of the large German shipping lines had their own passenger agents, so the Ballin agency represented other lines, most notably the Philadelphia-based American Line. His father died when Albert Ballin was 17, and the youth had shown little interest in the family business. Rather, his passion was music. An older brother tried his hand at the agency but soon abandoned it to Albert.
Sloman's American Line and the Union Line and was soon giving the Hamburg-Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (HAPAG) or Hamburg-Amerikan Line some serious competition. Recognizing talent, the directors of HAPAG voted to consume the competition rather than fight it, and in 1886, HAPAG bought the Carr Line and hired Albert Ballin as manager of HAPAG's North American passenger department. Ballin was just 28 at the time, but he would soon find himself elected to the Board of Directors. One of Ballin's first orders of business was to persuade HAPAG's directors to order a fleet of twinscrew ships. To the modern reader, such a move seems obvious, but at the time, HAPAG's largest German rival, Norddeutscher Lloyd or North German Lloyd, saw no reason not to continue laying down single screw steamers fitted with auxiliary sail. Under Ballin's direction, HAPAG began constructing the first modern fleet of
The young man took to the business and saw its potential. The year that he assumed control of the agency at the age of 18, some 25,000 emigrants passed through Hamburg on their way to the New World. Within six years that number would swell to 123,000. Clearly, Ballin was at the right place at the right time, but he also had the vision to capitalize on the possibilities. Weary of splitting commissions with his Liverpool counterparts working with the American Line, Ballin approached Edward Carr, owner of the small Carr Line, about getting into the passenger business. Carr agreed and outfitted his freighters AMERICA and AUSTRALIA with berthing spaces to accommodate between 650 and 700 emigrants each. The experiment proved to be a success from the start, and the Carr Line soon added four more modified ships to its fleet of passenger-freighters. In its first year, the line transported some 4,000 passengers. The next year, 11,000 emigrants booked passage on the line. Ballin combined the Carr Line with nov e m b e r 2 0 0 7 • A l a b a m a S e a port

church that catered to steerage-class passengers. In an age when unscrupulous men routinely took advantage of the poorer classes seeking passage to America, HAPAG's Emigrant City provided them with a clean, inexpensive place to stay and eat before boarding their ship. Lighters provided transport to the oceangoing vessels downriver, and the passengers were given a farewell dance before embarking on the ships. Albert Ballin not only provided for emigrants, of course. He also worked to make HAPAG's first-class accommodations second to none. The first two new ships constructed under his direction each included cabins and public areas for 409 first-class passengers, in addition to the accommodations for 580 steerage passengers. Public areas were made beautiful as well as functional.
Under Ballin’s direction, HAPAG laid down modern, twin-screw liners. passenger liners, including the NORMANNIA, FURST BISMARCK, AUGUSTE VICTORIA and the COLUMBIA. The new design meant sharper bows, towering funnels and taller superstructures that offered more room for cabins. Ballin kept a sharp eye on the bottom line, which the directors appreciated, but he also made improvements for the passengers. HAPAG was the first line to provide electric lighting in steerage, and it was also the first line to offer single-berth cabins, an extravagance among the lines catering to emigrants.
While his efforts had been concentrated on building the transatlantic trade, Ballin now sought ways to keep the company's ships occupied during the cold winter months, when the Port of Hamburg was frozen and inaccessible. In 1890, Ballin struck upon the idea of a pleasure cruise in warm waters to bring in additional income in the off-season. HAPAG's Board of Directors scoffed at the idea. Who wanted to go cruising for cruising's sake, they demanded. Ballin insisted and finally prevailed, thus becoming the father of the cruise industry. He advertised a two-month Mediterranean cruise and attracted 241 passengers with the time and money to sail away on a sumptuous adventure. Departing Hamburg on January 22, 1891, the AUGUSTE VICTORIA called at Southampton, Gibraltar, Genoa, Alexandria, Jaffa, Beirut, Constantinople, Athens, Malta, Naples and Lisbon. The cruise was deemed a success, and it was repeated every year thereafter until 1914, adding a New York departure to the schedule in 1893. A Far East winter cruise was added,
Ballin would further look to the comfort and safety of his passengers in later years, purchasing 15 acres adjacent to the Elbe, and building what he called "Emigrant City," a pleasant complex of dormitories, restaurant and canteen, infirmary and

summoning him to a meeting with Kaiser Wilhelm. Ballin met with the Kaiser, the Chancellor and the Kaiser's Aide-de Camp, during which time the Kaiser went over every detail of Morgan’ s proposal. In addition to incorporating HAPAG, the plan called for the rival North German Lloyd line to be brought into the combine. The Kaiser proclaimed himself satisfied with the proposal and the idea that Ballin would now see after the interHAPAG’s Emigrant ests of the North German Lloyd bringing additional revenue to the line. The success HAPAG enjoyed was no accident. Ballin worked tirelessly to improve the line and its services. Whenever he sailed in one of the company's liners, Ballin worked constantly, taking notes on anything and everything. His eye missed no detail; his mindset was that of the passenger – the toast at breakfast should be served in a warm napkin. The butter plates were too small. The bouillon served on deck should be presented in a different cup to avoid spillage, and it should be served with a ham sandwich. The stateroom's desk drawer lock was defective; there was not enough room to accommodate large trunks. The pillows were lumpy and too small. The wine served at dinner was inferior. The cards in the smoking room should bear the imprint of the HAPAG logo. All of these notes went into a memorandum and were sent out as "obligatory" changes to be made, and while subordinates cringed, the changes were implemented and had their desired effect on service. Ballin soon found himself approached by J. P. Morgan, who was working to establish what amounted to a monopoly in the transatlantic trade. Morgan proposed to purchase 51 percent of HAPAG's stock while allowing the company to retain nominal autonomy. During negotiations, Ballin received a telegram, nov e m b e r 2 0 0 7 • A l a b a m a S e a port
Ballin was not one to be satisfied with his achievements. During one of his travels to London he had seen the work of Cesar Ritz and Charles Mewes, the hotelier and architect who were beginning to establish a new standard of grandeur. Ballin was among the first to dine in the splendid Ritz-Carlton Grill in London, and the experience had a profound effect on him. He hit upon the idea of designing a shipboard restaurant separate from the dining room, where passengers could eat at any hour for an additional charge. Ballin retained Mewes to design the interior of HAPAG's newest liner, the AMERIKA, and in 1904, he persuaded the RitzCarlton to operate an a la carte restaurant aboard the ship. Cesar Ritz himself trained the staff, while the maitre d' of the Carlton Grill presided over the restaurant during its first year of operation. The restaurant was the first of its kind in the passenger liner industry, and, once more, set the standard for all others. The AMERIKA featured another novelty that would become standard in passenger ships – the first elevator, which, according to its operator, made 1,825 round trips during the AMERIKA's maiden voyage.

but no less grand. She carried a crew of 1,234 to pamper a maximum of 4,050 passengers. No fewer than 60 chefs and waiters manned the ship's eight kitchens. The Ritz-Carlton Restaurant on board was an exact copy of the New York Ritz. Among the provisions placed on board were 17,500 bottles of wine, champagne and brandy and 28,000 liters of beer.
Kaiser Wilhelm bestowed Albert Ballin with the Order of the Red Eagle for his outstanding contributions to Germany’s shipping industry.
The VATERLAND steamed out of Hamburg on the afternoon of May 14, 1914, arriving in New York seven days later. Despite a near mishap involving a wayward string of barges, the VATERLAND was the great success that Ballin had hoped. She was the grandest ship on the ocean, but her life as a floating hotel was to be short lived. The storm clouds that had been gathering over Europe finally erupted that summer. Ballin saw the war as needless. Indeed, he had tried to channel his country's competitive spirit into a passenger liner race rather than a dreadnought race. After only seven crossings, the VATERLAND was ordered by her owners to remain in port in New York to avoid hostilities. She remained at dock under the care of a skeleton crew until April 1917, when she was seized by American authorities and later converted into the troopship LEVIATHAN.
Ballin set his sights on having the largest and most sumptuous ships in the trade. The IMPERATOR was launched May Ballin, HAPAG's genius who had done so much to pioneer 23, 1912, by Kaiser Wilhelm himself. In a bid to become the the passenger liner service, catering to the comfort and anticilongest passenger ship at sea, a monstrous figurehead was pating the whims of the seagoing passenger, and setting the added to her bow, bringing her to an overall length of 919 standard for the next 100 years, took his own life in November feet – nine feet longer than her closest rival, the Cunard Line's 1918, depressed over the state of the world. o AQUITANIA. After just six voyages, the IMPERATOR was sent back to the yards to lower her center of gravity. In the meanwhile, Ballin was at work upon his I masterpiece, the VATERLAND, at 950 feet long by far the largest passenger ship of her time. The second of his planned trio of superships, the VATERLAND was more stable than the IMPERATOR

– A Look Back – From the Pages of Alabama Seaport The Nation’s Oldest Port Publication 45 Years Ago…
Delegates from the Alabama State Docks, Alcoa Steamship Company and Waterman Steamship Corporation attended the 23rd Chicago World Trade Center Conference to discuss the threats and opportunities to United States commerce in world trade. The Port of Mobile is essentially connected with the Chicago world trade community and is one of the Gulf Gateways for tonnage originating in/destined to the Midwest.
The bark-rigged Coast Guard training cutter EAGLE glided gracefully into the Port of Mobile to help citizens celebrate Mardi Gras in the carnival-frenzied city. Mobile Mayor Mike Dow proclaimed the day as “USCGC Eagle Day,” and Eva Golson, representing Mayor Dow, read a proclamation which, in true Mardi Gras tradition, ordered all ship’s work to cease, all sweepers to stow their brooms and for revelry to dominate.
The Bender dry dock repairs ships at the Alabama State Docks in 1991.
