Motheread/Fatheread Colorado increases student success in school through enriched preparation for school entry; helps close the reading ability gap by third grade; and introduces humanities through topics and themes. Parents who participate in the program increase their own reading level as they help their children experience the pleasure of reading. This fun curriculum supports parents in making their homes a literate environment. PTSD, Brad Ayers, Centennial Mental Health: Come learn about the effects of trauma informed care covering the topics of: PTSD, vicarious trauma, risk factors, normal vs clinically significant issues, resilience, and ways to maintain or assist with healthy development. “Once upon a time...”(Going back to the basics of Storytelling) An interactive session of going through the concept and components of Storytelling. Health Consequences of Legalized Marijuana: Effects on Children and Adolescents in Families that Use Marijuana Regularly. Colorado is one of four states in the U.S. that has decriminalized the use of marijuana. In this session we will explore the following: 1) the current laws regarding the use of marijuana in Colorado, and 2) the health consequences on infants, children, and young adults because of their exposure to marijuana in the home. Along the way, we will answer the question: will the legalization of marijuana and its increased availability to parents undermine preventative health strategies of children and adolescents? “What is ‘Toxic Stress’ and what can we do about it?” Description: When a strong stress response occurs continually, or is triggered by multiple sources, it can have a cumulative toll on an individual’s physical and mental health—for a lifetime. The more adverse experiences a person has in childhood, the greater the likelihood of developmental delays in childhood and later health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, substance abuse, and depression. Research shows that supportive, responsive relationships with caring adults as early in life as possible can prevent or even reverse the damaging effects of toxic stress response. Come learn more about the research on toxic stress, what others are doing about it and how we can all help each other be healthier.”
