Self-Confidence by Claude Sweet What is Self-Confidence? Our working definition is the maximizing of the belief in your own ability to succeed. Self-confidence is expressed in both internal and external ways. Confident athletes behave, think, feel, and talk differently than athletes who suffer from low self-confidence. The foundation on which these behaviors, thoughts, feelings, or words is built is the belief that they can be successful. The one characteristic shared by elite athletes is they psychologically are able to maximize and sustain a high level of confidence over time. Confident Athletes share the following Characteristics: Perform the way they want to perform Spend more time thinking about what goals are important Try harder in practice and competition Increase their efforts when they don't reach their goals Use positive mental strategies Control their competition “momentum” Use their emotions in a positive manner Tips for Improving Self-Confidence should be based on reality. When athletes find themselves doubting their ability, encourage them think about their best performance in practice and competition- this is the proof that demonstrates that they do have the ability to perform. Individuals who act confidently are able to focus their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a positive fashion. An athlete who acts confident is more likely to feel confident and be confident. Thinking confidently is a strong indicator that the skater can and will achieve their goals. “By thinking they can win, they become mentally harder to beat”. Confident athletes discard negative thoughts and replace them with the positives. Confident individuals identify a positive image each day. External supporters should encourage the athlete to identify one good or positive thing they do each day. Keep a log of successes to refer to when self doubts occur. Skaters need to set measurable, challenging, yet achievable goals. By setting goals, and achieving them, then setting new goals and achieving them, the athletes prove their ability to be successful to themselves.
