Wildlife department’s winter bird feeder survey under way

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s 2014 Winter Bird Feeder Survey is set for Jan. 9-12. The Winter Bird Feeder Survey is a fun way for families, school classes and people of all ages to participate in wildlife conservation across the state, a spokesperson said. The department encourages people to provide food such as black oil sunflower seeds, water and shelter for birds wintering in Oklahoma. Survey participants choose two consecutive days between Jan. 9-12 to watch their feeders and record bird activity twice daily on a form provided by the Wildlife Department. ”The Winter Bird Feeder Survey helps biologists monitor a greater portion of the state then they can on their own,” said Melynda Hickman, wildlife diversity biologist for the Department. “The survey is simple and allows for a positive ‘watchable wildlife’ viewing, while also providing resources for the birds.” Each year, the Wildlife Department publishes a guide to feeding winter birds in the November/December calendar issue of “Outdoor Oklahoma” magazine. This issue serves as a “how to” guide for participating in the survey and provides results from the previous year. Order this issue for just $3 ($4 if mailed) by calling the Wildlife Department at (405) 521-3855. A oneyear subscription can purchased for $10 per year. To download a survey form and participate in the 2014 Winter Bird Feeder Survey or to simply learn more about winter birds in Oklahoma, visit okwinterbirds.com. This website also provides an aid to help in identifying birds visiting feeders. For example, the website helps participants distinguish a house finch from a purple finch. For more information contact Melynda Hickman at [email protected] or (405) 990-4977.

Can’t afford student loans Dear Dave, I have a lot of student loan debt, and I can’t afford the payments right now. Should I send them what I can, even if it’s not the minimum payment, or should I not send anything at all? — Tina Dear Tina, They’re not going to stop bothering you no matter which option you choose. The benefit of sending them $5, even if the minimum payment is $50, is that you’re forcing yourself to start living on a budget and do all you can to honor your commitment. That’s the moral, spiritual and legal thing to do in this situation. Lots of times when people say they can’t afford something, what they really mean is they don’t want to give up other stuff in order to honor their obligations. If that’s the case, I’m not going to be on your team. You accepted this responsibility, and if that means you don’t eat out or go on vacation until the debt is paid off, then that’s the way it is. But if you’re already living on a beans-and-rice, scorchedearth budget and $5 is all you can squeeze out, then give them $5 and let them know with a clear conscience it’s all you can afford. All you can do is all you can do. There’s a bright spot in all this though. If you’re scrimping and saving and paying all the money that you have first toward running your household, then secondly toward your creditors, you’ll start finding ways to stretch your dollars even further. Not only will that help you clean up your student loan mess, but it will enable you to have a little bit better life in the process! — Dave *** Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (ROkla.), senior member of the Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, Tuesday introduced Amendment #2605 to the Senate’s unemployment insurance extension bill (S.1845) that would give states the authority to unlock restrictions on developing energy resources on federal lands within their borders. “Under the Obama Administration, our country has experienced one of the slowest economic recoveries in our nation’s history. Those who are filing for unemployment benefits need jobs, and many of them want to work more than they want handouts from the government, but Senate Democrats continue to block common-sense solutions for job creation,” said Inhofe. “Oklahoma has been able to maintain a much lower unemployment rate than the rest of the nation during this time because of our state’s strong energy policies. My amendment to the unemployment insurance extension would help the rest of the nation experience the more stable economy we know so well here in Oklahoma. By empowering states to manage energy exploration and development on federal lands, we could see upwards of 2.5 million additional new jobs across the nation as well as be one step closer to the bipartisan goal of energy independence.” Inhofe first introduced this legislation as a standalone bill, S.1233, on June 26, 2013.
