Model of Excellence Recipients Honored On September 19, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) recognized 79 men and women as 2013 Model of Excellence (MOE) award recipients during a ceremony held at Newport News’ Marriott at City Center. The evening event consisted of a reception and dinner followed by an awards presentation.

During the ceremony, NNS President Matt Mulherin congratulated each honoree on their extraordinary contributions to the achievement of NNS’ strategic objectives. “You thought out of the box, you listened to new ideas, and you came up with innovative solutions to difficult challenges. You weren’t afraid to try something new,” Mulherin told the winners.

Each recipient received a framed letter and coin from the shipyard president, the distinguished MOE pyramid and $2,000 which can be used toward the purchase of an MOE ring or other merchandise. NNS Shipbuilders Honor Victims of the Navy Yard Tragedy Following the tragedy that occurred at the Washington Navy Yard Sept. 16, shipbuilder Chad Harris (E82) thought of ways he and his department could show compassion to those affected. “Here at Newport News Shipbuilding, we have many people that work directly with people who were affected by the incident,” said Harris. “Right away I began thinking of ways that our department could provide

positive reinforcement and compassion to the family, friends and colleagues of the victims. I remembered that some NNS shipbuilders wear red on Friday’s as a way to support U.S. troops, so I thought it would be appropriate for us to wear blue – a color that NNS and the Navy have in common.” Harris discussed the idea with his director. “Once I got approval, I sent an

email to friends in other departments,” said Harris. Word of the initiative spread quickly and on Sept. 19 many shipbuilders came to work dressed in blue. “My intention was to create a positive connection on a personal level between NNS and our customer,” said Harris. “I hope we were able to show our support and compassion in such a dark time for so many people.”

O43 Shipbuilders Remain “Accident Free” for 683 Weeks The Welding Services team has been “Accident Free” for the past 683 weeks. The team is comprised of 14 employees responsible for behind-the-scene actions that provide support for numerous production trades. Some of the those tasks include: • Issuing and stocking parts for welding equipment repairs and consumables for the weld metal issue stations. • Delivery of welding equipment and gas cylinders to job sites. • Repair, maintenance and distribution of welding equipment. • Providing stud welding equipment to Waterfront Support Services (X36). “I attribute our team’s success to looking out for one another and intervening when we see someone doing something unsafe,” said Bubba Thomas (O43). Master Shipbuilder Joe Bye (O43) added, “Our team has a set of safety

Master Shipbuilder Joe Bye (O43) points to one of the safety signs the team created and had posted in their shops.

rules that we live by. Those rules include looking out for one another, not taking shortcuts, being aware of our surroundings and always using R.E.C. (recognize, evaluate and control). We have posted these rules in the shop for all to see.” O43 Supervisor Dion Smith couldn’t be happier about his team’s accomplishment. “Six hundred and eighty-three weeks is equivalent to 13 years,” said Smith. “My team and I take great pride in that record. But, more importantly, we take satisfaction in what it represents – none of us were hurt during that time and everyone went home at the end of the day without an injury. I am fortunate to have a very engaged team, particularly when it comes to safety. Safety is engrained in all we do and each member of our team has an unwavering commitment to the injury-free standard our team has set.”

Shipbuilders Attend “Pirates Pack the Park” On Saturday, Sept. 21 many Newport News shipbuilders volunteered and attended the “Pirates Pack the Park” event hosted by the Mariners’ Museum. The museum was trying to break the Guinness World Record for the largest pirate gathering. The museum was hoping for more than 14,000 people to come dressed as pirates so the United States could wrestle the honor from England, the current record holder. An official Guinness World Record representative was in attendance at the event to count the number of pirates. The museum had more than 14,000 event attendees, but only 6,759 were dressed as pirates. The Mariners’ Museum is hoping to host another similar festival next year.

ISO Audits Scheduled for Sept. 23-26 Newport News will undergo a surveillance audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) and a surveillance audit of its Quality Management System (QMS) September 23-26. These surveillance audits will continue as an “integrated” approach in evaluating key areas of these two management systems. This means that personnel involved with discussions with the auditors will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work.

Environmental Management System (EMS) Audit The American Bureau of Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct the surveillance audit of the Newport News Shipbuilding’s Environmental Management System (EMS). Selected parts of the ISO standard 14001 will be audited. Employees may be stopped by auditors and interviewed about general awareness of the company’s environmental policy or how their job could affect the environment. Employees can refer to their green ISO 14001 badge cards or the O27 Environmental, Health and Safety Yardnet website as a reminder of the shipyard’s environmental policy. NNS is looking forward to another successful audit to maintain the shipyard’s ISO 14001 certification for the Environmental Management System. The shipyard was originally awarded in 2003 and was renewed in 2006, 2009 and in 2012. For more information, contact Dwain Jenkins (O27) at 534-4066.

Quality Management System Audit Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) will undergo a surveillance audit of its Quality Management System September 23-26. The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the shipyard, including records for equipment calibration, training, production control, product testing, internal audits, and corrective and preventive actions. Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and non-nuclear work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall awareness of NNS’ quality management policies and the knowledge of the impact their work has. Employees should answer questions about how they normally accomplish their work. During the last surveillance audit, several people and departments were asked about their work processes. Managers, general foremen and supervisors should emphasize to employees the importance of having knowledge of their work procedures and working to authorized procedures and drawings. A successful audit will maintain the shipyard’s ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System. The shipyard was first certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For more information, contact Tony Burger (O04) at 534-3222.
