Ghost Hunters on the Prowl Have you ever wondered what it was like to hunt for ghosts? Do you have experiences that you can not explain? Voices, noises in the dark, creaks, bumps in the night? We might have an answer for your paranormal questions. On Monday October 14, 2013 @ 7:00pm, we will welcome Graveyard Shift Paranormal Society to the library. They will talk about what they do when they investigate a possible haunting. They will be presenting evidence and taking questions from the audience. Graveyard Shift Paranormal

Socitey is a non-profit organization dedicated to investigating accounts of paranormal activity as a means of helping individuals cope with inexplicable occurrences and contributing to the emerging science of paranormal phenomena here in the Southeast Texas and Southwest Louisiana Area. They approach investigations with an open mind and employ a methodology designed to establish and maintain integrity, primarily using an array of electronic equipment combined with historical research, applied reason and metaphysics. They

do not charge for their services and merely seek an opportunity to fulfill their mission of providing assistance while collecting evidence of paranormal phenomena.

Teen Read Week 2013

Are they Undead? Why do they want brains? What do aliens look like? What is it like to live on other planets? Are there really ghosts who haunt the house and make it creak at night?…. And you can read all about this and hopefully get some answers in books that help you SEEK THE UNKNOWN! This year’s theme for Teen Read Week is “Seek the Unknown.” We will have a display of some excellent scary books in the teen section. We will also come up with a “If you like…” booklist for those teens who want to move on to the adult titles in that genre. We have scheduled some fun activities for the teens that week. So come investigate the more haunting books that hide on

our shelves, enjoy the library and relax with your friends.

from 4:00—5:30 PM in the storytime room. In October, we will have a spook-tacular time getting crafty! During Teen Read Week, we will have 2 Getting Crafty events. The first one will be on Wednesday October 16th in the meeting room. We will be making Marshmallow Guns and then practice shooting them at some Zombies! On Thursday October 17th, we will be making Book Safes so

that you can hide all of your necessary supplies for the Zombie Apocalypse! On Halloween this year we will be making metal Halloween Bookmarks so that you can save your place in your scary books while you go hunting for ghouls, goblins and CANDY!

It was puband memories but for Carrie it was lished in 1974 and the main character has HORROR! She knows she is not like the been rumored to be based on two girls other girls and her mother is really not that King actually taught before he startone to have a good “Mother-Daughter” ed his writing career. The book was not talk with about issues. All she wants is expected to be a hit but it took off with to be normal and the teens and the younger adults. The liked. Is that too much to ask??? I guess “People don't get better, they just get smarter. When you get the “Mean Girls” thought smarter you don't stop pulling the wings of flies, you just think it was too of better reasons for doing it.” much to ask! This classic

book is one of King’s most banned books in high schools. The original movie starred Sissy Spacek and John Travolta and can be check out from the library to watch before you go to the theaters to see the new remake on October 18th. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2013

Don’t worry! Sudoku requires no calculations or arithmetic skills. It is essentially a game of placing numbers in squares, using very simple rules of logic and deduction. It can be played by children and adults and the rules are very simple. The objective of the game is to fill all the blank squares in a game with the correct numbers. There are three very simple constraints to follow.

In a 9 by 9 square Sudoku game: 

Every row of 9 numbers must include all of the digits 1 through 9 in any order.

Every column of 9 numbers must include all of the digits 1 through 9 in any order.

Every 3 by3 subsection of the 9 by 9 square must include all of the digits 1 through 9 in any order.

In summary, the SUDOKU RULE is: Complete the sudoku puzzle so that each and every row, column, and region contains the numbers one through nine only once.

S e p t e m b e r i s l i b r a ry c a r d s i g n u p m o n t h In the month of September, along with the school supplies your children need, don’t forget to pick up the most important back to school supply — a library card. Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies have shown that children who read or are read to at home and

who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning and reading enjoyment. Library cards for Nederland city residents are free and borrowing privileges are given on the spot. Nonresidents who are NISD students are eligible for a card at a re-

duced fee of $10.00 To get a library card for you or your child, you will need a valid Texas Driver’s License and a recent bill that has been mailed to your residence. The addresses on both items must match. It only takes moments for you to sign up for a lifetime of learning for your children and yourself.

O c to b e r i s N at i o n a l B o o k C lu b m o n t h Since October is national book club month, it”s a great time to start up a book club of your own! It is super simple to start; just get some friends together and agree to read and discuss a book. Starting a book club is a great way to have some fun with friends on a weekly or monthly basis. Now what book to pick? If you want to be able to watch a movie based on the book after you have read it, try “The

Help” or maybe “Water for Elephants.” If you want a book that is part of a series to insure that your group will have another book to read next month, “The Hunger Games” or “The Lightning Thief” are young adult books that will keep you thrilled. Why not try Tess Gerrisen’s Rizzoli and Isles series or Karen Kingsbury’s Redemption series if you would rather try an adult series?

Don’t forget to check out the library’s online book clubs. You can’t read the entire book, but it’s a great way to “test drive” a book before recommending it to your group. Just go to www.ned.lib.tx.us and click on the link “Email Book Clubs” to get started. There are several lists of recommendations of books to try for your group, just remember to pick a book that will keep you reading.

International Games Day — November 16th International Games Day @ your library is an initiative of the American Library Association to reconnect communities through their libraries around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games. In the 21st century, libraries are about much more than books. On Saturday, November 16, 2013, two thousand libraries around the world will showcase gaming programs and services in support of IGD13. This year marks the 6th annual event and our library is one of the many libraries participating.

Gaming of all types at the library encourages young patrons to interact with a diverse group of peers, share their expertise with others (including adults), and develop new strategies for gaming and learning. Plus, it's a way for traditionally underserved groups to have fun in the library and interact with other members of the community. Games Day is a great opportunity for families to get out of the house and play together in the one community institution that welcomes everyone.

gaming from 10:30am —12:30pm. During open gaming we will have out all of our board games and video games so that everyone can play. Then at 1:00pm, we will be showing Super Mario Bros, the movie based on the popular video game series. Come and join us to celebrate the 6th year of International Gaming!

On November 16th, we will have open

National Night Out — October 1st This year the City of Nederland will be participating in the National Night Out on October 1, 2013. The National Night Out is designed to heighten awareness crime and drug prevention, generate support in local anti-crime programs, and strengthen neighborhood spirit and policecommunity partnerships. To get the community involved with this, the Nederland Parks and Recreation has partnered with the Police and

Fire Departments to have a family fun evening. Starting at 5:30 pm, there will be ice cream, popcorn and drinks at Tex Ritter Park. They will have programs about safety topics and really cool crafts to make like designing your own flashlight and coloring pages. The fire department will have an open house to allow everyone to tour and see what a firefighter has to do to get ready to fight a fire in town. Police vehicles will be available to be “toured” by children and adults alike.

They will top off the night by watching a movie on the big blow up screen in the park.
