Setting Up Your ELGG.net Account Several sections of Composition 101 require completion of an e-portfolio using the ELGG.net website. This site allows students to create portfolios of their work demonstrating their execution of the Composition 101 course competencies. Follow these instructions to set up you online ELGG.net e-portfolio. For additional assistance, ask your instructor, or contact the portfolio support staff during lab hours. They can give you one-on-one instruction and support. Lab hours, starting October 25th, 2006 Monday: 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM Wednesday: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM Thursday: 1:30 – 3:30 PM

Note: The ELGG.net site is still in a basic version. When signing up for your account, only click on items once, and give the site plenty of time to load. It can take longer than some websites, and clicking things multiple times will cause lots of unnecessary problems. Refreshing screens or hitting back on your browser may also cause problems. Tell your instructor or facilitator if you have trouble.

To create an ELGG.net account 1. Visit http://www.elgg.net. 2. Click Sign up in the upper right hand corner (see Figure 1).

Fig. 1 3. Fill in your name and email address, and click on Register. This will send an email to the email address you entered (see Figure 2). ELGG.net Setup Instructions

Click on the link or copy and paste it to the address bar of your Internet browser. The link will take you to a confirmation page (see Figure 3).

Fig. 3 6. Fill in your name and username on the confirmation page. The ELGG.net support team suggests making your username the same as your D2L login and your password the same as your D2L login and password (see Figure 3). 7. Check the box that verifies you are 13 years of age or older. 8. Click on Join at the bottom of the page. Now you are done setting up your account.

Composition course competencies Your online portfolio should contain documents demonstrating your execution of the ENG 101 competencies. To store these documents, you must create a folder for each of the six course competencies. The competencies are as follows: (a) demonstrate and practice strategies for idea generation, audience analysis, organization of texts, drafting, evaluation of drafts, revision, and editing. (b) write papers of varying lengths that demonstrate effective explanation, analysis, and argumentation; (c) become experienced in computer-assisted writing and research; (d) locate and evaluate material, using PALS, the Internet, and other sources; (e) analyze and synthesize source material, making appropriate use of paraphrase, summary, quotation, and citation conventions; (f) employ syntax and usage appropriate to academic writing and the professional world.

To set-up up folders 1. Click on the Your Files tab at the top of your ELGG.net homepage. 2. Click on Add a file or a folder. This will open the Upload files and folders screen (see Figure 4).

Fig. 4 3. Title your folder Competency A. 4. Click Create. This will take you to the Your Files main screen. A new folder labeled Competency A should now appear. 5. Follow steps 2 through 4 to create a folder for all competencies, A-F. Your folders should end up looking similar to Figure 5. ELGG.net Setup Instructions

Fig. 7 7. Type a title for the file in the File title box. 8. Type a brief description of which course competency this file demonstrates (see the course competencies on page 1 of this document) in the File Description box. 9. Click Upload. Note: When uploading files, make sure to select logged-in users as your security preference for all items. If you select “private,” then only you can view them, and if you select “public,” then anyone on the Internet can look at them. These instructions should help you set up your e-portfolio. If you struggle, ask your instructor or drop by the open lab hours listed on page 1. An ELGG.net facilitator will help you figure it out! If you want an example of a sample ELGG.net e-portfolio that demonstrates what your portfolio should contain, visit www.elgg.net/generic. This site mocks a student e-portfolio, including folders containing the appropriate types of documents.
