NIHR CLAHRC for Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Collaborations for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care

CLAHRC CP News Young people produce animated film Eleven young people in care took part in a four day film-making summer school organised by the CLAHRC adolescent theme in collaboration with the Cambridge Film Consortium and other CLAHRC partners. The animated film will form part of a training package for foster carers with the aim of raising awareness of mental health issues. Previous research by the CLAHRC explored mental health needs in the transition from adolescence to adulthood and showed how mental health problems could contribute to placement breakdown for young people in care. Through animation, the young people reflect on their own experience, feelings and attitudes associated with entering care, and express their views about what is important for emotional wellbeing at this difficult time. Animation provided a very powerful way to deal with sensitive issues from a distance. It was also great fun and the young people learned lots of new skills. Their feedback was universally positive: all thought the project had lived up to expectations and one person added ‘yes and more.’ Seeing their ideas come to life gave them a real sense of accomplishment: ‘when all your hard work was done, seeing what you achieved.’ The project team was led by Valerie Dunn, CLAHRC Adolescent Theme Coordinator and included Lizzy Hobbs, animator; Tom Mellor, Restorative Approaches Coordinator, Cambridgeshire Youth Offending Service (who facilitated the sessions); Mary Ogden, Children’s Participation Worker, CCC (who supported the young people throughout the project); James Rogers, film composer; Trish Sheil, Cambridge Film consortium. The film will be launched at the Arts Picturehouse in Cambridge in October 2012.
